Voice Disorders in Islamic Religious Officials: Is It Any Different Than Those of the Teachers, Another Well-Known Professional Voice Users?

OBJECTIVES: This study explores Islamic religious officials' voice use, disorders, and treatment methods by comparing the officials with teachers, the largest group of voice professionals. STUDY DESIGN: This is a nonrandomized retrospective study. METHODS: This study included 85 patients with voice disorder complaints; 42 were religious officials and 43 were teachers. We compared the two groups of patients in terms of demographic information, job descriptions, years in their professions, smoking histories, alcohol consumption, allergies and other systemic disorders, average weekly vocal load

Perspectives on voice treatment for unilateral vocal fold paralysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is a common cause of neurogenic dysphonia resulting in glottal insufficiency. To restore glottal sufficiency and reduce the presenting dysphonia, treatment involving either surgical intervention, voice therapy or a combination of the two is typically provided. Currently, there is no consensus for the most effective voice treatment for UVFP. This results in an inability to compare current studies, and a lack of treatment effectiveness for the management of UVFP. This study aims to review the most recent literature for the management of d

[A case study on therapy for functional voice disorder of glottal dysraphism patient].

OBJECTIVE: To testify the effect of voice therapy methods for the glottal dysraphism patient with functional voice disorder. METHOD: The subject was a 62 year old man, who had been diagnosed as functional voice disorder of glottal dysraphism. The main therapy was voice training, with normalized noise energy (NNE) as the assessment and monitoring parameter of the voice function. The datum of the baseline period and the treatment period were collected, and were analyzed with A-B Single-Subject Design in statistics. RESULT: NNE had been significantly decreased (P < 0.01) through the systematica

Vibrato rate adjustment.

The goal of the present study was to document the acoustic changes that occur as singers attempt to increase or decrease their vibrato rate to match target stimuli. Eight advanced singing students produced vowels with vibrato in three registers, both naturally and while attempting to match faster or slower rate stimuli. Slower rates were associated with lower intensity and less steady vibrato. Faster rates involved increased vibrato extent in the chest register and increased intensity in the head register. Singers whose spontaneous vibrato rates were naturally either slower or faster tended to

Efficacy of a behaviorally based voice therapy protocol for vocal nodules.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects on vocal function of voice therapy for vocal nodules. Perceptual and physiological progressive changes were examined during a strictly structured, behaviorally based voice therapy protocol in which 11 women with vocal nodules participated. Randomized audio recordings from pretherapy and from each of the therapy approaches (vocal hygiene, respiration, direct facilitation, carryover) were used for perceptual evaluations. Six speech-language pathologists rated ten voice quality parameters. Two evaluation procedures were performed and compared. Inter…

Helping people to keep their voices healthy and to communicate effectively.

Voice is essential for all spoken languages. The mechanism of voice is taken for granted and its potential in human communication is overlooked. The combined expertise of specialist speech and language therapists and voice teachers in the Voice Care Network is focused on disseminating knowledge about care, development and effective use of the speaking voice. They cooperate, exchange ideas and develop practical voice workshops to prevent vocal problems and to support teachers, lecturers and others who depend on voice. A countrywide network of tutors runs workshops in universities and schools. F

Laryngeal webs: a new treatment for an old problem.

Laryngeal webs, both congenital and acquired, present a difficult therapeutic challenge for the laryngologist. A young trial attorney with an iatrogenic laryngeal web secondary to laser excision of anterior cordal papillomata presented with the double therapeutic challenge: on the one hand, he had recurrent papillomata and, on the other hand, he had a significant anterior web that was 7 mm long and extended to within 3 mm of the tips of the vocal processes and involved the full thickness of the vocal folds. A new/old treatment was tried in this patient and subsequently used on another patient

Human speech development for an implantable artificial larynx.

An electromagnetic artificial larynx was implanted in two volunteer laryngectomees. Both patients were able to communicate well, but the voice quality still needed improving. Therefore, in this investigation, listener judgments were obtained of 22 different sound sources with a view to incorporating the preferred speech sound in a new version of the device. Electroglottograms were used as sound sources in a speech synthesizer and sentences were produced with different voice qualities for judgmental tests. The results of the listening tests showed a distinct preference for waveforms correspondi…

[Treatment of vocal symptoms in Parkinson's disease: the Lee Silverman method].

Mild changes in voice quality and articulation of speech may be seen in early phases of Parkinson's disease (PD). Voice and speech disturbances in PD constitute a hypocinetic dysarthria or dysarthrophonia and are characterized by monotony and reduced intensity of voice, imprecise articulation and disturbances of rhythm. Favorable results with an intensive method (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) for the treatment of voice disturbances in PD were recently reported. The main goal of the method is to augment vocal intensity through the increment of phonatory effort. The purpose of the present study…

The dysphonia severity index: an objective measure of vocal quality based on a multiparameter approach.

The vocal quality of a patient is modeled by means of a Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI), which is designed to establish an objective and quantitative correlate of the perceived vocal quality. The DSI is based on the weighted combination of the following selected set of voice measurements: highest frequency (F(0)-High in Hz), lowest intensity (I-Low in dB), maximum phonation time (MPT in s), and jitter (%). The DSI is derived from a multivariate analysis of 387 subjects with the goal of describing, purely based on objective measures, the perceived voice quality. It is constructed as DSI = 0.13 x…

Voice therapy for laryngeal hemiplegia: the role of timing of initiation of therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal hemiplegia, also known as vocal fold paralysis, causes severe communicative disability. Although voice therapy is commonly considered to be beneficial for improving the voice quality in several voice disorders, there are only a few papers that present scientific evidence of the effectiveness of voice therapy in treating the disabilities of laryngeal hemiplegia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of voice therapy in patients with laryngeal hemiplegia and to evaluate the role of the time gap between onset of laryngeal hemiplegia and initiation of therapy. Voice outcome following thyroplasty in patients with cancer-related vocal fold paralysis.

Medialization laryngoplasty restores voice in patients with unilateral laryngeal paralysis. Of question was whether patients with vocal fold paralysis resulting from cancer or its treatment had as good a post-operative voice result as patients with vocal fold paralysis of benign etiology. The purpose of the present study was to compare post-operative perceptual, acoustic, aerodynamic, and quality of life data in these two patient groups. Twenty-eight patients with vocal fold paralysis secondary to malignancy or its treatment were age and gender-matched with patients with paralysis resulting fr

Art and science: impact of semioccluded vocal tract exercises and choral singing on quality of life in subjects with congenital GH deficiency.

OBJECTIVE: Currently, not much is known about the interactions between voice and growth hormone (GH). We have described large kindred with isolated GH deficiency (IGHD) due to a GHRH receptor mutation, resulting in severe short stature and high-pitched voice. These IGHD individuals have little interest in GH treatment, as they consider themselves "short long-lived people", rather than patients. Interestingly, they report normal general quality of life, but they rate their Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) as low. Here, we assessed the social and auditory-perceptual impacts of artistic-int

Presbylaryngis: a state-of-the-art review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Presbylaryngis is the term used to describe changes in the larynx with ageing. It represents an increasingly common complaint as global populations continue to grow and get older. Presbylaryngis has a significantly negative impact on patients' quality of life and their ability to participate in society. This article will review the relevant literature on the incidence, pathophysiology, clinical evaluation, and treatment modalities for presbylaryngis. RECENT FINDINGS: The recently developed Ageing Voice Index (AVI) constitutes the first validated instrument for voice complai

A Scoping Review on the Intersection Between Voice and Swallowing Measures in Healthy and Disordered Populations.

PURPOSE: Voice and swallowing are distinct functions that share anatomical and physiological properties; however, research investigating their intersection is limited. The purpose of this scoping review was to explore the literature surrounding the relationship between voice and swallowing measures in healthy adults and those with non-degenerative disorders. Specifically, we aimed to elucidate whether objective voice measures could be used as correlates of swallowing function. METHOD: We systematically searched four databases (Embase, PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science) for relevant literatur
