Evidence for a link among cognition, language and emotion in cerebellar malformations.

We compared the neurobehavioral profiles of children with Joubert syndrome (JS participants), a rare autosomal recessive condition characterized on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis and midbrain-hindbrain malformations, and children with malformations confined to the cerebellar vermis and one or both hemispheres (Cerebellar malformations--CM participants). We aimed at investigating the influence of anatomo-clinical similarities (vermian malformation) and differences (intact cerebellar hemispheres vs sparing of the pons, respectively) with respect to cognit

Investigation of potential cognitive tests for use with older adults in audiology clinics.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive declines in working memory and processing speed are hallmarks of aging. Deficits in speech understanding also are seen in aging individuals. A clinical test to determine whether the cognitive aging changes contribute to aging speech understanding difficulties would be helpful for determining rehabilitation strategies in audiology clinics. PURPOSE: To identify a clinical neurocognitive test or battery of tests that could be used in audiology clinics to help explain deficits in speech recognition in some older listeners. RESEARCH DESIGN: A correlational study examining th

Halstead Category Test sensitivity to neurocognitive deficits in prenatal alcohol exposed and cognitively impaired children.

Objective: The Halstead Category Test (HCT) has been demonstrated to be sensitive to executive dysfunction in adults and children. Children with a history of significant prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) typically show deficits in executive functions in such areas as abstract reasoning, concept formation abilities, and cognitive flexibility. However, earlier research has not taken into account the demographic variables of age, sex, and ethnicity. Methods: Three groups of psychiatrically hospitalized children ages 9-17 years were included: Children with a history of PAE (n = 295); children with co

A controlled, prospective study of neuropsychological outcomes post parathyroidectomy in primary hyperparathyroid patients.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing number of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) patients with neuropsychological or psychiatric symptoms. Many of these patients do not have osseous or renal complications to satisfy the criteria for parathyroidectomy according to the NIH guidelines. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether there is any improvement in neuropsychological and mood symptoms following parathyroidectomy. PATIENTS AND DESIGN: Twenty PHPT patients undergoing parathyroidectomy and 20 orthopaedic controls matched for age, gender and estimated intelligence were subjects to pre and postoperative ass

Brief Audiovisual Feedback Training Yields Long-Lasting Gains in Multisensory Integration and Speech Comprehension: Contributions of Different Cognitive Abilities.

The ability to integrate information from different sensory modalities, such as vision and hearing, enables us to perceive and understand complex stimuli. The relevance of this ability can be seen in speech perception, for example, which requires the integration of auditory (e.g., voice) and visual (e.g., lip movements) information. Recent studies have shown that the accuracy of this integration process, and thus speech comprehension, can be improved by brief audiovisual feedback training. However, the long-term stability as well as associated cognitive mechanisms are not yet fully understood.

Sex Differences in Intelligence on the WISC: A Meta-Analysis on Children with Specific Learning Disabilities.

Several studies have examined performance on the Wechsler batteries in typically developing children and adolescents. In particular, some studies suggest that cognitive functioning may differ between males and females. In this framework, the present study aims to investigate, through a meta-analytical approach, whether there are sex differences in the profiles emerging from the WISC battery in children with a Specific Learning Disability. For this purpose, a systematic search was conducted, resulting in a final selection of 12 published studies which utilized the WISC and included at least one

Exploratory investigation on antibodies to GluN1 and cognitive dysfunction in patients with chronic autoimmune psychosis.

INTRODUCTION: Mild cognitive dysfunction has been implicated in a number of psychiatric diseases and affects social functioning. Although clinical criteria were recently proposed for autoimmune psychosis (AP), biomarkers have not yet been established for the severity and prognosis of cognitive dysfunction. We herein investigated the relationships between 3 types of serum antibodies and cognitive dysfunction in chronic psychiatric patients suspected of AP. METHODS: We included 31 patients suspected of AP and obtained information on their clinical characteristics. Three types of autoantibodies

Assessment of Cortical Auditory Function Using Electrophysiological and Neuropsychological Measurements in Children with Bone-Anchored Hearing Aids.

Children suffering from conductive or mixed hearing loss may benefit from a bone-anchored hearing aid system (BAHA Attract implantable prosthesis). After audiological rehabilitation, different aspects of development are improving. The objective of this case report is to propose a comprehensive framework for monitoring cortical auditory function after implantation of a bone-anchored hearing aid system by using electrophysiological and neuropsychological measurements. We present the case of a seven-year-old boy with a congenital hearing loss due to a plurimalformative syndrome, including outer a

Hormonal replacement therapy and its potential influence on working memory and competency/adaptive functioning in 47,XXY (Klinefelter syndrome).

This cross-sectional, retrospective analysis investigated the possible effect of hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) on working memory (WM) and competency/adaptive functioning (CAF) in boys with 47,XXY; the effect of timing of 47,XXY diagnosis on these variables; and the relationship between WM and CAF, if any. A total of 111 boys with 47,XXY, ranging from 6 to 16 years of age (M = 9 years 4 months; SD = 2 years 1 month), were evaluated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, and Child Behavior Checklist. Participants were grouped by HRT status and timing of diagnosis. Analysis of v

Relationship between working memory and comprehension and expression of grammar in Farsi-speaking children with cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVES: Grammar is one of the most fundamental components of language and working memory (WM) is one of the most important cognitive features. These two skills play a vital role in learning, literacy and communication. Children with cochlear implants (CIs) experience delays in both of these skills. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between these two skills in children with CIs. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 20 Farsi-speaking children with CIs. WM was estimated by forward and backward auditory digit spans (FBS and BDS) from the Persian (Farsi) versio

Higher testosterone level is associated with improved cognitive functions in Klinefelter syndrome.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a common sex chromosome aneuploidy affecting one to two per 1000 live male births. Testosterone therapy and neuropsychological support can enhance the quality of life in affected individuals. While cognitive deficits have been documented in Klinefelter syndrome, the influence of hormonal variability on cognitive profiles remains underexplored. This study aimed to determine whether testosterone levels correlate with neurocognitive functions in Klinefelter syndrome individuals. This cross-sectional study involved a heterogeneous clinical sample from a single tertiary
