Return of individual research results from genome-wide association studies: experience of the Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Network.

PURPOSE: Return of individual genetic results to research participants, including participants in archives and biorepositories, is receiving increased attention. However, few groups have deliberated on specific results or weighed deliberations against relevant local contextual factors. METHODS: The Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Network, which includes five biorepositories conducting genome-wide association studies, convened a return of results oversight committee to identify potentially returnable results. Network-wide deliberations were then brought to local constituencies

A use-and-transformation model for evaluating public R&D: illustrations from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) research.

Evaluating federally funded research and development (R&D) presents unique challenges to both federal science agencies and evaluators. Often focusing only on outcome evaluative measures (such as productivity or economic value) can shortchange the true value of the federal investment. For example, program directors at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) talk about the "value added" of the new interdisciplinary science centers that they have funded-and they hope to be able to capture how funding can generate increased capacity for new cutting-edge resear

CRISPRing through time: How cutting-edge technology is revolutionizing life sciences and medicine.

Given the plethora of emerging technologies, none have truly captured the minds as CRISPR. From the groundbreaking research, the ultimate battle of the prizes and patents to a number of books, the science of CRISPR continues to be significant in the biomedical field. For many decades now, the emergence of synthetic biology as an intervention to correct diseases has become the foundation of biomedical research. Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)-based genetic editing has become a common place for routine investigation of scientific hypotheses in pre-clinical sett…

A biopsychosocial approach to fatigue in primary sclerosing cholangitis: Potentially modifiable factors in the prospective SOMA.LIV study.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a debilitating symptom in autoimmune liver disease, but prospective research on fatigue in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) remains limited. This study aimed to estimate fatigue frequency in patients with PSC and explore cross-sectional and prospective biopsychosocial associations with fatigue severity. METHODS: This prospective study included 226 patients with PSC. Fatigue severity was assessed using the PBC-40 fatigue domain at baseline and six-month follow-up. Biomedical, psychological and social variables were assessed using clinical records, blood biomarkers an

Characteristics of HIV epidemics driven by men who have sex with men and people who inject drugs.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To highlight the latest developments in mathematical transmission modelling of HIV epidemics among men who have sex with men (MSM) and people who inject drugs (PWID). RECENT FINDINGS: Mathematical approaches have been applied to a wide range of topics in recent HIV research. Epidemiological models have evaluated past and forecasted future trends in prevalence and incidence, evaluated innovative behaviour modification strategies and public health programmes aimed at minimizing risk, and explored the potential impact of various biomedical interventions. MSM have developed new

The African Green Monkey model for cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis.

Non-human primates are valuable models for biomedical research because of their similarities to human anatomy, immunology and physiology. Leishmaniasis, a disease caused by protozoan parasites, has a worldwide distribution and results in high morbidity and mortality. Availability of a non-human primate model of leishmaniasis would facilitate the study of different aspects of this disease and would accelerate the development of vaccines and new drugs. In this article, some interesting features of the vervet monkey (African Green monkey) model of human cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis are di…

Some aspects of the history of membrane-damaging toxins.

In this review the following topics are considered: (a) the character of biomedical research and how it has changed during the last six decades; (b) the early history of membrane-damaging toxins; (c) comparative toxinology as illustrated by similarity of the toxins of the brown recluse spider and the bacterial agent of peudotuberculosis, and by similarity of a toxin of a sea anemone and the thiol-activated membrane-damaging agents of bacteria; (d) examples of the diversity of membrane-damaging toxins; (e) cooperative or synergistic lytic systems; and (f) the outlook for the future.

Feminism, eating, and mental health.

Eating disorders are prevalent health problems for women today. The traditional biomedical or psychiatric approaches offer a narrow perspective of the problem, its courses, and its treatment. Analyzing disordered eating from a feminist perspective, this article discusses cultural, political, and social phenomena that have had a significant impact on the development of these disorders. Parallels of eating disorders and other women's mental illnesses and the medicalization of their symptoms is explored. A "new view" of disordered eating in women is proposed that can be advanced only through femi

Therapeutic Delivery of Nitric Oxide Utilizing Saccharide-Based Materials.

As a gasotransmitter, nitric oxide (NO) regulates physiological pathways and demonstrates therapeutic effects such as vascular relaxation, anti-inflammation, antiplatelet, antithrombosis, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. However, gaseous NO has high reactivity and a short half-life, so NO delivery and storage are critical questions to be solved. One way is to develop stable NO donors and the other way is to enhance the delivery and storage of NO donors from biomaterials. Most of the researchers studying NO delivery and applications are using synthetic polymeric materials, and they have

Evaluation of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of ectromelia (mousepox) antibody.

Ectromelia virus, an orthopoxvirus that can cause extensive morbidity and mortality (mousepox) in colonized mice, has been epizootically responsible for serious disruption of biomedical research since 1930. The lack of a sensitive and specific serological assay for infection with this virus became apparent during outbreaks of mousepox at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md., and other biomedical research institutions in 1979 and 1980. To fill this need, we evaluated an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Sucrose gradient-purified ectromelia and vaccinia viruses were compared as anti…

Social representations of malaria in a southern malian community: an ethnographic qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is one of the prime reasons for medical consultation and the major cause of morbidity and mortality in Mali. To assess and understand the dynamics of social representations of malaria, the anthropological research was conducted in the Wayerema II neighbourhood of the health district of Sikasso, southern Mali. METHODS: This was an ethnographic study conducted qualitatively in 2011 and 2016 through informal conversations, 70 semi-structured interviews, and participant observations with key actors. The observations, conversations, and interviews investigated local people's pe

'A thing full of stories': Traditional healers' explanations of epilepsy and perspectives on collaboration with biomedical health care in Cape Town.

The experience of epilepsy is profoundly culturally mediated and the meanings attributed to the condition can have a great impact on its social course. This qualitative study used Kleinman's Explanatory Model framework to explore traditional healers' perspectives on epilepsy in an urban township in Cape Town, South Africa. The healers who participated in the study were Xhosa-speaking, had experience caring for patients with epilepsy, and had not received any training on epilepsy. Six individual in-depth interviews and one focus group with nine traditional healers were conducted using a semi-st

High-Plex Spatial Profiling of RNA and Protein Using Digital Spatial Profiler.

The rapid emergence of spatial multi-omics technologies in recent years has revolutionized biomedical research. Among these, the Digital Spatial Profiler (DSP, commercialized by nanoString) has become one of the dominant technologies in spatial transcriptomics and proteomics and has assisted in deconvoluting complex biological questions. Based on our practical experience in the past 3 years with DSP, we share here a detailed hands-on protocol and key handling notes that will allow the broader community to optimize their work procedure.
