The myriad of applications of indium-111 labeled platelets (111In-P), both in biomedical research and clinical diagnostic imaging, in recent years is an index of the potential of this technology. Because many diseases involve the vascular system, a nontoxic platelet label suitable for imaging has immense potential for diagnosis. Presently confined to research centers, this technique is currently used in three main diagnostic situations: deep vein thrombosis, cardiac thrombi, and organ (renal) transplantation rejection. Future applications will proliferate when difficulties in achieving rapid l…

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosing invasive cutaneous melanoma (CM) can be challenging due to subjectivity in distinguishing equivocal nevi, melanoma in situ and thin CMs. The underlying molecular mechanisms of progression from nevus to melanoma must be better understood. Identifying biomarkers for treatment response, diagnostics and prognostics is crucial. Using biomedical data from biobanks and population-based healthcare data, translational research can improve patient care by implementing evidence-based findings. The BioMEL biobank is a prospective, multicentre, large-scale biomedical database on eq

The combination of loss of habitat, human population encroachment, and increased demand of select nonhuman primates for biomedical research has significantly affected populations. There remains a need for knowledge and expertise in understanding background findings as related to the age, source, strain, and disease status of nonhuman primates. In particular, for safety/biomedical studies, a broader understanding and documentation of lesions would help clarify background from drug-related findings. A workshop and a minisymposium on spontaneous lesions and diseases in nonhuman primates were spon…

The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is an outdated biomedical metric that hinders knowledge dissemination. Relying on citation counts creates a skewed, easily manipulated system with a temporal lag that ignores global equity. Frontline clinicians consume research to improve care but rarely generate citations, meaning the JIF cannot capture real-world clinical utility. To ensure rankings reflect true value, publishers must adopt a multi-dimensional matrix prioritizing usage-based Altmetrics, such as verified downloads and views, to instantly measure global clinical application.

The aim of this paper is to present a concise account of the history, mission, structure and some recent achievements of the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Created by the US Congress 40 years ago, the NIAAA has evolved from an entity charged mainly with building a national system of alcoholism treatment services to one with responsibility for developing, nurturing and supporting the biomedical and behavioral science foundation necessary to reduce the significant domestic and global public health impact of alcohol use disorders. The NIAAA is unique in that it fun

Holographic imaging in microscopy enables label-free quantitative information of biological specimens and has found applications across a wide range of biomedical studies, from cell morphology to particle dynamics; yet its widespread adoption is often limited by the lack of accessible and standardized analysis software. We present HoloBio, an open-source, Python-based graphical user interface developed to address this issue. This software offers two primary operational modes: a Real-Time mode that enables live processing of holograms at video frame rates, and an Offline mode designed for post-

Indocyanine green (ICG) is a small molecule approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for liver function imaging and angiography. ICG can be used not only for near-infrared imaging but also for photodynamic and photothermal therapy. However, the hydrophilicity of ICG leads to a relatively short blood circulation time, and it is easily cleared by organs such as the liver. Moreover, it lacks the targeting ability to the diseased sites. By using the natural porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the carrier, high-efficiency loading of ICG molecule can be achieved, which has signi

In rural Costa Rica, lay people conceptualize iron deficiency anemia differently from health care providers, and these differences impede public health initiatives. This research is based on 70 ethnographic interviews with mothers of young children 24-48 months of age and interviews with health care personnel in eight rural neighborhoods. Lay explanations of anemia draw on biomedical concepts, such as the amount of iron in the blood or in food, but one common explanation is elaborated to involve a biomedical life-threatening disease, leukemia, in cases where the anemia is not treated. Furtherm

Pigs are extensively used for biomedical research as animal models given their similarities to humans including size, arterial capacity, and cutaneous structure. While their size also allows for the use of clinically available anesthesia equipment (for example, endotracheal tubes and ventilators), anecdotes exist with respect to stress reactions after exposure to volatile anesthetics. Over 3 mo at our institution, 11 pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) exposed to isoflurane anesthesia during 2 research protocols were euthanized after exhibiting clinical signs of malignant hyperthermia, including hype…

Alzheimer's disease (AD), an age-related neurodegenerative disease, brings huge damage to the society, to the whole family and even to the patient himself. However, until now, the etiological factor of AD is still unknown and there is no effective treatment for it. Massive deposition of amyloid-beta peptide(Aβ) and hyperphosphorylation of Tau proteins are acknowledged pathological features of AD. Recent studies have revealed that neuroinflammation plays a pivotal role in the pathology of AD. With the rise of nanomaterials in the biomedical field, researchers are exploring how the unique proper

Rodents used in biomedical research are typically reared in small cages that lack key features of their natural habitats. These conditions impose constraints on behaviour and brain development, resulting in altered brain functions. In this article, evidence for three different ways in which barren housing conditions interfere with brain development and behaviour is reviewed. Early environmental deprivation, thwarting of behavioral response rules, and disruption of habitat-dependent adaptation processes are shown to result in aberrant or maladaptive brain functions. Current standard housing con…

BACKGROUND: The hepatitis C virus (HCV) affects approximately 214,000 Canadians. While the availability of safe, effective direct-acting antivirals (DAA) has led to decreased rates of chronic HCV infection and increased treatment uptake, major challenges to achieving HCV elimination remain. This report summarizes key findings from the 14th Canadian Symposium on Hepatitis C Virus, which focused on advancing equitable strategies for HCV elimination through multidisciplinary dialogue.
METHODS: The symposium was titled "From Research Breakthroughs to Equitable Healthcare for Priority Populations,

Far too much biomedical research is wasted and ends in the so called "Valley of Death": the gap that exists between biomedical research and its clinical application. While the translational process requires collaboration between many disciplines, current translational medicine focuses on single disciplines. Therefore, educational pathways that integrate clinical and research skills in interdisciplinary and interprofessional contexts are needed. The Eureka institute (http://www.eurekainstitute.org/) was founded to address these issues. The institute organizes an annual 1-week international cert…

Nanomedicine is promising to improve conventional cancer medicine by making diagnosis and therapy more accurate and more effective in a more personalized manner. A key of the cancer nanomedicine is construction of medical nanodevices by programming various requisite functions to nanoparticles (NPs). As compared to that of soft NPs, including organic micelles and polymers, fabrication of an inorganic NP based nanodevice is still challenging; the approved nanoformulations have been confined to the limited number of superparamagnetic iron oxide NPs (SPIONs). The major challenges lie in how to pro
