Changes in respiratory function after one and three hours of exposure to formaldehyde in non-smoking subjects.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the changes in respiratory function within one hour and three hours of exposure to formaldehyde and investigate the relation between exposure to formaldehyde and acute changes in respiratory function. METHOD: Respiratory function of 50 non-smoking medical students exposed to formaldehyde in a gross anatomy laboratory were compared with respiratory function of 36 non-exposed, non-smoking physiotherapy students. Formaldehyde concentrations were measured in the breathing zone of each exposed subject and in the general work environment. RESULTS: Formaldehyde concentration

Correction of Paradoxical Ribcage Motion in Scoliosis by Noninvasive Ventilation.

STUDY DESIGN: Observational study of ribcage motion in scoliosis. OBJECTIVE: To see whether noninvasive ventilation corrected paradoxical i … n is improved or abolished by noninvasive ventilation. Since noninvasive ventilation takes over the work of breathing from the respiratory muscles, we suggest that inspiratory muscle contraction causes distortion of part of the ribcage in scoliosis, probably because of the abnormal orientation of diaphragmatic muscle fibers. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 2.

Functional analysis of the human rib cage over the vital capacity range in standing position using biplanar X-ray imaging.

Pathologies of the respiratory system can by accompanied by alterations of the biomechanical function of the rib cage, as well as of its morphology and movement. The assessment of such pathologies could benefit from rib cage kinematic analysis during breathing, but this analysis is challenging because of the difficulties in observing and quantifying bone movements in vivo. This work explored the feasibility of using biplanar x-rays to study rib cage modifications at different lung volumes and evaluated the potential of the method to characterize rib cage kinematic patterns in patients. A summary of preoperative and postoperative cardiorespiratory performance in patients undergoing pectus excavatum and carinatum repair.

Preoperative and postoperative pulmonary function tests and progressive work exercise performances were compared for fourteen pectus excavat … se findings support the hypothesis that both the restricted cardiac stroke volume and the increased work of breathing that have been described in pectus excavatum patients can be ameliorated by operative intervention.

On applying continuous wavelet transform in wheeze analysis.

The identification of continuous abnormal lung sounds, like wheezes, in the total breathing cycle is of great importance in the diagnosis of obstructive airways pathologies. To this vein, the current work introduces an efficient method for the detection of wheezes, based on the time-scale representation of breath sound recordings. The employed Continuous Wavelet Transform is proven to be a valuable tool at this direction, when combined with scale-dependent thresholding. Analysis of lung sound recordings from 'wheezing' patients shows promising performance in the detection and extraction of whe

Determination of sevoflurane and isopropyl alcohol in exhaled breath by thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for exposure assessment of hospital staff.

Volatile anaesthetics and disinfection chemicals pose ubiquitous inhalation and dermal exposure risks in hospital and clinic environments. This work demonstrates specific non-invasive breath biomonitoring methodology for assessing staff exposures to sevoflurane (SEV) anaesthetic, documenting its metabolite hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) and measuring exposures to isopropanol (IPA) dermal disinfection fluid. Methods are based on breath sample collection in Nalophan bags, followed by an aliquot transfer to adsorption tube, and subsequent analysis by thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spect

Assessing gas exchange.

In clinical practice there are two sorts of measurements, a) arterial oxygen and carbon dioxide partial pressure (PaO2, PaCO2) or arterial o … ensation" failure, either chemo-insensitivity ("won't breathe") or neuromuscular weakness/increased work of breathing ("cannot breathe"). Chronic respiratory failure may progress to acute failure in which PaCO2 falls and PaCO2 rises progressively, assisted ventilation is usually required. The failing inspiratory muscles under normoxic and hypoxic conditions.

The effects of hypoxemia on inspiratory muscle fatigue were assessed in 4 normal subjects. They breathed to exhaustion through high inspiratory resistances producing an inspiratory mouth pressure (Pm) of about 80% of maximal mouth pressure. The endurance time (tlim) during hypoxia (13% O2) was found to be shorter than that while breathing room air at equal inspiratory mouth pressures. Endurance time during hypoxia was also compared with that while breathing room air at equal rates of energy consumption (C), assuming that C is proportional to: Formula: (See Text). At these equal rates, enduranc

Case Studies in Physiology: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing and inspiratory muscle training in a 59-year-old, 4 years after an extrapleural pneumonectomy.

This case report characterizes the physiological responses to incremental cycling and determines the effects of 12 wk of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on respiratory muscle strength, exercise capacity, and dyspnea in a physically active 59-yr-old female, 4 years after a left-sided extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP). On separate days, a symptom-limited incremental exercise test and a constant work rate (CWR) test at 75% of peak work rate (WR) were completed, followed by 12 wk of IMT and another CWR test. IMT consisted of two sessions of 30 repetitions twice daily for 5 days per week. Physiolo

Sensation of breathlessness and respiratory oxygen cost during cycle exercise with and without conscious entrainment of the breathing rhythm.

The conscious entrainment of respiratory rhythm to exercise rhythm (ENT) has been hypothesized to alleviate breathing discomfort and reduce the oxygen (O2) cost of ventilation with a resulting decrease in total O2 uptake (VO2) during rhythmic exercise. This hypothesis has been tested in the study reported here. Eight female subjects performed cycle exercise at 50 rpm under two work load conditions of 40% and 60% of maximal VO2. During a 30-min exercise period at each work load, each subject was asked to breathe under two conditions for 15 min each: (1) spontaneously (non-ENT run), and (2) deli

Executive function in patients with obstructive sleep apnea treated with continuous positive airway pressure.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by disrupted breathing and hypoxemia during sleep, daytime sleepiness, and changes in cognition and mood. One important question is regarding the reversibility of cognitive deficits after treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Here, we report the outcomes of CPAP treatment as measured by tests of attention and executive function. Thirty-seven individuals with moderate to severe OSA and compliant on CPAP treatment were studied with working memory tasks, neuropsychological testing, and overnight polysomnographic sleep study and c

A numerical assessment of social distancing of preventing airborne transmission of COVID-19 during different breathing and coughing processes.

The spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continues to show that geographic barriers alone cannot contain the virus. Asymptomatic carriers play a critical role in the nature of this virus, which is rapidly escalating into a global pandemic. Asymptomatic carriers can inadvertently transmit the virus through the air stream. Many diseases can infect human bodies with tiny droplets or particles that carry various viruses and bacteria that are generated by the respiratory system of infected patients. This article presents the numerical results of the spread of droplets or particles in

Physiological basis of non-invasive ventilation in the newborn.

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is a form of respiratory support provided primarily to preterm born infants in an effort to avoid any endotra … r the developing lung. Non-invasive ventilation can unload the respiratory muscles and decrease the work of breathing as reported by studies that compare the measured work of breathing at increasing levels of non-invasive support. NIV can also be beneficial in moderating the frequency and intensity of apnea of prematurity. Unintended physiological effects of NIV in …

Respiratory symptoms and peak expiratory flow in children with asthma in relation to volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath and ambient air.

Indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been associated with asthma, but there is little epidemiologic work on ambient exposures, and no data on relationships between respiratory health and exhaled breath VOCs, which is a biomarker of VOC exposure. We recruited 26 Hispanic children with mild asthma in a Los Angeles community with high VOC levels near major freeways and trucking routes. Two dropped out, three had invalid peak expiratory flow (PEF) or breath VOC data, leaving 21. Children filled out symptom diaries and performed PEF maneuvers daily, November 1999-January 2000. We aimed to
