Simple cardiovagal and adrenergic function tests in carotid artery stenosis patients as a potential tool for determining a transient autonomic dysfunction.

PURPOSE: The arterial baroreflex depends on the integrity of the afferent limb, which can be quantified using the baroreceptor's sensitivity (BRS) during the Valsalva maneuver (VM). The aim of this study was to evaluate, using autonomic nervous system tests, the autonomic function in patients after a carotid artery angioplasty (CAS). METHODS: We evaluated the changes in blood pressure (BP) during the VM (Valsalva ratio, BRS, sympathetic indexes) in 41 patients with symptomatic, unilateral, internal carotid artery stenosis. RESULTS: The Valsalva ratio between the baseline and the post-procedu

Developmental differences in the effects of alcohol and stress on heart rate variability.

Adolescent rats differ in their responses to stress and ethanol from their adult counterparts, although not much is known about the contribution of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to these differences. This study assessed the impact of stress, ethanol, and their combination on parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) in adolescent and adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals were habituated to the testing box and neck sensors (MouseOX, STARR Life Sciences Corp.) used for recording heart rate (HR). After 8-10min of baseline recording, animals were restrained for 90min or returned home, foll

Blood pressure rhythmicity and visceral fat in children with hypertension.

Primary hypertension is associated with disturbed activity of the sympathetic nervous system and altered blood pressure rhythmicity. We analyzed changes in cardiovascular rhythmicity and its relation with target organ damage during 12 months of antihypertensive treatment in 50 boys with hypertension (median, 15.0 years). The following parameters were obtained before and after 12 months of antihypertensive treatment: 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure, left ventricular mass, carotid intima-media thickness, and MRI for visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue. Amplitudes and acrophases of mean ar…

Increased salivary chromogranin A in women with severe negative mood states in the premenstrual phase.

The present study investigated whether salivary chromogranin A (CgA), a psychological stress marker associated with sympathetic nervous system activity, changes during the menstrual cycle in women with different degrees of premenstrual psychoemotional symptoms. Forty-five women (28.6 ± 1.3 years) with regular menstrual cycles participated in this study. Salivary CgA and cortisol were measured during the follicular and late-luteal phases. The authors used the Profile of Mood State (POMS) to assess current mood states of subjects in each menstrual phase and divided the subjects into three groups…

Activation of mineralocorticoid receptors in the rostral ventrolateral medulla is involved in hypertensive mechanisms in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) is recognized as a target for therapeutic intervention in hypertension and heart failure. MRs in the central nervous system are thought to have an important role in blood pressure regulation. Thus, we examined whether activation of the MR pathway in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) of the brainstem contributes to the neural mechanism of hypertension in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSPs). We microinjected eplerenone, aldosterone or Na(+)-rich artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) into the RVLM of anesthetized Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats and

Chronic effects of centrally administered adiponectin on appetite, metabolism and blood pressure regulation in normotensive and hypertensive rats.

Acute studies suggest that adiponectin may reduce sympathetic activity and blood pressure (BP) via actions on the central nervous system (CNS). However, the chronic effects of adiponectin on energy expenditure and cardiovascular function are still poorly understood. We tested if chronic intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of adiponectin (1 or 7μg/day) in Sprague-Dawley rats fed a high fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks and at the high dose (7μg/day) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), a hypertensive model associated with sympathetic overactivity, evoked chronic reductions in BP and heart rat

Selective enhancement of glutamate-mediated pressor responses after GABA(A) receptor blockade in the RVLM of sedentary versus spontaneous wheel running rats.

Overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is a hallmark of many cardiovascular diseases. It is also well-known that physical inactivity independently contributes to cardiovascular diseases, likely in part via increased SNS activity. Recent work from our laboratory has demonstrated increased SNS responses in sedentary animals following either direct activation or disinhibition of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM), an integral cardiovascular brainstem region. These data led us to hypothesize that the interaction between excitation and inhibition of the RVLM is altered in sedent…

Modulation of peripheral chemoreflex by neurohumoral adaptations after kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral chemoreceptors residing predominantly in the carotid body monitor changes in arterial blood oxygen and are mechanistically linked to the cardiorespiratory control by the autonomic nervous system. Enhanced sympathetic activation is common in end-stage renal disease and kidney transplantation has been shown to improve cardiorespiratory reflex measures of autonomic function. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to test whether improvement in renal function following kidney transplantation is related to an improvement in chemosensory function. Gastric dysmotility in healthy first-degree relatives of patients with schizophrenia.

Gastric dysmotility has been reported in patients suffering from major depression or schizophrenia. An increased sympathetic activity modulating the gastric pacemaker located in the antrum of the stomach has been suggested as the underlying pathology. Similar to patients suffering from schizophrenia, their first-degree relatives showed alterations in cardiac autonomic modulation. Here we aimed to investigate gastric myoelectrical activity in healthy relatives of patients suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. Electrogastrography (EGG) was performed before and after test meal ingestion in 20 pa

Prediction of early secondary complications in patients with spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage based on accelerated sympathovagal ratios.

PURPOSE: The development of secondary complications following spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) largely depends on sympathetic overexcitation. The roles of vagal activities, however, are poorly defined. Because both components of the autonomic nervous system can be explored in the frequency domain of heart rate variability (HRV), the present study aimed to determine the dynamic evolution of autonomic activities and to identify patients at high risk for complications following hemorrhage. METHODS: Thirty patients with SAH were enrolled in our study. Those who suffered from symptomatic

Protective effects of centrally acting sympathomodulatory drugs on myocardial ischemia induced by sympathetic overactivity in rabbits.

It is recognized that an imbalance of the autonomic nervous system is involved in the genesis of ventricular arrhythmia and sudden death during myocardial ischemia. In the present study we investigated the effects of clonidine and rilmenidine, two centrally acting sympathomodulatory drugs, on an experimental model of centrally induced sympathetic hyperactivity in pentobarbital-anesthetized New Zealand albino rabbits of either sex (2-3 kg, N = 89). We also compared the effects of clonidine and rilmenidine with those of propranolol, a beta-blocker, known to induce protective cardiovascular effec

Role of the autonomic nervous system in the mediation of LHA electrical stimulation-induced effects on insulinemia and glycemia.

The short-term effects of bilateral electrical stimulation of the lateral component of the lateral hypothalamic/medial forebrain bundle area (LHA) on peripheral plasma levels of glucose (G), immunoreactive insulin (IRI) and glucagon (IRG) were measured in food-derived, anesthetized rats in the presence of continuous low i.v. glucose infusion. In normal rats LHA stimulation induced a rapid but moderate rise in IRI in the presence of a simultaneous rapid rise in G. At the end of the 5 min stimulation period the glucose-induced IRI response was clearly attenuated. In rats receiving a continuous p

Reflex control of sympathetic outflow and depressed baroreflex sensitivity following myocardial infarction.

Reflex control of heart rate is frequently impaired following myocardial infarction. This is referred to as depressed baroreflex sensitivity. The aim of these experiments was to assess the function of other autonomic reflexes in dogs with depressed baroreflex sensitivity. Comparisons were made to dogs in whom baroreflex sensitivity was preserved or unchanged after myocardial infarction. Under chloralose-barbiturate anesthesia, reflex control of sympathetic outflow by the sinoaortic baroreceptors was determined by measurement of changes in systolic arterial pressure and efferent renal sympathet
