Perception of COVID-19 Vaccination and Uptake Willingness in Northern Nigeria: Understanding Strategies to Optimize Coverage.

Background: Vaccination is a proven and safe method for combating COVID-19; however, coverage remains low in many low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria. There is also a lack of contextual evidence regarding the public perception of and willingness to receive vaccines. This study aims to contribute to efforts to optimize the vaccination coverage and improve public health in northern Nigeria. Objective: This study investigated the perceptions of COVID-19 vaccination and willingness to uptake the vaccine in northern Nigeria, aiming to identify strategies for optimizing coverage and …

Is self-perception related to speech perceptual analysis measures in early- and late-onset Parkinson's disease?

UNLABELLED: Dysarthria is prevalent in Parkinson's disease (PD) and has negative effects on communication and social interaction. A gap exists in understanding whether patient-reported outcome measures can effectively identify speech disorders prematurely. OBJECTIVE: Compare the relationship between patients' reported outcome measures and the speech objective outcome measure between early-onset (EOPD) and late-onset Parkinson's disease (LOPD). METHODS: Thirty-nine participants diagnosed before age 50 (EOPD) and 32 diagnosed older than 50 (LOPD) were included. Self-perception was collected th…

Double dissociation of dynamic and static face perception provides causal evidence for a third visual pathway.

The two-pathway ventral ("what") and dorsal ("where") model of visual perception has dominated neuroscience for over 30 years. In this framework, face perception, crucial for social interactions, is linked to the ventral pathway, which processes static features. However, dynamic facial expressions activate the superior temporal sulcus, outside both established pathways. An alternative model recently proposed a third visual pathway dedicated to dynamic facial expressions. Using neuroimaging and behavioral testing in 108 patients with focal brain lesions, we provide causal evidence of a double d…

Fear perception as a function of hemisphere- and time-specific dynamics in the medial temporal lobes.

The medial temporal lobes (mTL) are thought to enhance visual processing of fearful faces, yet the underlying mechanisms remain underspecified. To fill this gap, we recorded and compared event-related potentials (ERPs) and stimulus-induced gamma-band activity (GBA) from 36 patients with left- or right-hemispheric antero-medial temporal lobe resections including the amygdala (lTLR/rTLR) and 18 healthy controls. Only rTLR patients were found to lack fear-neutral differentiation in early P1 amplitudes (~100 ms) and exhibited heightened GBA for neutral faces over ipsi-resectional occipito-temporal

Stimulating the Human Olfactory Bulb to Evoke Smell Perception: A Case Report from Awake Brain Surgery.

<p>Introduction: Approximately one-third of patients with olfactory dysfunction would consider the option of an olfactory implant, a device that would sample odorants and translate this information into an electrical stimulation of the brain to produce an olfactory percept. However, the brain location for placement of such a device is to date still debated. Case Presentation: We describe the single-case of a patient with left-sided frontotemporal astrocytoma who reported perceiving a lemon smell after electrical stimulation in the olfactory bulb. Conclusion: The awake-brain surgery provides a

Application and Perception of Hypnosis in Dental Practice: A Cross-Sectional Survey in German-Speaking Regions.

Despite its benefits, hypnosis remains underutilized in dental practice, largely due to misconceptions. This study assessed its use and perception among dentists in German-speaking countries. A validated questionnaire was distributed to a total of 1,081 members of hypnosis societies in Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, yielding 271 replies (response rate: 25.1%). Of these, 57.6% were retired or nearing retirement, and only 10% had graduated in the past 15 years. Most (64.2%) first encountered hypnosis during postgraduate training, while 91.1% supported its inclusion in pre-graduate dent…

Examination of teachers' emotional intelligence competence perception levels in terms of sportive activity and different variables.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines whether teachers' emotional intelligence (EI) competence perception levels specifically dimensions such as self-regulation, empathy, and social skills-differ according to sports activity and demographic variables. EI plays a crucial role in fostering effective classroom management and teacher-student interaction. It was hypothesized that teachers who engage in both individual and team sports would demonstrate higher levels of emotional intelligence compared to those who do not participate in sports or engage in only one type. METHOD: Using a descriptive surve…

A bio-inspired research paradigm of collision perception neurons enabling neuro-robotic integration: the LGMD case.

Compared with human vision, locust visual systems excel at rapid and precise collision detection, despite relying on only hundreds of thousands of neurons organized through a few neuropils. This efficiency makes them an attractive model system for developing artificial collision-detecting systems. Specifically, researchers have identified collision-selective neurons in the locust's optic lobe, called lobula giant movement detectors (LGMDs), which respond specifically to approaching objects. Research upon LGMD neurons began in the early 1970s. Initially, due to their large size, these neurons w

Visual navigation is affected by low-dose alcohol use: Not in perception but in visuomotor control.

INTRODUCTION: The detrimental effects of alcohol use on driving-related cognition have been widely reported. However, most evidence regarding cognitive impairment focuses on moderate to high blood alcohol concentrations (BAC ≥0.04 g/dl), while the effects at low BAC levels are less frequently discussed and yield mixed results. We investigated whether and how low-dose alcohol consumption at a BAC level of 0.03 g/dl affects visual navigation via optic flow, which features in driving-related tasks. METHOD: To examine the distinct effects of low-dose alcohol use on perception and visuomotor contr…

[Perception of the transition process from pediatric to adult care in preterm and full-term infants].

The number of premature births is rising globally, and medical needs are often complex. The transition from pediatric to adult healthcare is a critical phase that, without adequate support, may lead to difficulties. Especially extremely preterm infants face long-term health challenges requiring specialized care. This retrospective study examined how mothers perceive the transition process of their preterm and term-born children. We analyzed whether perinatal factors such as low gestational age (GA) influence transition experiences and adult healthcare. Additionally, healthcare utilization and

Weight perception and risk of non-communicable diseases among women: A cross-sectional study in Ghana.

Objective measures of overweight/obesity have shown consistent association with other key non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as type II diabetes and hypertension, but there is a gap in knowledge about the role of how people's perceived weight in the aetiology of these diseases, especially in the African context. This study investigated the relationship between weight perception and NCD risk factors among women living in an urban setting in Ghana. A cross-sectional design was employed to recruit 378 female adults aged 18-65 years in the Accra Metropolis using convenience sampling method. Wei…

Affective touch enhances low gamma activity during hand proprioceptive perception in children with different neurodevelopmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Gamma wave activity in the sensorimotor cortex is a critical neural mechanism associated with proprioceptive processing, which is essential for motor coordination, balance, and spatial orientation. The modulation of gamma oscillations by different types of tactile stimuli, including affective touch, is not well understood, particularly in children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorder. AIMS: This study aims to explore how affective touch influences gamma oscillatory activity and proprioceptive performance in children with typical dev
