OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the association between screen time and cognitive function and examines whether putamen volume, which decreases with increased screen time, mediates this relationship.
METHODS: Using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study of nearly 10,000 children aged 9-10 years, screen time was assessed through self-report questionnaires, and cognitive function-including working memory, processing speed, language, executive function, and episodic memory-was ƒmeasured using the National Institutes of Health toolbox. Linear mixed-effects models were used

Child marriage continues to be a deeply rooted tradition in some urban Indian communities, such as Sowcarpet, where cultural conventions, economic vulnerability, and patriarchal norms combine to normalize the early marriage of girls between 12 and 18 years of age. This qualitative study employs a descriptive phenomenological approach to analyze the emotional and psychological consequences of child marriage among eight adolescent brides, using snowball sampling and detailed oral accounts to examine child marriage as a form of sexual and psychological abuse. The analysis identifies five key them

The development of regionally tailored healthcare goals and targets shared by all stakeholders is essential for a high-quality healthcare system. This study outlines the development of a generic framework for creating patient-centered, cross-sectoral healthcare targets, applying a multi-stage, hybrid Delphi process and using Saxony, Germany as an example. The process involved key stakeholders, including policymakers, healthcare providers, and patient representatives, and focused on two use cases: child and adolescent health and dementia. Through expert interviews, online surveys, and workshops

Parents' internalizing symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, may contribute to similar symptoms in their youth. However, these associations vary, as youth with better emotion regulation may be more protected from negative parental influence. Yet, it remains unclear how youth's neural correlates of emotion regulation, particularly in prefrontal regions-such as dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC), and medial orbitofrontal cortex (mOFC)-play a role in these associations. To address this gap, this study used two-wave longitudinal data that spanned 2 yr f

Deep learning algorithms for predicting neuroimaging data have shown considerable promise in various applications. Prior work has demonstrated that deep learning models that take advantage of the data's 3D structure can outperform standard machine learning on several learning tasks. However, most prior research in this area has focused on neuroimaging data from adults. Within the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) dataset, a large longitudinal development study, we examine structural MRI data to predict gender and identify gender-related changes in brain structure. Results demon

The development of substance abuse in youth with asthma have seldom been examined with longitudinal research. The prospective and well-characterized CAMP cohort provides outcome data on youth with asthma over 13 years. This manuscript seeks to determine the contributions of asthma features and child behavioral/emotional functioning to subsequent tobacco, alcohol, and drug use in early adulthood. Childhood smoking exposures as well as parent report and youth report of substance use were prospectively assessed concurrently with assessments of asthma symptoms, study medication, and lung developme

Parental warmth and hostility are two key dimensions of parenting for child development, but the differential effects of these parenting dimensions on child prosocial and antisocial development has not been adequately investigated. The current study hypothesized that parental warmth would be uniquely related to child callous-unemotional traits and prosocial behavior, whereas parental hostility would be uniquely related to child delinquency and aggression. These hypotheses were investigated in a diverse sample of 1,216 adolescent males (13 to 17 years old, 46% Latino, 37% Black) with justice-sy

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of adolescent obesity has increased dramatically, becoming a serious public health concern. While previous evidence suggests that in utero- and early postnatal overnutrition increases adult-onset obesity risk, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this outcome are not well understood. Non-neuronal cells play an underestimated role in the physiological responses to metabolic/nutrient signals. Hypothalamic glial-mediated inflammation is now considered a contributing factor in the development and perpetuation of obesity; however, attention on the role of gliosis and

The central idea of evolutionary psychology theory (EPT) is that species evolve to carry or exhibit certain traits/behaviors because these characteristics increase their ability to survive and reproduce. Proponents of EPT propose that bullying emerges from evolutionary development, providing an adaptive edge for gaining better sexual opportunities and physical protection, and promoting mental health. This study examines adolescent bullying behaviors via the lens of EPT. Questionnaires were administered to 135 adolescents, ages 13 to 16, from one secondary school in metro Vancouver, British Col

Research is needed to determine whether early intervention to decrease elevated depressive symptoms in youth ameliorates later development of insulin resistance and lessens the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Early life stress (child and adolescent abuse, neglect and trauma) induces robust alterations in emotional and social functioning resulting in enhanced risk for the development of psychopathologies such as mood and aggressive disorders. Here, an overview is given on recent findings in primate and rodent models of early life stress, demonstrating that chronic deprivation of early maternal care as well as chronic deprivation of early physical interactions with peers are profound risk factors for the development of inappropriate aggressive behaviors. Alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adre

The purpose of this study was to evaluate hard palate asymmetry during development. The palates of 248 dry skulls were photographed and evaluated digitally. The skulls were divided into seven groups: fetus, newborn, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and aged. Linear measures were obtained from great palatine foramen (GPF) to incisive fossa (INC) and to posterior nasal spine (PNS). Angular measures were obtained from the former landmarks plus the point on sutures intersection between maxillary and palatine bones. Asymmetry was evaluated intra and intergroups. All skulls showed some degree of ri

Experimentation with alcohol and other drugs is often seen as a normal part of adolescent development. The harm associated with substance misuse in young people include injury, violent behaviour, sexual risk taking, drink-driving, overdose, toxicity and death (1-4). Australian young people are drinking alcohol and using illicit substances at an earlier age than previous cohorts (5). hey are more likely to binge drink, have poly-substance use and are at risk of co-morbid mental health problems (1-3). The reasons young people use drugs are complex and varied. An effective response to illicit dru…

This study examined the effects of the vertically activated bite block, a new appliance designed for maxillary molar intrusion in open bite malocclusion, on the dentofacial structures in 1 adolescent patient and 1 adult patient. The vertically activated bite block consists of 2 parts, the main block and an auxiliary segment. The auxilliary segment is separated bilaterally from the main block in the posterior region and connected bilaterally to the main block in the palatal region by open jackscrews. Closing the jackscrews moves the auxiliary segment toward the palate, thereby inducing molar in

After some general remarks on the current situation of child and adolescent psychiatric research in Germany, a research concept is presented which in the course of 30 years of testing and further development has proven to be successful both in the inauguration of scientific projects, as well as in the qualification of trainees and co-workers. The nucleus of this concept is a research unit that is to a large extent independent of the daily health care routine. Some of the unit staff members are natural scientists holding permanent positions, complemented by a secondary labour force of young doc

The prevalence of ovarian hyperandrogenism, hyperinsulinism and dyslipidemia is increased among adolescent girls with a history of premature pubarche (defined as the appearance of pubic hair before the age of 8 yr). The ovarian hyperandrogenism is characterized by clinical signs of androgen excess and by an exaggerated ovarian 17-hydroxyprogesterone response to GnRH agonist stimulation. The hyperinsulinism and dyslipidemia are detectable before and during pubertal development, and are commonly accompanied by low serum levels of insulin-like growth factor binding-protein 1 (IGFBP-1) and sex hor

The nipple and areola diameter of 498 girls aged 8-17 years were studied with the aim of finding measurable criteria for sexual maturation, including breast and pubic hair development during female puberty. All measurements were made holding a transparent ruler on both sides by the same observer. The smaller of the two measurements was used in the analysis. Significantly nipple and areola development occurred between breast stages B1 (2.56 and 14.35 mm), B2 (3.32 and 20.26 mm), B3 (5.21 and 28.84 mm), and B4 (6.28 and 32.03 mm). The nipple and areola diameter were also significantly greater in

Community-based prospective studies are needed to shed light on mechanisms that may influence development of eating disorders and identify variables that could serve as potential targets for prevention efforts. In this paper we examine level of weight preoccupation and other variables prospectively associated with age of onset of eating disorder symptoms over a 3-year interval in a community sample (N = 939) of young adolescent girls. 3.6% (32/887) experienced onset of symptoms over the interval. Only one factor, a measure of Weight Concerns, was significantly associated with onset (p < .001).

Erik Erikson's theoretical writings on identity have provided a rich foundation upon which decades of research on identity development have been built. However, literature is lacking regarding adolescents who are aware that they lack knowledge about the self (i.e., values, likes, and dislikes) to the extent that they are stuck and directionless, and therefore unable to engage in the process of identity formation, what we refer to as a state of "lostness." Furthermore, while it has been established that supportive relationships facilitate identity development, less is known about whether variou
