Highly flexible self-powered sensors based on printed circuit board technology for human motion detection and gesture recognition.

In this paper, we demonstrate a new integration of printed circuit board (PCB) technology-based self-powered sensors (PSSs) and direct-write … ors on gloves, bandages and stockings to fabricate devices that can detect different types of human motion, including finger motion and various flexing and extensions of an ankle. The firmly glued PSSs were tested on the glove and ankle respectively to detect and harvest the various movements and the output voltage was recorded as ∼1.5 V under jumping mo …

Pulmonary Annular Motion Velocity Assessed Using Doppler Tissue Imaging - Novel Echocardiographic Evaluation of Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Function.

BACKGROUND: We assessed whether measuring pulmonary annular motion velocity could serve as a novel method of evaluating right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) performance in pediatric patients with heart disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: Tissue Doppler-derived pulmonary annular motion velocity was determined from the parasternal long-axis view of the RVOT. Pulmonary annular velocity was measured in children (age, 5-10 years) with an atrial septal defect (ASD), pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), surgically repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and healthy children (control). Pulmonary annular vel…

4D Blood Flow Reconstruction Over the Entire Ventricle From Wall Motion and Blood Velocity Derived From Ultrasound Data.

We demonstrate a new method to recover 4D blood flow over the entire ventricle from partial blood velocity measurements using multiple 3D+t colour Doppler images and ventricular wall motion estimated using 3D+t BMode images. We apply our approach to realistic simulated data to ascertain the ability of the method to deal with incomplete data, as typically happens in clinical practice. Experiments using synthetic data show that the use of wall motion improves velocity reconstruction, shows more accurate flow patterns and improves mean accuracy particularly when coverage of the ventricle is poor.…

A time and motion study of peripheral venous catheter flushing practice using manually prepared and prefilled flush syringes.

Peripheral venous catheters (PVCs) are the simplest and most frequently used method for drug, fluid, and blood product administration in the hospital setting. It is estimated that up to 90% of patients in acute care hospitals require a PVC; however, PVCs are associated with inherent complications, which can be mechanical or infectious. There have been a range of strategies to prevent or reduce PVC-related complications that include optimizing patency through the use of flushing. Little is known about the current status of flushing practice. This observational study quantified preparation and a

Three-dimensional motion analysis of postural adjustments during over-ground locomotion in a rat model of Parkinson's disease.

Postural instability, a symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, leads to frequent falls and difficulty in forward motion during gait. These motor deficits are mainly caused by neurodegenerative processes in the brain leading to reduced levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Postural studies involving animal models of PD are mainly based on movement scores or descriptive approaches to discerning differences in behaviour or function. Our aim was to describe postural adjustments in a rat model of PD utilising a quantitative three dimensional motion analysis technique during gait to invest…

Impaired recognition of emotions from body movements is associated with elevated motion coherence thresholds in autism spectrum disorders.

Recent research has confirmed that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulties in recognizing emotions from body movements. Difficulties in perceiving coherent motion are also common in ASD. Yet it is unknown whether these two impairments are related. Thirteen adults with ASD and 16 age- and IQ-matched typically developing (TD) adults classified basic emotions from point-light and full-light displays of body movements and discriminated the direction of coherent motion in random-dot kinematograms. The ASD group was reliably less accurate in classifying emotions regardless …

Laryngeal electromyography findings in a patient with HIV, John Cunningham virus and bilateral true vocal fold motion impairment.

We present the findings from laryngeal electromyography (EMG) on a 33-year-old HIV-positive male who presented with decreased vocal endurance and a breathy voice. Management considerations were broadened by the history of John Cunningham (JC) virus recovered from his cerebrospinal fluid and the consequent diagnosis of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. We reviewed the available literature on neuropathy, HIV, JC virus and how all these factors relate to voice disturbances. We present laryngeal EMG findings, discuss the benefit of electrodiagnostic studies, and offer an algorithm for in

Deficits of visual motion perception and optokinetic nystagmus after posterior suprasylvian lesions in the ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

We recently described an area in the ferret posterior suprasylvian (PSS) cortex characterized by a high proportion of direction selective neurons. To answer the question whether area PSS subserves functions similar to cat posteromediolateral suprasylvian area (PMLS) and monkey medial temporal area (MT) we investigated the contribution of area PSS to visual motion perception and optokinetic nystagmus. Ferrets were tested on global motion detection before and after bilateral lesions involving area PSS and control lesions of other extrastriate visual areas. Following PSS lesions motion coherence …

Frequency and mechanism of persistent systolic anterior motion and mitral regurgitation after septal ablation in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Relief of obstruction using ventricular septal ablation (VSA) may not eliminate systolic anterior motion (SAM) of the mitral valve and mitral regurgitation (MR) in patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The hypothesis was that persistent SAM after VSA was secondary to anterior papillary muscle displacement and malcoaptation of mitral valve leaflets and that these findings could predict persistence of SAM. Echocardiograms were examined from 37 patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy before and 12+/-3 months after VSA. Anterior leaflet malposition (anterior-to-poste…

Electrically-evoked control of the swinging leg after spinal cord injury: open-loop or motion sensor-assisted control?

In paraplegics, gait can be restored by means of functional electrical stimulation (FES). Because the electrophysiological responses of the lower limbs to the neuromuscular stimulus are not completely deterministic, several stimulation strategies have been reported in an attempt to refine stepping motion. In open-loop (OL) systems, the electrical stimulation sequences applied over the leg muscles are often tuned for each patient in order to improve the quality of gait. Our aim was to contrast this traditional technique against variable stimulation sequences based on motion sensors (MS) data fe…

Muscle strain on the radial wrist extensors during motion-simulating stretching exercises for lateral epicondylitis: a cadaveric study.

The purpose of this study is to measure muscle strain on the extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) and extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) in cadavers and to identify effective stretching positions. In 12 frozen/thawed cadaveric arms, a strain gauge was attached to the ECRL and ECRB muscles, and increases in muscle strain were measured from a standard position (45 degrees elbow flexion, neutral forearm, and neutral wrist) to 12 sequential arm and wrist positions. Muscle strain on the ECRL and ECRB with the elbow at 45 degrees flexion was less than 10% regardless of forearm and wrist position
