Schizoid personality in girls: a follow-up study--what are the links with Asperger's syndrome?

Child psychiatric records of 33 girls given a diagnosis of "schizoid" personality in childhood, were compared with records of a control group of other referred girls and with those of 32 pairs of "schizoid" and control boys. Seventeen "schizoid" girls were seen again in adult life and compared with 32 "schizoid" boys previously followed up at the same age. The features of "schizoid" girls in childhood and adult life were very similar to those of the boys. A striking finding, possible due to referral bias, was the high rate of antisocial conduct in "schizoid" girls, both in childhood and later …

Personality measures as predictors of smoking initiation and cessation in the UNC Alumni Heart Study.

MMPI data collected from a sample of college men and women during 1964-1967 were used to predict smoking initiation and cessation over a 20-year follow-up period. People who subsequently began smoking were more rebellious, impulsive, sensation seeking, and hostile; were less likely to present a positive self-image; and were socially extraverted while in college. People who continued to smoke 20 years later were more hostile and sensation seeking. The personality variables that predicted smoking initiation and cessation were the same for men and women. Discussion centers on the potential role o…

Role of anxiety and personality in non-ulcer dyspepsia: a comparative study with duodenal ulcer.

BACKGROUND: Though emotional factors are known to influence gut functions, studies evaluating the role of anxiety and personality in non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) are few and have not yielded consistent results. AIMS: To find out whether anxiety and abnormal personality pattern are specifically associated with NUD. METHODS: 33 patients with NUD and 30 patients with duodenal ulcer, who were randomly selected from among those attending a gastroenterology out-patient clinic, were administered a) the Eyesenck Personality Inventory, to measure neuroticism and extroversion; and b) a short self-rating …

Validity of the Dissociative Experiences Scale in screening for multiple personality disorder: a multicenter study.

OBJECTIVE: The Dissociative Experiences Scale has proved a reliable and valid instrument to measure dissociation in many groups, but its capacity to distinguish patients with multiple personality disorder from patients with other psychiatric disorders has not yet been conclusively tested. METHOD: A discriminant analysis was performed to classify 1,051 subjects as having or not having multiple personality disorder. Another discriminant analysis was performed on a subgroup of 883 subjects more closely representing patients in a typical psychiatric facility in terms of base rates of dissociative…

The Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire as a predictor of six-month outcome in first episode mania.

The authors administered the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) near hospital discharge to 27 patients with first episode mania. All patients met DSM-III-R criteria for bipolar disorder, manic type, as assessed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R. Associations of TPQ scores with operationalized outcome variables were analyzed. Outcome variables included syndromic recovery at discharge and at 6 months, syndromic recurrence, and functional recovery. Patients who failed to achieve functional recovery by 6 months had significantly higher Novelty-Seeking dimensional score…

Minor stressful life events (daily hassles) in chronic primary headache: relationship with MMPI personality patterns.

This study investigated the relationship between minor life events (i.e. daily hassles) and personality patterns from selected scales of MMPI in the persistence of primary headache in 83 patients. Comparisons between headache subgroups indicated that tension-type headache patients are much more likely than those with migraine to have experienced high level of microstress (hassles density), with mixed headache in between. Tension-type headache patients reported higher MMPI scores on scales 1, Hypochondriasis (somatic concern), scale 3, Hysteria (denial) and scale 7, Psychasthenia (anxiety), but…

Comparison of million personality profiles of chronic residential substance abusers and a general outpatient population.

Several theories and studies have suggested that particular personality disorders or psychiatric symptoms should be associated with substance abuse. The current study was done to clarify these relationships by comparing scale profiles on the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory obtained by 144 inpatient residentially treated substance-abuse clients and 1000 general clinical outpatient clients in psychotherapy. A surprisingly large number of significant differences were noted. Substance-abuse clients displayed relative elevations on scales for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Hypomania, Antisocialism, N…

The use of hypnosis in a deaf patient with multiple personality disorder: a case report.

We present the first report of multiple personality disorder (MPD) in a prelingually deaf patient and the first description of alter personalities as the source of auditory hallucinations in a nonpsychotic deaf person. This young woman's history and clinical symptoms of MPD did not differ from those of hearing patients. A hypnotic trance was induced by instructing the patient in muscle relaxation, modeling relaxation with exhalation, and having the patient focus her gaze on the hypnotist repeatedly fingerspelling R-E-L-A-X. Hypnosis facilitated automatic handwriting, allowed the first meeting …

Duration of chronic pain and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory: profiles of industrially injured workers.

The present study explored the usefulness of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) in understanding the relationship between duration of chronic pain and psychiatric difficulties. The MMPI responses of workers' compensation patients with varying levels of low back pain chronicity were compared. One hundred ninety eight patients, divided into three groups according to length of disability, underwent social history interviews and completed the MMPI. In regard to the overall profile, the sample had elevations on the Hypochondriasis, Depression, and Hysteria scales. A series of an…

Unsuspected multiple personality disorder: an uncommon source of protracted resistance, interruption, and failure in psychoanalysis.

Multiple personality disorder (MPD) is being recognized with increasing frequency. A great imitator, it may be encountered among patients who appear to have a wide range of other diagnoses, and have been in treatment for years without the presence of MPD being discovered. Nine of 241 MPD patients interviewed by the author, 3.7%, had been accepted for psychoanalysis. In only one case had the diagnosis been appreciated by the analyst prior to his accepting the patient for analytic treatment. Four patients were profoundly resistant and or inaccessible to analysis for protracted periods. In one of…

Performance of agoraphobic families vs. non-agoraphobic families on the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF).

This study investigated whether the personality variables, as measured by the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF), differed significantly between families with an agoraphobic parent and families with nonagoraphobic parents. Participants were 15 agoraphobic female parents and 5 male agoraphobic parents, their spouses, and children. Two matched control groups of subjects (comparable to the female agoraphobic and male agoraphobic families) were used. Significant differences in personality variables were found between the families with agoraphobic parents and their matched controls. Si…

Psychological aspects of painful medical conditions in children. II. Personality factors, family characteristics and treatment.

In part II of a two-part series, the psychological aspects of painful medical conditions and their treatment are reviewed. While considerable attention has been devoted to the study of personality, family characteristics, treatment of recurrent abdominal pain, growing pains and headaches, with few exceptions these studies have significant methodological problems. Studies of the psychological aspects of pain associated with such pediatric disorders as cancer, sickle cell anemia, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and burns are generally only beginning to emerge, but at least a few of the single-cas…

[A statistical approach to Yatabe-Guilford personality inventory and manifest anxiety scale of the elderly].

In nursing, if we know an elderly person's mental condition, and that which does not make him/her too tired, this method can be very useful. Using this method we predicted the MAS score from scores of Y-G scales. We obtained the MAS score results by the following formula: MAS score not equal to 0.31 X Lack of objectivity +0.41 X Inferiority feelings -0.15 X Ascendance +0.34 X Y-G Nervousness +0.30 X Y-G Depression +9.54.

[Comparative multidimensional analysis of the personality traits of patients with different forms of gynecologic pathology].

The personality characteristics of gynecological patients with hormonal dysfunction versus hormone dependent pathology were compared, using a factorial analysis of answers to 377 questions of the Russian modified variant of MMPI and a cluster analysis of intergroup subdivisions. A group of patients with uterine myoma (UM) differed considerably from all the others in relation to six "varimax" factors. A new factor scale was elaborated which makes it possible to differentiate a group of patients with UM from both healthy women and other gynecological patients. The results obtained are discussed …

[Various aspects of the pathogenesis and treatment of hysterical neurosis and hysterical neurotic personality development].

The authors studied 53 patients with hysterical neurosis and 66 with hysterical neurotic development of personality. Factors contributing to an unfavourable course of neurosis and its transformation into a hysterical development were elicited; clinical variants of the formation of the hysterical neurotic personality development are described. A study was carried out aimed at comparing the functions of the serotoninergic and cholinergic systems in patients with hysterical neurosis, hysterical development and hysteroid psychopathy at the stage of decompensation. An increase in the changes in the…

Personality, coronary-prone behaviour and adrenergic factors in essential hypertension: possible implications for cardiac prevention.

An association between high blood pressure and the coronary-prone (or type A) behaviour pattern, established as risk factors for myocardial infarction and sudden death, has been postulated on the basis of similar psychophysiological mechanisms involving the sympathetic nervous system. Psychodynamic personality profiles and type A behaviour assessment have therefore been related to biochemical markers of sympathetic overactivity, but type A behaviour scores were generally found to be low in hypertensive subjects - and lowest in those with high plasma noradrenaline. However, projective assessmen…
