BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma of the uveal tract is a rare malignancy but a significant cause of mortality and visual loss. In peripheral nerves, ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) is localized to a subset of Schwann cells and is decreased in synthesis during Wallerian degeneration. This pattern of expression is similar to that of myelin protein genes. When radial cortical opacities occurred in the lenses of glaucomatous eyes, ocular hypertension soon became normal. Glaucoma operations were not performed on patients over 50 years of age, and medical control or simple lens extraction was adopted. Intravitreal injections of cholera or pertussis toxin (CTX or PTX, 0.5-1 microgram/eye) decreased intraocular pressure (IOP) up to 50% in the albino rabbit eye, which lasted up to six days.
