MXene-chitosan photo-responsive conduit for wireless optogenetic stimulation to enhance neural regeneration and functional recovery after optic nerve injury.

Optic nerve injury triggers progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and axonal loss, driven by inhibitory microenvironmental factors such as glial scarring, myelin debris, and growth-inhibitory signaling. Physical stimuli such as photothermal and photoelectric stimulations have gained attention, yet little is known about their potential on normal cells or the optic nerve due to setbacks from over-exposure. Photothermal stimulus presents photoelectric cues and, at the same time, energy conversion for heat generation. Herein, a bio-functional platform was designed by incorporat

An exoskeleton controlled by an epidural wireless brain-machine interface in a tetraplegic patient: a proof-of-concept demonstration.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 20% of traumatic cervical spinal cord injuries result in tetraplegia. Neuroprosthetics are being developed to manage this condition and thus improve the lives of patients. We aimed to test the feasibility of a semi-invasive technique that uses brain signals to drive an exoskeleton. METHODS: We recruited two participants at Clinatec research centre, associated with Grenoble University Hospital, Grenoble, France, into our ongoing clinical trial. Inclusion criteria were age 18-45 years, stability of neurological deficits, a need for additional mobility expressed by the

The use of SmartPill for gastric monitoring.

Testing to define delayed gastric emptying is required to diagnose gastroparesis; rapid emptying is found in other patients. Commonly performed methods of gastric emptying testing include scintigraphy and breath testing. The SmartPill wireless motility capsule (WMC) system is US FDA-approved for evaluating suspected delayed emptying in gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia. The device measures transit in the stomach, small intestine, and colon by detecting characteristic pH transitions; and quantifies pressure waves in each gut region. WMC gastric emptying times correlate with scintigraphic m

Residual volume fraction during walking using wireless air plethysmography in patients with chronic deep venous disease.

OBJECTIVE: Traditional air plethysmography (APG) provides a quantitative measure of the residual volume fraction (RVF) after 10 tiptoe movements. The recent development of a wireless Bluetooth (Bluetooth SIG, Inc, Kirkland, Wash) APG device, the PicoFlow (Microlab Elettronica, Padua, Italy), enabled us to measure RVF during normal walking. The aim of our study was to compare the RVF obtained during tiptoeing with RVF obtained during normal walking in patients with deep venous pathology (ie, reflux and/or obstruction). METHODS: A total of 61 consecutive symptomatic patients (27 women and 34 me

Prosthesis Control with an Implantable Multichannel Wireless Electromyography System for High-Level Amputees: A Large-Animal Study.

BACKGROUND: Myoelectric prostheses lack a strong human-machine interface, leading to high abandonment rates in upper limb amputees. Implantable wireless electromyography systems improve control by recording signals directly from muscle, compared with surface electromyography. These devices do not exist for high amputation levels. In this article, the authors present an implantable wireless electromyography system for these scenarios tested in Merino sheep for 4 months. METHODS: In a pilot trial, the electrodes were implanted in the hind limbs of 24 Sprague-Dawley rats. After 8 or 12 weeks, im

Active books: the design of an implantable stimulator that minimizes cable count using integrated circuits very close to electrodes.

This paper presents an integrated stimulator that can be embedded in implantable electrode books for interfacing with nerve roots at the cauda equina. The Active Book overcomes the limitation of conventional nerve root stimulators which can only support a small number of stimulating electrodes due to cable count restriction through the dura. Instead, a distributed stimulation system with many tripole electrodes can be configured using several Active Books which are addressed sequentially. The stimulator was fabricated in a 0.6-μm high-voltage CMOS process and occupies a silicon area of 4.2 × 6

Review on Advances in Pediatric Endoscopy in the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Over the past decades, an increased importance has been given to gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy in the management of children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), considering that mucosal healing has been recognized as the optimal endpoint in the treat-to-target paradigm. The recent advances in technology and anesthesia have facilitated the comprehensive evaluation of the GI tract. In this review, we will discuss the role of ileocolonoscopy, upper GI endoscopy, and device-assisted enteroscopy in the work-up and management of pediatric Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis, with parti

Motion artifact-controlled micro-brain sensors between hair follicles for persistent augmented reality brain-computer interfaces.

Modern brain-computer interfaces (BCI), utilizing electroencephalograms for bidirectional human-machine communication, face significant limitations from movement-vulnerable rigid sensors, inconsistent skin-electrode impedance, and bulky electronics, diminishing the system's continuous use and portability. Here, we introduce motion artifact-controlled micro-brain sensors between hair strands, enabling ultralow impedance density on skin contact for long-term usable, persistent BCI with augmented reality (AR). An array of low-profile microstructured electrodes with a highly conductive polymer is

A Wearable Multi-Modal Digital Upper Limb Assessment System for Automatic Musculoskeletal Risk Evaluation.

Continuous ergonomic risk assessment of the human body is critical to avoid various musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) for people involved in physical jobs. This paper presents a digital upper limb assessment (DULA) system that automatically performs rapid upper limb assessment (RULA) in real-time for the timely intervention and prevention of MSDs. While existing approaches require human resources for computing the RULA score, which is highly subjective and untimely, the proposed DULA achieves automatic and objective assessment of musculoskeletal risks using a wireless sensor band embedded with

Materials and Device Designs for Wireless Monitoring of Temperature and Thermal Transport Properties of Wound Beds during Healing.

Chronic wounds represent a major health risk for diabetic patients. Regeneration of such wounds requires regular medical treatments over periods that can extend for several months or more. Schemes for monitoring the healing process can provide important feedback to the patient and caregiver. Although qualitative indicators such as malodor or fever can provide some indirect information, quantitative measurements of the wound bed have the potential to yield important insights. The work presented here introduces materials and engineering designs for a wireless system that captures spatio-temporal

A 6.78-MHz distance-insensitive wireless power transfer system with a dual-coupled L-type matching network.

A 6.78-MHz wireless power transfer (WPT) system can achieve a long transmission distance, which is based on magnetically coupled resonant technology. Due to its high quality factor coils, the system performance is greatly affected by position displacement. In this paper, a weakly coupled and distance-insensitive WPT system with a dual-coupled L-type matching network was proposed. To improve displacement tolerance, the proposed system used a dual mutual inductance matching network, which did not require feedback to change capacitance or inductance dynamically. To remain lightweight, printed mul

Facial Pain Update: Advances in Neurostimulation for the Treatment of Facial Pain.

Craniofacial pain, including trigeminal neuralgia, trigeminal neuropathic pain, and persistent idiopathic facial pain, is difficult to treat and can have severe implications for suffering in patients afflicted with these conditions. In recent years, clinicians have moved beyond treating solely with pharmacological therapies, which are generally not very effective, and focused on new interventional pain procedures. These procedures have evolved as technology has advanced, and thus far, early results have demonstrated efficacy in small patient cohorts with a variety of craniofacial pain states.

Automated Management of Exercise Intervention at the Point of Care: Application of a Web-Based Leg Training System.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in information and communication technology have prompted development of Web-based health tools to promote physical activity, the key component of cardiac rehabilitation and chronic disease management. Mobile apps can facilitate behavioral changes and help in exercise monitoring, although actual training usually takes place away from the point of care in specialized gyms or outdoors. Daily participation in conventional physical activities is expensive, time consuming, and mostly relies on self-management abilities of patients who are typically aged, overweight, and

A cloud-based mobile system to improve respiratory therapy services at home.

Chronic respiratory diseases are one of the most prevalent health problems in the world. Treatment for these kind of afflictions often take place at home, where the continuous care of a medical specialist is frequently beyond the economical means of the patient, therefore having to rely on informal caregivers (family, friends, etc.). Unfortunately, these treatments require a deep involvement on their part, which results in a heavy burden on the caregivers' routine and usually end up deteriorating their quality of life. In recent years, mHealth and eHealth applications have gained a wide intere
