Biofilms, communities of micro-organisms attached to a surface, are responsible for many chronic diseases and are often associated with environmental reservoirs or lifestyles. Bacillus anthracis is a Gram-positive, endospore-forming bacterium and is the aetiological agent of pulmonary, gastrointestinal and cutaneous anthrax. Anthrax infections are part of the natural lifecycle of many ruminants in North America, including cattle and bison, and B. anthracis is thought to be a central part of this ecosystem. However, in endemic areas in which humans and livestock interact, chronic cases of cutan

Cryptococcal meningitis is a common infection in patients with AIDS. Using a murine cryptococcosis model, we compared treatment with a new triazole, D0870, and fluconazole. Groups of ICR (Institute for Cancer Research) mice were infected intracerebrally with eight different isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans variety neoformans with different in vitro susceptibilities to fluconazole. For survival studies mice were challenged with two to four times LD(50) or six to nine times LD(50). Treatment was given for 10 days. Mice were observed through to day 30. To assess the effect of treatment on fung

Lactoferrin, a natural iron-binding protein found in tears, possesses antimicrobial properties that may help combat colonisation of the ocular surface by pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study examined how human lactoferrin affects P. aeruginosa adhesion, biofilm formation, and entry into corneal cells. Human lactoferrin antimicrobial, anti-biofilm, and anti-invasion effects against six P. aeruginosa strains were measured using minimum inhibitory concentration microdilution assays, crystal violet biofilm inhibition and degradation assays, and viable colony counts. Its ability to

The scope of the antibacterial effects of plasma-activated water (PAW) is not yet fully comprehended. We investigated the activity of PAW produced by the in-house 3-pin atmospheric pressure plasma jet against carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis, with a focus on PAW's potential to promote susceptibility to conventional antibiotics in these bacteria. Bacterial inactivation was determined by the colony count after 15 and 60 min PAW treatments. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) measured following repeated exposures to PAW across multiple

UNLABELLED: When susceptible bacterial cultures are treated with antibiotics, some cells can survive treatment without heritable resistance, giving rise to susceptible daughter cells in a phenomenon termed antibiotic persistence. Current models of fluoroquinolone (FQ) persistence in stationary-phase cultures posit that post-treatment resuscitation is dependent on double-stranded break (DSB) repair through RecA-mediated homology-directed repair. Previously, we reported that stationary-phase P. aeruginosa does not depend on RecA to persist. In this work, we ask whether P. aeruginosa FQ persister

Sonodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (SACT), as a novel anti-infective program, has received tremendous attention due to its good tissue penetration depth and low invasion. Ultrasound (US) frequency was one of the important parameters for SACT. To investigate the influence of different US frequencies on sonodynamic antimicrobial activity of ciprofloxacin-capped gold nanoparticles (CIP:GNPs). C. albicans and E. coli were chosen as the action objects. The bacterial survival rate was used in the assessment index and measured by plate colony-counting methods. The bacterium Escherichia coli is one of the main causes of urinary tract infections. The formation of bacterial biofilms, especially associated with the use of urinary catheters, contributes to the establishment of recurrent infections and the development of resistance to treatment. Strains of E. coli that produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) have a greater ability to form biofilms. In addition, there is a lack of drugs available in the market with antibiofilm activity. Promethazine (PMZ) is an antihistamine known to have antimicrobial activity against different pathogens, includi

Aspergillus fumigatus (Af) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) are pathogens inhabiting the lungs of persons with cystic fibrosis (CF), or immune-compromised patients, causing or aggravating disease. We previously investigated their microbial interaction as well as susceptibility to anti-fungal drugs using RPMI medium (contains undetectable iron concentrations), as is standard for susceptibility testing. Here we investigated microbial interaction in synthetic sputum medium (SSPM), a complex mixture designed to mimic the milieu in CF lungs. SSPM contains Fe2+. Pa laboratory strain PA14 or PA14 side

Inhibition of β-lactamases is a promising strategy to overcome antimicrobial resistance to commonly used β-lactam antibiotics. Boronic acid derivatives have proven to be effective inhibitors of β-lactamases due to their direct interaction with the catalytic site of these enzymes. We synthesized a series of phenylboronic acid derivatives and evaluated their structure-activity relationships as Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC-2) inhibitors. We identified potent KPC-2 inhibitors 2e & 6c (Ki = 0.032 μM and 0.038 μM, respectively) that enhance the activity of cefotaxime in KPC-2 expressing

BACKGROUND: One main challenge in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication is its increasing antibiotic resistance. Additionally, resistance rates vary between geographic areas and periods. However, data are limited since susceptibility testing is not routinely performed. Thus, it is valuable to gather data regarding H. pylori's resistance rates in Israel that would aid in better adjustment of treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 540 H. pylori isolates, recovered from gastric biopsy samples of patients who had undergone endoscopy, during 2015-2020, at the Padeh Poriya Medic

Antimicrobial-resistant pathogens display significant public health threats by causing difficulties in clinical treatment of bacterial infection. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is transmissible between bacteria, significantly increasing the appearance of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens and aggravating the AMR problem. In this work, the dissemination dynamics of AMR from invading multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli to a community of pathogenic Salmonella enterica was investigated using a continuous-culture device, and the behaviors of dissemination dynamics under different levels of an
