Developmental deglutition and intrinsic tongue muscle maturation phenotypes in the Ts65Dn mouse model of Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Down syndrome (DS) is associated with difficulties with feeding during infancy and childhood. Weaning, or transitioning from nursing to independent deglutition, requires developmental progression in tongue function. However, little is known about whether postnatal tongue muscle maturation is impacted in DS. This study tested the hypothesis that the Ts65Dn mouse model of DS has developmental delays in deglutition, comprised of differences in eating and drinking behaviors relative to euploid controls, coinciding with atypical measures of intrinsic tongue muscle microanatomy. Early adaptive schemas, emotional regulation, and cognitive flexibility in eating disorders: subtype specific predictors of eating disorder symptoms using hierarchical linear regression.

PURPOSE: Understanding how early adaptive schemas, cognitive flexibility, and emotional regulation influence eating disorder (ED) symptoms, and whether this differs across diagnostic subtypes is critical to optimising treatment. The current study investigated the relationship between these variables and ED symptomology in individuals self-reporting an ED diagnosis and healthy controls. METHODS: A dataset of 1576 online survey responses yielded subsamples for anorexia nervosa (n = 155), bulimia nervosa (n = 55), binge eating disorder (n = 33), other specified feeding or eating disorder (n = 93

Transmission of yellow fever vaccine virus from breast feeding mothers to their infants: reporting of yellow fever virus (YFV) RNA detection in milk specimens.

BACKGROUND: Because of yellow fever's serious impact on health, vaccination is the principal strategy to control the disease. Administration of the yellow fever vaccine to breastfeeding women should be before they complete 9 months post-delivery, in order to prevent transmission of the yellow fever vaccine virus to their infants through breast feeding. This study aimed to confirm whether the excretion of yellow fever vaccine virus is in milk of vaccinated breastfeeding mothers and to confirm the probable transmission to their infants through breast milk. METHODS: Samples were taken as follows

A Bi-Institutional Study of Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Manifestations in Children With PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) confers a high risk of specific cancers and is the most common genetic cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Gastrointestinal (GI) phenotypes in PHTS are poorly characterized in children. Thus, we aimed to characterize the GI and hepatic manifestations in children with PHTS and to investigate genotype-phenotype associations. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of prospectively accrued children with PHTS at 2 tertiary-care centers. Wilcoxon rank-sum, Chi-squared, and Fisher's exact tests and Firth's logistic regression

Consumption of a Single Dose of Prebiotic Galacto-Oligosaccharides Does Not Enhance Iron Absorption from Micronutrient Powders in Kenyan Infants: A Stable Iron Isotope Study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term feeding of prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) increases iron absorption in African infants, but the underlying mechanism and how long GOS need to be fed to infants to achieve an increase in absorption is uncertain. OBJECTIVES: In Kenyan infants, we tested whether the addition of GOS to a single test meal would affect iron absorption from a micronutrient powder (MNP) containing ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and another MNP containing ferrous fumarate (FeFum) and sodium iron ethylenediaminetetraacetate (NaFeEDTA). METHODS: In a randomized-entry, prospective crossover stud

Oral Pathobiont-Induced Changes in Gut Microbiota Aggravate the Pathology of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Mice.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Periodontitis increases the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); however, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, we show that gut dysbiosis induced by oral administration of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a representative periodontopathic bacterium, is involved in the aggravation of NAFLD pathology. METHODS: C57BL/6N mice were administered either vehicle, P. gingivalis, or Prevotella intermedia, another periodontopathic bacterium with weaker periodontal pathogenicity, followed by feeding on a choline-deficient, l-amino acid-defined, high-fat diet with 60 kcal%
