Temporal coding of reward-guided choice in the posterior parietal cortex.

Making a decision involves computations across distributed cortical and subcortical networks. How such distributed processing is performed remains unclear. We test how the encoding of choice in a key decision-making node, the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), depends on the temporal structure of the surrounding population activity. We recorded spiking and local field potential (LFP) activity in the PPC while two rhesus macaques performed a decision-making task. We quantified the mutual information that neurons carried about an upcoming choice and its dependence on LFP activity. The spiking of P

DHGT-DTI: Advancing drug-target interaction prediction through a dual-view heterogeneous network with GraphSAGE and Graph Transformer.

Computational approaches for predicting drug-target interactions (DTIs) are pivotal in advancing drug discovery. Current methodologies leveraging heterogeneous networks often fall short in fully integrating both local and global network information. To comprehensively consider network information, we propose DHGT-DTI, a novel deep learning-based approach for DTI prediction. Specifically, we capture the local and global structural information of the network from both neighborhood and meta-path perspectives. In the neighborhood perspective, we employ a heterogeneous graph neural network (HGNN),

Cortical Hierarchy Collapse in Alzheimer's Disease: Connectome Gradient Compression as a Potential Biomarker.

This investigation centered on Alzheimer's disease (AD), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory impairment and cognitive decline. Functional connectome gradient analysis was utilized to investigate alterations in the hierarchical architecture of brain networks in AD. The study cohort consisted of 222 subjects, encompassing 111 AD patients and 111 normal controls (NC). Connectome gradients were computed via a dimensionality reduction technique based on diffusion map embedding and analyzed at both the region of interest (ROI) and network levels. Additional connectome gr

Deep learning for developmental dysplasia of the hip: comparative classification strategies for ultrasound imaging with heterogeneous image quality.

Computer-assisted diagnostic tools may help improve the consistency and reliability of ultrasonographic screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). This study aimed to compare preprocessing strategies for convolutional neural network (CNN)-based classification of infant hip ultrasound images under heterogeneous image quality conditions. We evaluated six approaches for classifying infant hip ultrasound images as normal or abnormal: original-image CNN classification, CycleGAN-based domain translation in two directions, DeepLabV3-Plus-based segmentation preprocessing, and two combined

Analysis of B-Scan Ultrasonography Using Neural Networks to Predict Risk of Fibrosis in Patients With Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD).

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) continues to rise, underscoring the need for tools to stratify individual risk of disease progression. We evaluated whether logistic regression models augmented by deep learning-based predictions (DLPs) can improve the B-mode ultrasound-based identification of at-risk MASLD, defined as patients with increased fibrosis risk. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 205 patients with a total of 636 ultrasound images. We developed a model that reproduces the LSM-based dichotomous fibrosis risk classificatio

Efficient deep learning models for oral squamous cell carcinoma classification in histopathological images.

Recent advances in deep learning have significantly improved the accuracy and efficiency of disease classification in digital pathology. Early diagnosis and precise classification of histopathological images are crucial for enabling timely treatment and improving therapeutic outcomes. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most common malignancies in the oral cavity, with manual histopathological examination serving as the gold standard for diagnosis-though it is time-consuming and subject to observer variability. This study investigates the performance of four deep learning convolu

A multi-view DTI feature fusion framework for enhanced diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is widely used to detect brain alterations for diagnosis, but most methods rely on single-scale information. Therefore, this study proposes the multi-view feature learning framework incorporating residual block-based 3D convolutional neural network (3D-CNN) for AD diagnosis. First, tract-based spatial statistics were applied to extract voxel-based features from fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) maps. Second, the residual block-based 3D-CNN model was employed to extract high

Deep Learning-based Classification of Apical Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy using Left Ventricular Opacification and Enhanced LV Apex Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate classification of apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (ApHCM) subtypes is challenging due to morphological variability and overlapping phenotypes. Conventional echocardiography provides limited visualization of the apex. Artifacts induced during left ventricular opacification (LVO) complicate diagnostic interpretation. A deep learning-based framework enhances image quality and improves subtype classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this work, a deep learning-based framework is used for ApHCM subtype classification. Apical four-chamber end-diastolic frames from 3,200 i

Continuous Cuffless Blood Pressure Estimation Using a Multimodal Conv1D-LSTM Architecture and the SOUNDI® Wearable Device.

Arterial blood pressure (BP) is a crucial physiological parameter reflecting cardiovascular function and exhibiting dynamic oscillations in response to physiological, psychological, and environmental changes. Since conventional cuff-based measurements provide only intermittent "snapshot" readings, there is growing interest in reliable cuffless and noninvasive systems capable of capturing BP dynamics over time. This work proposes a continuous cuffless BP estimation system based on SOUNDI®, a proprietary wearable device for multimodal physiological and environmental monitoring developed by Biocu

Deep learning for early detection of cerebral small vessel disease using self-supervised graph embeddings and retinal image analysis.

The primary driver or cause of cognitive decline and stroke is Cerebral Small Vessel Disease (CSVD), which currently requires neuroimaging tests, which are expensive to obtain and inaccessible in standard clinical settings. Low-cost retinal imaging techniques offer non-invasive assessments that mirror the condition of the brain’s small blood vessels (cerebral microvasculature). State-of-the-art diagnostic methods currently have no accessible, non-invasive, or cost-effective solution to identify CSVD at its earliest stages through visual assessment of retinal biomarkers. This study presents the

CT-based habitat analysis combined with multi-channel deep learning for predicting early recurrence after pancreatic cancer resection: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has a poor prognosis, with high early recurrence rates after curative resection. Current prediction methods, based on clinicopathological features or conventional radiomics, often fail to capture intratumoral heterogeneity (ITH), a key driver of recurrence. Computed tomography (CT)-based habitat analysis quantifies ITH by identifying phenotypically distinct tumor subregions, while deep learning (DL) can extract complex imaging patterns. Their integration may improve recurrence risk assessment. This study aimed to develop and validate a fusion

A graph deep learning method for diagnosis of Parkinson's disease using brain functional connectivity features.

Early and precise identification of Parkinson's disease (PD) is crucial for clinical intervention. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) provides a valuable approach for revealing PD-related differences in brain functional connectivity (FC). However, existing methods often focus solely on characterizing the spatial topology of FC while neglecting its time-varying dynamic fluctuations. Furthermore, they frequently exhibit limited generalization capability when dealing with small sample sizes, and their decision-making mechanisms lack interpretability. To address these li

Lightweight CNN recognition of HeLa cell PCNA‑based S‑phase subphases and RFC‑dependent dynamics.

Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) forms subnuclear replication patterns that report S‑phase progression with a single marker and provide an imaging readout of the replication factor C (RFC)‑PCNA axis. We benchmarked lightweight convolutional neural networks for classifying fixed HeLa cell PCNA images as G1, early S, mid S, or late S, and then applied the best‑performing model to live‑cell RFC control and RFC‑del datasets. MobileNetV2 provided the best balance of accuracy and inference cost in the fixed‑cell benchmark. In live‑cell traces, RFC‑del cells showed prolonged late S‑like PCNA

Cascade Semantic Segmentation by a Convolutional Neural Network in Combination with Image Super-Euclidean Pixels Processing for SARS-CoV-2 Microscopy Images.

Although SARS-CoV-2 has been extensively studied from clinical, virological, and diagnostic perspectives, the problem of accurate automatic semantic segmentation of SARS-CoV-2 particles in electron microscopy images remains inadequately explored. Existing studies have largely focused on virus detection, classification, morphometry, or conventional image analysis, while comparatively little attention has been paid to pixel-level delineation of viral structures using specialised deep learning segmentation frameworks. To address this gap, we propose here a deep learning system based on convolutio
