BACKGROUND: Behavioral surgery (BS) is resurging because of unmet clinical need, advances in basic sciences, neuroimaging, neurostimulation, and stereotaxy. However, there is a danger that BS will fall unless acceptable strategies are adopted by BS providers.
METHODS: A critical review of conditions leading to rise of psychosurgery (PS) and concerns resulting in its fall was conducted to learn lessons and safeguard BS of the future.
RESULTS: PS rose and spread in 1960 like wildfire without adequate preclinical and clinical studies. Hundreds of patients had PS without adequate preoperative di

The purpose of this case study is to examine the physiological/behavioral factors leading up to heat exhaustion in a male wildland firefighter during wildland fire suppression. The participant (24 years old, 173 cm, 70 kg, and 3 years firefighting experience) experienced heat exhaustion following 7 hours of high ambient temperatures and arduous work on the fire line during the month of August. At the time of the heat-related incident (HRI), core temperature was 40.1 °C (104.2 °F) and skin temperature was 34.4 °C (93.9 °F). His work output averaged 1067 counts·min(-1) (arbitrary units for measu

We compared the effects of natural and anthropogenic watershed disturbances on methyl mercury (MeHg) concentration in bulk zooplankton from boreal Shield lakes. MeHg in zooplankton was monitored for three years in nine lakes impacted by deforestation, in nine lakes impacted by wildfire, and in twenty lakes with undisturbed catchments. Lakes were sampled during spring, mid- and late summer. MeHg in zooplankton showed a seasonal trend: concentrations were the lowest in spring, then peaked in mid-summer and decreased in late summer. Over the three study years, MeHg concentrations observed in mid-

BACKGROUND: Landscape fire-sourced (LFS) air pollution is an increasing public health concern in the context of climate change. However, little is known about the attributable global, regional, and national mortality burden related to LFS air pollution.
METHODS: We calculated country-specific population-weighted average daily and annual LFS fine particulate matter (PM2·5) and surface ozone (O3) during 2000-19 from a validated dataset. We obtained the relative risks (RRs) for both short-term and long-term impact of LFS PM2·5 and O3 on all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality. The s

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a rapidly growing global health challenge, with prevalence projected to reach 13-14 million cases by 2040. While aging and improved diagnostic awareness partly explain this trend, mounting evidence implicates environmental factors as critical contributors. This review synthesizes current literature on exposures such as pesticides, solvents, heavy metals, air pollutants, and infectious agents, emphasizing their mechanistic links to neurodegeneration. These factors interact with genetic susceptibility and aging, supporting the "multiple-hit" hypothesis, which posits t

BACKGROUND: Ralstonia solanacearum poses a severe threat to global agriculture due to its broad host range, high dispersal capacity, and limited chemical control options. Plant immune inducers provide an effective strategy for controlling bacterial wilt disease.
RESULTS: This study demonstrated a natural-derived compound esculetin (ES) serves as a novel plant immune inducer against tobacco bacterial wilt. Foliar application of ES exhibits considerable control effect on tobacco bacterial wilt, with control efficacy is high as 45.41%-68.69%, significantly higher than positive control treatment-

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Climate change is emerging as a clinically relevant driver of cardiometabolic risk, particularly among individuals with diabetes. Increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events, including heat waves, cold exposure, and air pollution, can disrupt physiological homeostasis and access to essential healthcare resources. People with diabetes are uniquely vulnerable due to impaired thermoregulation, increased risk of dehydration, and high prevalence of cardiovascular and kidney disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: Temperature extremes impose significant cardiovascular stress. H

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the biological characteristics of the lens and explore the factors influencing the postoperative position of intraocular lens (IOL) using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) in cataract patients with long axial length (AL).
METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 110 cataract patients who underwent uneventful cataract surgeries. The preoperative and postoperative biometric parameters were obtained using IOLMaster 700. The average lens density (ALD) was analyzed using Fiji ImageJ. The biological characteristics of cataracts were analyz

Our results indicate that overexpression of OsSPL1 in transgenic tobacco plants attenuated disease resistance and facilitated programmed cell death. Long-chain base phosphates including sphingosine-1-phosphate have been shown to act as signaling mediators in regulating programmed cell death (PCD) and stress responses in mammals. In the present study, we characterized a rice gene OsSPL1, encoding a putative sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase that is involved in metabolism of sphingosine-1-phosphate. Expression of OsSPL1 was down-regulated in rice plants after treatments with salicylic acid, benzothi

Wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe, with Mediterranean regions emerging as global hotspots of megafire activity whose impacts extend from upland catchments to coastal waters. Although the terrestrial effects of fire are well established, the mechanisms by which materials mobilised from burned catchments influence marine ecosystems remain poorly resolved. We investigate whether and how a Mediterranean megafire (~12,000 ha) was followed by changes in nutrient concentrations and coastal water column conditions and whether these changes were associated with short-term ecosystem respon…

Opportunistic bacterial pathogens frequently associated with human clinical infections, including antimicrobial-resistant strains, are infiltrating the microbiomes of wild animals, where they have the potential to negatively impact wildlife health. Bacterial genes conferring resistance to amoxicillin have previously been reported in koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) faecal DNA. Koalas are facing several key threats, including wildfires, and affected individuals may receive amoxicillin therapy to treat burn wounds. This study aimed to identify the species of amoxicillin-resistant bacteria in koala…

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are pervasive environmental pollutants with significant impacts on ecosystems and public health. This study aimed to characterize PFAS concentrations in an environmental justice community impacted by active/legacy copper mining, compounded by wildfires and flash floods. Additionally, the study explored the (re)mobilization of PFAS and co-occurrence with metal(loid)s following these events. Twenty-eight PFAS compounds in 35 residential and 8 control surface soil samples were analyzed via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS). The max…

Climate change threatens human health, but there remains a lack of evidence on the economic toll of climate-sensitive public health impacts. We characterize human mortality and morbidity costs associated with 10 climate-sensitive case study events spanning 11 US states in 2012: wildfires in Colorado and Washington, ozone air pollution in Nevada, extreme heat in Wisconsin, infectious disease outbreaks of tick-borne Lyme disease in Michigan and mosquito-borne West Nile virus in Texas, extreme weather in Ohio, impacts of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey and New York, allergenic oak pollen in North C…

BACKGROUND: Firefighters responding to wildland and wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires increasingly navigate a hazardous landscape of environmental pollutants and occupational risks that may influence their health risk perceptions, yet their firsthand experiences and work-related safety concerns are insufficiently understood.
METHODS: Between December 2024 and February 2025, we conducted seven focus groups and four key informant interviews with 51 Florida Forest Service personnel, whose service averaged 11.5 years. Qualitative analysis of interview data employed a coding reliability themati
