Diffusion MRI biomarkers for predicting treatment outcomes in infantile epileptic spasms syndrome with non-lesional MRI.

BACKGROUND: Infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) is a devastating developmental epileptic encephalopathy (DEE) and patients exhibit di … ippocampus. Meanwhile, the ASM treatment non-responders exhibited increased FC in areas such as the pons and brainstem. Although subgroup differences did not achieve statistical significance, trends suggest that white matter integrity and network organization may influence treatment outcomes. CONCLUSION: The results highlight widespread changes in whi …

MRI classification of progressive supranuclear palsy, Parkinson disease and controls using deep learning and machine learning algorithms for the identification of regions and tracts of interest as potential biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis has shown promise in differentiating neurodegenerative Parkinsonian syndr … controls with accuracies of 92 % and 95 %, respectively. Particularly, DTI derived measures for the pons, midbrain tegmentum, superior cerebral peduncle, putamen, and CC contributed to high accuracies. Furthermore, DL neural network classification of PSP and PD with 86 % accuracy showed the importance of 19 structures. The four most important features …

Sympathetic activation increases basilar arterial blood flow in normotensive but not hypertensive rats.

The close apposition between sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve terminals in the adventitia of cerebral arteries provides morphological e … reased local sympathetic activities in acutely stressful situations such as the "fight-or-flight response." This increased blood flow in defensive mechanism diminishes in genetic and nongenetic hypertensive rats due most likely to decreased parasympathetic nitrergic nerve terminals.

Diffusion MRI in corticofugal fibers correlates with hand function in unilateral cerebral palsy.

UNLABELLED: Diffusion MRI improves detection of abnormalities in white matter tracts in cerebral palsy (CP). Relationships between diffusion measurements and hand function are largely unexplored. We aimed first to assess microstructure of corticofugal fibers, and second to explore associations between tract injury as assessed by quantitative analysis of diffusion MRI and hand function in children with unilateral CP. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 15 children with unilateral CP (6 boys, median age 12.4 years, min 7.2, max 17) and 24 controls were included (9 boys, median age 12.7 year

Isolated oculomotor nerve paresis in anaplastic astrocytoma with exophytic invasion.

A 30-year-old man presented with a supratentorial malignant glioma manifesting as isolated progressive left oculomotor nerve paresis. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed an intra-axial tumor in the left temporal lobe, extending to the basal and prepontine cisterns, and compressing the brainstem. The tumor was removed subtotally. The histological diagnosis was anaplastic astrocytoma. Malignant glioma with exophytic growth in the temporal lobe should be considered in the differential diagnosis of isolated oculomotor nerve paresis.

Trak1 mutation disrupts GABA(A) receptor homeostasis in hypertonic mice.

Hypertonia, which results from motor pathway defects in the central nervous system (CNS), is observed in numerous neurological conditions, i … tants is likely to be caused by deficits in GABA-mediated motor neuron inhibition. We cloned the responsible gene, trafficking protein, kinesin binding 1 (Trak1), and showed that its protein product interacts with GABA(A) receptors. Our data implicate Trak1 as a crucial regulator of GABA(A) receptor homeostasis and underscore the importance of hyrt mic …

Comparison of flow artifacts between 2D-FLAIR and 3D-FLAIR sequences at 3 T.

It has been reported that 3D-FLAIR can reduce the flow artifact resulting from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) at 1.5 T compared to 2D-FLAIR. Flow-related artifacts tend to be worse at 3 T than at 1.5 T. The purpose of this study was to compare the CSF flow artifacts of 2D-FLAIR and 3D-FLAIR sequences at 3 T in eight healthy volunteers. The grade of CSF-related artifacts were scored through observing the perimedullary cistern, cerebellopontine angle cisterns, fourth ventricule, prepontine cistern, suprasellar cistern, ambient cisterns, sylvian fissures, third ventricle and lateral ventricles. Acute basilar artery occlusion treated by thromboaspiration in a cocaine and ecstasy abuser.

Thromboaspiration was performed in a young adult in a coma because of acute basilar artery occlusion associated with cocaine and ecstasy abuse 30 hours after symptom onset. There was complete recanalization of the basilar artery and favorable recovery. Because cocaine and ecstasy abuse has been reported to be a risk factor for ischemic stroke and fatal brain hemorrhage, thromboaspiration may be an alternative therapy to thrombolysis.

A computer model for describing the effect of urethral afferents on simulated lower urinary tract function.

A computer model of mechanical properties of the bladder, the urethra and the rhabdosphincter, as well as their neural control is presented in this paper. The model has a rather simple design and processes sensory information from both the bladder wall tension and urethral stretch. It is assumed that afferent signals from the urethra are involved in a sacral excitatory reflex and a supraspinal inhibitory reflex. Pressure and flow signals that resemble experimentally measured normal human behaviour could be simulated with this model. From these simulations the relation between the neural contro

Subcortical contributions to head movements in macaques. II. Connections of a medial pontomedullary head-movement region.

1. In the companion article, a variety of head movements were elicited by stimulation in, and adjacent to, the gigantocellular reticular nucleus (Cowie and Robinson 1994). We refer to this area, caudal to the abducens nucleus, as the gigantocellular head movement region. In the present paper, the anatomical connections of this region, as determined by injections of wheat-germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP), are reported. The majority of efferent and afferent connections were with areas related to head movements. 2. Efferent fibers from the region projected via two paths

Age-related changes in brainstem auditory neurotransmitters: measures of GABA and acetylcholine function.

This study was designed to determine if there are age-related alterations in the bio-synthetic enzyme glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), the degradative enzyme GABA-transaminase (GABA-T), and the uptake system for GABA in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (CIC), the cochlear nucleus (CN), and/or nuclei of the lateral lemniscus (NLL) of Fischer-344 rats. For purposes of comparison, the cholinergic neuronal system was studied in parallel in young adult (3-7 months), mature (15-17 months) and aged (24-26 months) rats. In young adults GAD activity was highest in the CIC (219 nmol/mg p

[Pathologic anatomy of cerebral arteriovenous malformations].

Cerebral vascular malformations are congenital anomalies of the development of the cerebral vascular tree due to defective maturation of the embryonic vascular system. In terms of pathological anatomy they may be classified into: telangiectasias, cavernous angiomas, venous angiomas and arteriovenous malformations (AVM). After a review of the site, macro- and microscopic aspects, the most common pictures related to each particular site are described.
