Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography with a special focus on a patient undergoing advanced robotic-assisted procedures.

Intraoperative echocardiography (IOE) has earned a major role in surgical decision-making and helps the cardiac surgeon decide and proceed with appropriate intervention based on the visualized pathology. With the advent of minimally invasive surgical techniques and robotic-assisted operations, more emphasis and dependence has been placed on IOE. We describe our experience with IOE during mitral valve repair at our center, which is one of the pioneer centers for these telemanipulation techniques.

Totally endoscopic atrial septal defect closure with a robotic system: experience with seven cases.

BACKGROUND: The development of minimally invasive cardiac surgery has shown good clinical results with shorter recovery time and better cosmetic results. The introduction of the robotic systems can further reduce the surgical trauma and improve the surgical dexterity. We report seven cases of complete closed chest atrial septal defect closure using the "da Vinci" Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical, Mountain View, CA). METHODS: Following peripheral cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), aortic occlusion and cardioplegia delivery, five patients with atrial septal defect (ASD) and two pa

Totally automated analysis by robotized PrepStation and liquid chromatography: direct-sample analysis of felbamate.

A totally automated analysis of felbamate was developed by using a robotized PrepStation for extraction, followed by automated liquid chromatographic (LC) analysis and data reduction. This is one of the newer direct-sample analysis approaches by LC. Felbamate was a previously approved antiepileptic agent used to treat partial seizures with and without generalization and to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in pediatric patients. However, due to the reported incidences of aplastic anemia, its clinical application was recently restricted to the treatment of the latter syndrome. The automated assay u

Structural bias enables reliable sim-to-real transfer in reinforcement learning for robot swarms.

Reinforcement learning offers a powerful framework for automatically generating control policies for robot swarms, yet its application to physical multirobot systems has been limited by the simulation-to-reality gap. Despite substantial advances in multiagent reinforcement learning, systematic demonstrations of gradient-based sim-to-real transfer to physical robot swarms remain scarce. Most work remains confined to simulation, and the few real-robot demonstrations lack evaluation across multiple runs and tasks. We show that this barrier can be overcome by embedding structural constraints into

Investigation of FBG Accelerometers and Load Sensors for Vibration Analysis and Slip Detection in Robotic Manipulators.

This paper presents an investigation of the viability of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) accelerometers and load sensors for two diagnostic tasks in robotics: vibration analysis of industrial manipulators and slip detection in robotic grippers. The study synthesizes experimental results from two independent experiments, focusing on the use of optical sensors in place of traditional electromechanical devices such as MEMS accelerometers and resistive strain gauges. The experiments were performed on an ABB industrial robot with a parallel robotic gripper equipped with embedded optical fibers. Under the…

Investigation of gear design parameters for soft-gear-driven self-propelled colonoscopy robot.

PURPOSE: Colonoscopy is the most effective method for colorectal cancer screening; however, successful insertion requires a high level of operator skill and may cause patient discomfort or injury. To address these challenges, self-propelled colonoscopy robots that generate propulsion at the distal tip have been actively investigated. In our previous work, we developed a self-propelled colonoscopy robot using a worm-gear mechanism; however, the use of rigid gears posed a potential risk of excessive contact force on the colonic wall. METHODS: In this study, we propose a self-propelled colonosco

Asymmetry-induced chiral dynamics in coupled self-propelled robots: Spinning and circular motion.

Motivated by the chiral motility of microswimmers, we investigate how geometric asymmetry in a system of two self-propelled active Brownian robots coupled by a spring gives rise to rich emergent dynamics. We demonstrate that asymmetry in the robots' propulsion directions generates net torques that induce persistent rotational motion. Depending on the choice of propulsion angles α_{1} and α_{2}, the system exhibits three distinct dynamical regimes-run-and-tumble motion, circular trajectories, and spinning-with the geometric configuration primarily determining the realized regime. We further sho

Co-optimized volumetric muscle design for large dynamic deformations in versatile biohybrid robots.

Biohybrid robots use engineered living muscle tissue as actuators, offering self-organization, adaptability, and self-healing. Current designs focus on improving muscle physiology but overlook the interplay between muscle and scaffold in the robot's function. We present a computational and experimental pipeline to co-optimize the form and function of centimeter-scale bioactuators. Using a soft-body simulation framework, we modeled unified muscle-scaffold systems and applied an evolutionary algorithm and targeted parameter sweeps to maximize range of motion. The resulting bioactuators, fabricat

AI-Assisted Volumetric Comparison of Parenchyma-Sparing Effect in Robotic Segmentectomy vs Lobectomy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In recent years, pulmonary segmentectomy has become a preferred treatment option for early-stage lung cancer. The primary factor encouraging clinicians to choose segmentectomy is the assumption of greater parenchymal preservation. In this study, we investigated the parenchyma-sparing effect of robotic pulmonary segmentectomy compared with robotic lobectomy using artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted 3-dimensional (3D) volumetric analysis. METHODS: Preoperative and postoperative thoracic computed tomography scans of patients diagnosed with lung cancer between January

Mitigating lateral sensing blind spots: A dual-segment bronchoscopic robot with a bioinspired skin.

Lateral force blind spots frequently trigger airway injuries during robotic bronchoscopy. Traditional sensing approaches lack fine spatial resolution, and single-segment robots suffer poor posture adjustment flexibility, worsening unmonitored tissue contact. We integrate a snake-scale-inspired 64-channel gradient piezoelectric film with a dual-segment manipulator to resolve lateral blind spots for secure bronchial navigation. The conformally wrapped sensor delivers fast (<10 ms), precise force detection (R2 > 0.98, RMSE < 0.145 N, CV < 2%) and filters bending pseudo-forces. The dual-segment de

Robust disturbance-aware actor-critic reinforcement learning for multi-DOF robotic manipulators.

Building on recent insights that augmenting reinforcement-learning policies with disturbance estimates improves robustness and sim-to-real transfer, this paper proposes a disturbance-aware actor-critic RL framework for high-precision robotic manipulators. We derive the dynamics of manipulators ranging from two to six degrees of freedom and design a nonlinear disturbance observer that provides real-time estimates of lumped uncertainties. Unlike conventional feedforward-only designs, the proposed DACRL framework deeply integrates DOB information into the actor-critic's learning state, cost funct
