A randomised, prospective trial to evaluate Surgicel Nu-knit with Vasolene ribbon gauze and Merocel packs, respectively. We studied the expression of Mac-1 on granulocytes (flow cytometry) from 9 patients (27 examinations) during hemodialysis with cuprophane membranes (CuM). Samples were drawn before dialysis and from the arterial and venous lines at 5, 15 and 180 min. Granulocytopenia was most pronounced after 15 min of treatment. Erythrocyte pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency was first described in Basenjis 20 years ago. Although the approach to diagnosis had not been well established, a screening program to detect heterozygotes was thought to have eliminated PK deficiency from the Basenjis of the United States. Four not closely related Basenjis with severe chronic hemolytic anemia, from various parts of the United States, were studied. Their PCV ranged from 16 to 25% and their reticulocyte count was always above 15%. A progressive osteosclerosis was seen in all of the Basenjis and hepatic failure developed in 2 of them.

Plasma samples from heifers infected with Trypanosoma congolense were shown to contain a parasite peptidase. In some instances, trypanosome peptidase was detected in plasma samples taken from heifers for up to 14 days after infections had been successfully treated with diminazene aceturate (Berenil). We describe five cases of severe alpha 1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency to illustrate the importance of visual inspection of electrophoretic patterns of serum proteins. In four patients the diagnosis of AAT deficiency was clinically unsuspected; in the other patient, the electrophoretic pattern was the first clue to confirm the diagnosis. Densitometric scanning of these patterns invariably overestimated the concentration of alpha 1-globulin. By visually inspecting electrophoretic strips instead of relying on densitometry, clinical chemists can help detect AAT deficiency earlier.

Attempts to gain greater understanding of characteristics of catalytic site properties of two homologous lysosomal cysteine proteinases, cathepsins B and H, were made by using sodium salicylate (SA) and several specific inhibitors, which extends the studies on the structure-activity relationship and kinetics for the activation of cathepsin B by SA in the previous paper (Yamamoto, K., Takeda, M. and Kato, Y.: Japan. Previous reports have suggested that creatine kinase isoenzymes are elevated in patients with chronic renal failure and thus are less useful in the evaluation of chest pain in such patients. A blocking factor (BF) was obtained from normal and rat reaginic serum which inhibited the passive cutaneous anaphylactic (PCA) reaction of mouse and rat IgE in rat skin. Several chromatographic procedures on DEAE- and CM-cellulose at various pH values were compared in an attempt to obtain BF with high activity. Two adults with beta-galactosidase deficiency were studied. Differences in a number of beta-galactosidase parameters (pH optima, heat denaturation, NaCl kinetics) were noted between the patients. Differences were also noted in beta-galactosidase electrophoretic mobilities and urinary oligosaccharides; however, there was no complementation in cell fusion studies. It is suggested that these two patients have different primary mutations at the beta-galactosidase locus which are probably structural in nature.

When nine diabetic patients supplemented either their normal home diets (four patients) or metabolic ward diets (five patients) with 25 g guar gum daily for 5 or 7 days their mean urinary glucose excretion fell by 46% (P less than 0-05) and 54% (P less than 0-01), respectively. Gel-forming,, unabsorbable carbohydrate may therefore be a useful adjunct to anti-diabetic therapy, irrespective of the type of treatment or insulin dosage used.

They were determined from the simultaneous recording of an ECG, a phonocardiogram, and arterial pulse tracings. In this paper the specificity of the skin-reactive guinea-pig immunoglobulin in the homologous PCA test has been reconsidered. Extensive purification of this immunoglobulin by chromatographic methods results in the isolation of a small fraction of medium speed immunoglobulins that contains all skin reactivity. The failure of human serum to give rise to anaphylatoxin activity could be attributed to the presence of a potent inactivator of anaphylatoxin in human serum. The inactivator was isolated and characterized as an alpha-globulin with a molecular weight of approximately 310,000.
