Magnesium deficiency: possible role in osteoporosis associated with gluten-sensitive enteropathy.

Osteoporosis and magnesium (Mg) deficiency often occur in malabsorption syndromes such as gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE). Mg deficiency is known to impair parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion and action in humans and will result in osteopenia and increased skeletal fragility in animal models. We hypothesize that Mg depletion may contribute to the osteoporosis associated with malabsorption. It was our objective to determine Mg status and bone mass in GSE patients who were clinically asymptomatic and on a stable gluten-free diet, as well as their response to Mg therapy. Twenty-three patients

Evaluation of bone mineral density in CAPD patients with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry.

In this study bone mineralization was evaluated using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), which measured regional bone mineral density [BMD (g/cm2)] at two skeletal sites, the lumbar spine and the femur, in 33 patients (15 male, 18 female) undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) with no history of chronic disease or medications affecting bone. The biochemical profile included measurements of plasma levels of calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH). We did not find any statistically significant difference or correlation between B

Changes in urinary deoxypyridinoline level and vertebral bone mass in the development of adjuvant-induced arthritis in rats.

This study was designed to determine the effect of bone resorption on the development of generalized osteopenia in adjuvant-induced arthritic rats. Thirty of a total of sixty male SD rats, 6 weeks of age, were injected with killed mycobacterium butyricum suspended in mineral oil into the right hind paw and assigned to six groups of 5 animals each. The other thirty animals served as the age-matched noninjected controls. Animals were sacrificed at 4, 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28 days post-injection after measuring the bilateral hind-paw volumes. Twenty-four-hour urinary samples were obtained before sac

Skeletal health in adolescents with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes: results from a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Poorly controlled type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been associated with impaired bone health, but the mechanisms remain unclear. We aimed to investigate whether changes in glycemic control and glucose variability are associated with skeletal health and to evaluate the roles of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) in bone mineral accrual. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This longitudinal study included adolescents with poorly controlled T1D (HbA1c >9%/75 mmol/mol), who underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at baseline and after 12 month

Patients with periprosthetic femoral fractures are older adults who are commonly diagnosed with osteoporosis.

UNLABELLED: This study focused on individuals aged ≥ 50 years with periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFF). When compared to those with native hip fractures, patients with PFF were older, had a higher BMI, and demonstrated a greater number of comorbidities. Given the high frequency of osteoporosis risk factors and the BMD results, PFF should be classified as osteoporotic fractures. INTRODUCTION: To compare patients presenting with periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFF) to patients with native hip fractures with a special focus on bone mineral density (BMD) measurements, in order to reinforce t

The impact of protein diet on bone density in people with/without chronic kidney disease: An analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database.

INTRODUCTION: High protein diet is essential for the healthy state of bones. Low protein diet is often recommended to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Risk factors for femoral neck fractures are clear, but trochanteric and intertrochanteric fractures may have different risk factors. In this study, we determined the association between bone density at different femoral areas and a number of protein diets in patients with and without CKD. METHODS: We extracted information from the database of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2005-2010. We have basic vari

Degraded microarchitecture by low trabecular bone score is associated with prevalent vertebral fractures in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

PURPOSE: Recently, trabecular bone score (TBS) has emerged as an important supplementary assessment tool in osteoporosis diagnosis and management. The high incidence of fragility fracture within the non-osteoporotic range of bone mineral density (BMD), among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, highlights the crucial role of bone microarchitecture in osteoporosis. This study aimed to evaluate whether TBS identified existing vertebral fractures (VF) more accurately than BMD in SLE patients. METHODS: This study enrolled 147 SLE patients from the Asia Pacific Lupus Collaboration (APLC) c

Nutritional Status and Bone Microarchitecture in a Cohort of Systemic Sclerosis Patients.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disease characterized by initial microvascular damage, immune system activation and progressive fibrosis with insufficiency of internal organs. Gastrointestinal (GI) involvement is characterized by atrophy of the smooth muscle and small bowel hypomotility, mainly resulting from an autonomic nerve dysfunction. These modifications significantly affect gut transit and nutrient absorption, thus leading to malnutrition deficit induced by malabsorption. Nutritional deficit induced by malabsorption might also lead to bone alterations. This study aims to

Inverse association of fat mass, but not lean mass, with glycated albumin in hemodialysis patients with or without diabetes mellitus.

Background: Glycated albumin (GA), which is independent of anemia and/or use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, might provide a more precise measure than glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in hemodialysis patients. The present study examines whether body composition is associated with GA besides glycemic control in hemodialysis patients. Methods: This study included 90 hemodialysis patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and 86 hemodialysis patients without DM. We examined blood parameters after an overnight fast and body fat and lean mass using dual X-ray absorptiometry 21-24 h after completing the

Association between Inflammatory Potential of Diet and Bone-Mineral Density in Korean Postmenopausal Women: Data from Fourth and Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys.

Post menopause is considered a critical period for bone-mass loss. Impaired bone metabolism during this phase can increase the risk of fractures in old age. Inflammation is a risk factor for bone health, and diet is a potential source of inflammation. However, few studies have examined the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and bone-mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women in Korea. The objective of this study was to determine, by means of a Korean cross-sectional investigation, whether higher DII scores are associated with decreased BMD in postmenopausal women. To

Chronic kidney disease and obesity bias surrogate estimates of insulin sensitivity compared with the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp.

Insulin sensitivity can be measured by procedures such as the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp or by using surrogate indices. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and obesity may differentially affect these measurements because of changes in insulin kinetics and organ-specific effects on insulin sensitivity. In a cross-sectional study of 59 subjects with nondiabetic CKD [estimated glomerular filtration rate: (GFR) <60 ml·min-1·1.73 m2] and 39 matched healthy controls, we quantified insulin sensitivity by clamp (SIclamp), oral glucose tolerance test, and fasting glucose and insulin. We compared surrog
