Peer Cybervictimization Among Adolescents and the Associated Internalizing and Externalizing Problems: A Meta-Analysis.

Numerous adolescents in the United States experience peer cybervictimization, which is associated with a series of internalizing (e.g., depression, anxiety, anger) and externalizing (e.g., aggression, substance use, risky sexual behavior) problems. The current study provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing research on these relationships. Included in the meta-analyses are 239 effect sizes from 55 reports, representing responses from 257,678 adolescents. The results of a series of random effects meta-analyses using robust variance estimation indicated positive and significant

Prescription drug abuse among adolescent arrestees: correlates and implications.

This preliminary study examines the correlates of prescription drug abuse in a sample of adolescents in an urban juvenile detention center in Ohio. The study measures risk in 359 incarcerated females (20.1%) and 1,425 males (79.9%) by asking questions related to problems with alcohol, drug use, treatment history, mental and physical health problems, sexual behavior, anger management, physical violence, and family support. The results of the study suggest that incarcerated adolescents may benefit from interventions targeting prescription drug misuse. Female adolescent detainees abuse prescripti

Unique problems of dementia in the younger patient.

While dementia is often thought of as a problem unique to the elderly patient, nearly one in ten patients with dementia is younger than 65. The etiologies of dementia in this population are varied, including a genetically inherited form of Alzheimer's disease, as well as dementia related to other problems such as Parkinson's disease, Down syndrome, and cerebrovascular disease. Health care practitioners may have difficulty diagnosing early onset dementia because the diagnostic tools and the disease manifestation differ from those of the elderly patient. In addition, treatment of early-onset dem

Personality traits and psychological factors in voice pathology: a foundation for future research.

It has been argued that personality, emotions, and psychological problems contribute to or are primary causes of voice disorders and that voice disorders in turn create psychological problems and personality effects. This article (a) briefly reviews the literature surrounding the role of psychological and personality processes in individuals with functional dysphonia (FD), vocal nodules (VN), and spasmodic dysphonia (SD); (b) provides an overview of recent concepts in personality and trait structure; and (c) summarizes the fundamental tenets of a theoretical synthesis proposed by Roy and Bless

Gender differences at admission and follow-up in a sample of methadone maintenance clients.

Although one-third of clients enrolled in methadone treatment in the United States are female, few studies have looked at gender differences at admission and follow-up. Using interview data from 435 clients (31% female) collected at admission and approximately 1 year after discharge, females were found to have more dysfunctional families of origin and greater prior and current psychological and medical problems. Both genders improved following treatment, as evidenced by reduced illicit drug, tobacco, and alcohol use, criminal involvement, and HIV/AIDS-risky behaviors. Females were more likely

Outcomes for children exposed to drugs in utero.

Substance abuse among pregnant women remains a national health issue. The incidence of infants born addicted to licit and illicit substances is increasing. The long-term outcomes have not been consistently documented. These appear to include mild to severe developmental and cognitive problems, depending upon the substance used. Central nervous system problems, behavioral dysfunction, and safety issues are major parental concerns for these children as they grow. Interventions must be aimed at thorough assessments, including an accurate maternal history, use of supports for positive neurodevelop

Perception and allocation of time by dyslexic children.

The perception and allocation of time by individuals is closely associated with their observed behaviors in life. A dyslexic child presents unique and interesting problems to educational researchers, teachers, and parents since the information-processing style differs from that of normal children. This study examined not the cognitive understanding of time or problems in measuring time (dyschronometria), but the perception and allocation of time by 26 normal and 21 dyslexic children between the ages of 10 years and 17 years old. These findings were measured by a specifically designed time allo

[Coping with illness in rheumatoid arthritis].

Rheumatoid arthritis, a lifelong chronic disease, creates serious psychosocial as well as medical problems. We investigated coping with rheumatoid arthritis in 50 patient. The examination of coping-strategies used by R. A.-patients seems to show no fundamental difference to the coping behavior of patients with other chronic diseases. Biomedical conditions of the disease (Rheumafactor sero-positiv, sero-negativ) are related to different coping-strategies. Patient without psychiatric problems have a better medical health condition and, compared to depressive R. A.-patient prefer more active and

Prenatal exposure to organophosphate esters and infantile neurobehavior: Integrating the gut microbiome and metabolome.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used flame retardants and plasticizers. Given their structural similarity to neurotoxic organophosphorus pesticides, concerns have been raised regarding their potential developmental neurotoxicity. However, epidemiologic evidence remains limited, and the roles of gut microbial and metabolic perturbations in these associations are not well characterized. We analyzed 404 mother-child pairs from the Shanghai Maternal-Child Pairs Cohort. OPE concentrations were quantified in cord serum. Meconium samples were profiled for gut microbiota and metabolomics, and

[Interpersonal Problems and their differential indicator function: On the Validity and Clinical Utility of the German IIP-32].

The present study examines the validity and clinical utility of the German version of the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-32) for assessing interpersonal difficulties and their associations with personality functioning, attachment dimensions, and self-perception in a large clinical sample. Interpersonal problems are closely linked to mental health disorders and are often a central focus of psychotherapeutic interventions. Recent findings underscore the importance of interpersonal aspects for understanding and treating mental health disorders, particularly personality disorders, especi

Drinking patterns of alcohol intoxicated adolescents in the emergency department: A latent class analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing number of children and adolescents in need of emergency medical treatment following acute alcohol intoxication has been a major public health concern in Europe in recent years. However, little is known about drinking habits and associated risks in this population. To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine drinking patterns and associated risks in adolescent emergency department patients following alcohol intoxication. The aim of this study is to establish a classification system for admitted adolescents METHODS: Latent class analysis was used to identif

The prevalence of mental illness in homeless children: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The numbers of children experiencing homelessness have increased. To develop responsive interventions, we must understand their mental health/behavioral needs. The purpose of this systematic review was to update the evidence base by identifying, appraising, and summarizing studies on the prevalence of mental health issues among homeless children, comparing these individuals to low-income-housed children, and discussing research, practice, and policy implications. METHOD: We searched 3 electronic databases and included empirical studies investigating the prevalence of mental illness

The association between mothers' psychopathology, childrens' competences and psychological well-being in obese children.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of childhood obesity is rapidly increasing, and many obese children suffer from emotional and behavior problems and mental disorders. Associations with social stigmatization of obesity, maternal psychopathology, socioeconomic status (SES) and resilience factors are discussed. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesize maternal psychopathology to have an impact on the psychological well-being of an obese child. We further hypothesize that competence factors within the child are important key factors that influence the way a child deals with the psychological burden of obesity. METHO

Respiratory health of 985 children exposed to the World Trade Center disaster: report on world trade center health registry wave 2 follow-up, 2007-2008.

BACKGROUND: The World Trade Center (WTC) disaster of September 11, 2001, has been associated with early respiratory problems including asthma in workers, residents, and children. Studies on adults have documented persistence of longer term, 9/11-related respiratory symptoms. There are no comparable reports on children. METHODS: We surveyed 985 children aged 5-17 years who enrolled in the WTC Health Registry in 2003-04, and who were re-surveyed in 2007-08. Health data were provided by parents in both surveys and focused on respiratory symptoms suggestive of reactive airway impairment (wheezing

A Turing Test for artificial nets devoted to vision.

In this work we argue that, despite recent claims about successful modeling of the visual brain using deep nets, the problem is far from being solved, particularly for low-level vision. Open issues include where should we read from in ANNs to check behavior? What should be the read-out? Is this ad-hoc read-out considered part of the brain model or not? In order to understand vision-ANNs, should we use artificial psychophysics or artificial physiology? Anyhow, should artificial tests literally match the experiments done with humans? These questions suggest a clear need for biologically sensible

Curriculum-Based Reinforcement Learning for Autonomous UAV Navigation in Unknown Curved Tubular Conduits.

Autonomous drone navigation in confined tubular environments remains a major challenge due to the constraining geometry of the conduits, the proximity of the walls, and the perceptual limitations inherent to such scenarios. We propose a reinforcement learning (RL) approach enabling a drone to navigate unknown three-dimensional tubes without any prior knowledge of their geometry, relying solely on local observations from a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor and a conditional visual detection of the tube center. In contrast, the Pure Pursuit algorithm, used as a deterministic baseline, b
