Efficacy in myopia control-The impact of rebound.

PURPOSE: When myopia control treatment is discontinued, progression will increase, but does it revert to expected values based on the age and race of the child or does it accelerate further? The latter scenario is considered a rebound. METHODS: A PubMed search was conducted with the words 'rebound' and 'myopia control', identifying further papers from reviews. Inclusion was limited to prospective studies with ≥6 months of treatment, ≥3 months of data following cessation and with axial length data, which allowed calculation of rebound. Nineteen studies were identified, comprising 24 treatment

Dual-Task Gait as a Predictive Tool for Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults: A Systematic Review.

The use of the dual-task model as a cognitive-motor interface has been extensively investigated in cross-sectional studies as a training task in cognitive impairment. However, few existing longitudinal studies prove the usefulness of this tool as a clinical marker of cognitive impairment in older people. What is the evidence in prospective studies about dual-task gait as a predictor of cognitive impairment in older adults? This study aims to review and discuss the current state of knowledge in prospective studies on the use of dual-task gait as a predictive tool for cognitive impairment in old

Prevalence and risk factors of latent tuberculosis infection in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) remains a major public health problem and one of the major contributors to the pool of active tuberculosis cases. The true burden of LTBI in Africa is not known. Early modelling studies estimate that over 33% of the world's population is infected with latent tuberculosis. We propose conducting a systematic review and a meta-analysis to evaluate the burden and risk factors of LTBI in Africa reported in studies from 2000 to 2017. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will include cross-sectional studies, cohort studies and case-control studies estimating ei

The Complexity of Skeletal Transverse Dimension: From Diagnosis, Management, and Treatment Strategies to the Application of Collaborative Cross (CC) Mouse Model.

This study investigates the significance of skeletal transverse dimension (STD) in orthodontic therapy and its impact on occlusal relationships. The primary goal is to enhance understanding and promote the integration of transverse skeletal diagnostics into routine orthodontic assessments. To achieve this aim, the study employs a comprehensive approach, utilizing model analysis, clinical assessments, radiographic measurements, and occlusograms. The initial step involves a meticulous assessment of deficiencies in the maxilla, mainly focusing on transverse dimension issues. Various successful di

Phenology-aware collaborative retrieval of structural and physiological cotton traits from Sentinel-2 imagery using multi-task learning.

Cotton leaf area index (LAI) and SPAD values characterize canopy structure and relative leaf chlorophyll status, respectively; however, most existing remote-sensing studies retrieve these two traits independently and pay limited attention to phenology-driven changes in their shared and target-specific spectral information. Using synchronous LAI and SPAD measurements collected from 109 sampling sites over eight observation periods in 2021, together with Sentinel-2 imagery, this study developed a phenology-dependent framework for the collaborative retrieval of LAI and SPAD. The maximal informati

A Preventive Behavior Questionnaire for Older Workers in Brazil: Protocol for a Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Population aging is rapidly reshaping the Brazilian labor force, increasing the participation of adults aged 50 years and older and intensifying the need for safe, inclusive, and age‑friendly workplaces. Preventive behaviors at work play a vital role in protecting workers' physical, social, and psychological health; however, no validated Brazilian Portuguese instrument is currently available to measure the frequency of these behaviors. The Preventive Behaviors at Work Frequency Scale (Échelle de Fréquence des Comportements Préventifs au Travail), developed in Canada, evaluates how

Implementing guidelines and training initiatives to improve cross-cultural communication in primary care consultations: a qualitative participatory European study.

BACKGROUND: Cross-cultural communication in primary care is often difficult, leading to unsatisfactory, substandard care. Supportive evidence-based guidelines and training initiatives (G/TIs) exist to enhance cross cultural communication but their use in practice is sporadic. The objective of this paper is to elucidate how migrants and other stakeholders can adapt, introduce and evaluate such G/TIs in daily clinical practice. METHODS: We undertook linked qualitative case studies to implement G/TIs focused on enhancing cross cultural communication in primary care, in five European countries. W

An investigation of flavivirus infections of cattle in Zimbabwe Rhodesia with particular reference to Wesselsbron virus.

A three-part epidemiological investigation was made on flaviviruses:1. As a preliminary to tests on cattle sera from the field, the antigenic cross-reactivity of Wesselsbron, Spondweni, Usutu, Banzi, West Nile and yellow fever flaviviruses was studied in antisera prepared in guinea pigs. As described earlier for flaviviruses, sera were found to be highly cross-reactive in haemagglutination-inhibition (HAI) tests, less cross-reactive in complement-fixation (CF) tests and were virtually monospecific in microneutralization (NT) tests in Vero cell cultures.2. Infection with Wesselsbron (WSL) virus

Case Report: Case study of 100 consecutive IRONMAN®-distance triathlons-impact of race splits and sleep on the performance of an elite athlete.

BACKGROUND: Long-distance triathletes such as IRONMAN® and ultra-triathletes competing in longer race distances continue to extend ultra-endurance limits. While the performance of 60 IRONMAN®-distance triathlons in 60 days was the longest described to date, we analysed in the present case study the impact of split disciplines and recovery in one athlete completing 100 IRONMAN®-distance triathlons in 100 days. To date, this is the longest self-paced world record attempt for most daily IRONMAN®-distance triathlons. METHODS: To assess the influence of each activity's duration on the total time,

Treatment approaches for Scheuermann kyphosis: a systematic review of historic and current management.

OBJECTIVE: Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) is an idiopathic kyphosis characterized by anterior wedging of ≥ 5° at 3 contiguous vertebrae managed with either nonoperative or operative treatment. Nonoperative treatment typically employs bracing, while operative treatment is performed with either a combined anterior-posterior fusion or posterior-only approach. Current evidence for these approaches has largely been derived from retrospective case series or focused reviews. Consequently, no consensus exists regarding optimal management strategies for patients afflicted with this condition. In this study,

Safety and preliminary efficacy of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSC) for painful lumbar facet arthropathy: study protocol for a randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover phase II clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar facet arthropathy (LFA) is a degenerative, arthritic joint disorder and a common specific cause of axial low back pain and functional impairment. Currently, no disease-modifying therapies are available for symptomatic LFA. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cell (MSC)-based therapy represents an emerging regenerative treatment modality with the promise to target the underlying pathophysiology of LFA. Despite encouraging clinical evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of MSC therapy in other osteoarthritis, its therapeutic utility in LFA remains largely unexplored. We recently com

Patterns of Care Following Procedural Intervention Among Women With Overactive Bladder.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Procedural therapies for overactive bladder (OAB) most often include intradetrusor onabotulinumtoxinA (BTX) injections, sacral neuromodulation (SNM), and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS). Despite their proven efficacy, real-world data on therapy continuation and crossover rates between these modalities remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate longitudinal patterns of treatment continuation and therapy crossover among women receiving procedural OAB treatments. METHODS: We conducted a multi-institutional retrospective cohort study of women with idiopa

Innervation of the anal canal revisited through micro-CT imaging.

Studies in anatomy are frequently performed through dissection and histology as investigative methods. These techniques are, however, destructive and struggle to capture the peripheral nerves over larger areas, such as the pelvis, and their trajectories thus remain elusive. This study aimed to explore the capabilities of non-destructive micro-CT in identifying small nerves in the periphery of the pelvic area and map them in human fetal development. Six human fetal pelvic samples were derived from the Dutch Fetal Biobank; samples were contrast enhanced with B-Lugol and scanned through micro-CT

Vaccines for preventing influenza in people with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Influenza vaccination is recommended for asthmatic patients in many countries as observational studies have shown that influenza infection can be associated with asthma exacerbations. However, influenza vaccination has the potential to cause wheezing and adversely affect pulmonary function. While an overview concluded that there was no clear benefit of influenza vaccination in patients with asthma, this conclusion was not based on a systematic search of the literature. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the efficacy and safety of influenza vaccination in childr
