To characterize sleep disorders in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients, we evaluated sleep quality of 101 non-selective patients from our MMT clinic in Israel between July, 2003 and July, 2004 by using the self-report questionnaire Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Patients' urine tests were analyzed for methadone metabolite, opiates, benzodiazepine, cocaine, cannabis and amphetamines. Their urine results for drug abuse throughout the months prior to filling in the questionnaire and their maintenance methadone doses were recorded. Drug abuse was defined by at least one positive

Treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychological traumas, whose cares are complex, need to be furthermore clarified since they recently became a major public health issue in the wake of the terrorists' attacks that struck France over the past three years. It is its temporality since the event which will determine the type of disorder which might appear thus its adequate processing treatment. Since its identification over a hundred years ago, the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) has proven to play an essential role in supporting many diverse functions. Some well-characterized functions include: chemical transmission at the neuromuscular junction; autonomic function in the peripheral nervous system; and, sustained attention, sleep/wake regulation, and learning and memory within the central nervous system. Within the brain, major cholinergic projection pathways from the basal forebrain and the brainstem support these centrally mediated processes, and dysregulation of the choliner

Narcolepsy, a chronic neurologic condition resulting from dysregulation of the sleep-wake cycle, usually has an onset at an early age. However, a long delay until diagnosis has been consistently reported in the literature across countries and several publications have focused on characterizing this delay. Most studies report a mean delay to diagnosis of up to 15 years, with individual cases of >60 years, although a trend over time toward a shorter diagnostic delay has been suggested. While variables associated with this delay have been identified, a lack of symptom recognition resulting in mis

Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents with estimated prevalence rates of between five and ten percent. Comorbidity rates are high--in particular for further anxiety and depressive disorders. The etiology is considered to be multifactorial, with genetic, biological and temperamental factors as well as stressful life events, parental role models and parenting all playing a part. Therapeutic programs combine psychological counseling--including the family--psychotherapy and psychopharmacotherapy, as required. As psychotherapy, cognitive-behav

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency, which is highly prevalent in modern society, is associated with health issues, including sleep-wake disorders and depression. This pilot study aimed to examine the relationship between dietary vitamin D intake or vitamin D synthesis from ultraviolet exposure and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels as an indicator of vitamin D status, as well as their association with sleep health and depressive symptoms.
METHODS: Twenty-nine young adult women participated in two surveys conducted in spring and summer. Vitamin D intake was estimated based on responses t

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in substantial mental health problems. In addition to the fear of infection, prevention policies that result in isolation such as lockdowns or, in Japan, "self-restraint," are associated with psychological symptoms. University students are vulnerable to emotional disorders because of the psychological challenges associated with the transition to adulthood. Therefore, we investigated changes in the mental health of university students before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: We used data from depression screening conducte

Severe affective and behavioral dysregulation, labeled as severe mood dysregulation (SMD), is a widely spread phenomenon among adolescent psychiatric patients. This phenotype constitutes severe impairment across multiple settings, including various symptoms, such as non-episodic anger, mood instability, and hyperarousal. Moreover, SMD patients often show depression and reduced need for sleep. Despite a lifetime prevalence of 3.3%, systematic research is still scarce, and treatments that have been established do not account for the range of symptoms present in SMD. Considering the circadian dys

It has been hypothesized that disruption of circadian rhythms affects human health. Shift work and sleep deprivation are thought to disrupt the normal light-dark cycle, although the disruption due to shiftwork may be dependent on sleep deprivation. Both conditions have been suggested to be associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic disorders. Non-photic environmental factors, such as the timing of eating, are also thought to regulate circadian rhythm and thus, may have effects on health, but the evidence from human studies is scarce. Oxidative stress is a risk factor of cardiometabol

Thalamic neurons are known to switch their firing from a tonic pattern during wakefulness to a bursting pattern during sleep. Several studies have described the existence of bursting activity in awake chronic pain patients and have suggested that this activity is abnormal and may be related to their pain. However, we have frequently observed bursting activity in awake non-pain patients suggesting that there may not be a causal relationship between thalamic bursting activity and chronic pain. To examine this issue more rigorously we compared the incidence and pattern of bursting activity of lat

OBJECTIVE: Bruxism is now understood as a multidimensional masticatory muscle behavior occurring during sleep and/or wakefulness, but no formal classification system exists to organize related oral behaviors and phenotypes.
METHODS: A closed international expert workshop was held at the 2025 IADR General Assembly in Barcelona. Three regional groups prepared reports on the need, desirable features, and possible structure of an International Classification of Oral Behaviors (ICOB). Presentations and discussions were synthesized into shared principles.
RESULTS: Consensus supported a classificat

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia is very common among individuals with Opioid Use Disorder [OUD] and can interfere with successful treatment. However, no pharmacotherapies with consistent efficacy for treating insomnia in this population have been identified.
AREAS COVERED: A selection of medications, including trazodone and mirtazapine, have been studied as treatments for insomnia among individuals with OUD. Results have been mixed and require interpretation in the context of small sample sizes and/or clinical trial design. Dual orexin-receptor antagonists [DORAs] have shown some promise as treatments

Orexins are hypothalamic neuropeptides primarily involved in regulating the sleep/wakefulness cycle and circadian rhythm. They bind to the orexin receptor type 1 (OX1) and type 2 (OX2), well-known drug targets in the treatment of sleep disorders, that have recently been shown to play a significant role in different cancers. Lemborexant is one of a few orexin receptor antagonists that have been approved for the treatment of insomnia. Despite being classified as an antagonist, lemborexant may display agonist-like behavior in the non-canonical signaling pathway of the orexin receptors, as confirm

Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS) is a rare disorder that impairs autonomic breathing control, leading to alveolar hypoventilation and sometimes to central apnoea, predominantly during sleep. Patients typically require nocturnal ventilatory support and alarms to prevent life-threatening desaturation events. However, current alarm systems integrated into pulse oximeters do not provide adequate assistance at home. To address these limitations, we developed an assistive device with customizable multisensory stimulation that activates based on the severity and duration of desatura

Cataplexy, a sudden unexpected muscle paralysis, is a debilitating symptom of the neurodegenerative sleep disorder, narcolepsy. During these attacks, the person is paralyzed, but fully conscious and aware of their surroundings. To identify potential neurons that might serve as surrogate orexin neurons to suppress such attacks, the gene for orexin (hypocretin), a peptide lost in most human narcoleptics, was delivered into the brains of the orexin-ataxin-3 transgenic mouse model of human narcolepsy. Three weeks after the recombinant adenoassociated virus (rAAV)-mediated orexin gene transfer, sle

Periodic breathing is an unusual form of breathing with oscillations in minute ventilations and with repetitive apnoeas or near apnoeas. Reported initially in patients with heart failure or stroke, it was later recognized to occur especially during sleep. The recurrent hypoxia and surges of sympathetic activity that often occur during the apnoeas have serious health consequences. Mathematical models have helped greatly in the understanding of the causes of recurrent apnoeas. It is unlikely that every instance of periodic breathing has the same cause, but many result from instability in the fee

BACKGROUND: Since its approval 26 years ago, Zolpidem has been implicated in 61 cases of complex sleep behaviours (CSBs) reported to the US FDA. These cases typically describe activities such as eating, walking, cooking or driving while asleep after Zolpidem use. This report describes a unique presentation of Zolpidem-induced CSB.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old male with recurrent depressive disorder presented with a history of waking up in a hospital with no recollection of how he was admitted. He subsequently discharged himself against medical advice. In addition to his regular treatment,
