Efficacy of bibliotherapy combined with games to reduce fear of the dark in young children: results from a clinical trial.

UNLABELLED: Intense fear of the dark is a common issue among children, which can interfere with their daily functioning at family, social, and academic levels. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of a psychotherapeutic intervention based on bibliotherapy combined with play to overcome the fear of the dark in children between 4 and 8 years old. A total of 38 children participated, who were assigned to the experimental and control conditions on the waiting list. The bibliotherapy intervention in the experimental condition involved reading a book and playing the games proposed in each ch

Nuclear translocation of phosphorylated YB-1 via small extracellular vesicles contributes to the malignant phenotype of triple negative breast cancer.

Despite continuous progress in diagnosis and therapy, breast carcinoma (BC) remains a major health problem. Triple-negative (Estrogen Receptor-/Progesterone Receptor-/HER2-) breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive subtype due to its high metastatic potential and resistance to chemotherapy. The Y-box binding protein 1 (YB-1) transcription factor, a protein present in both cytoplasm and nucleus, is a driver of TNBC malignancy as it stimulates its cancer stem cell phenotype and disrupts cell cycle progression. Here, we hypothesized that YB-1-containing sEVs deliver YB-1 to the nuclear compart

Language-based EMA assessments help understand problematic alcohol consumption.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy alcohol consumption is a severe public health problem. But low to moderate alcohol consumption is associated with high subjective well-being, possibly because alcohol is commonly consumed socially together with friends, who often are important for subjective well-being. Disentangling the health and social complexities of alcohol behavior has been difficult using traditional rating scales with cross-section designs. We aim to better understand these complexities by examining individuals' everyday affective subjective well-being language, in addition to rating scales, and v

Free-Rider Games for Cooperative Spectrum Sensing and Access in CIoT Networks.

With the rapid development of technologies such as wireless communications and the Internet of Things (IoT), the proliferation of IoT devices will intensify the competition for spectrum resources. The introduction of cognitive radio technology in IoT can minimize the shortage of spectrum resources. However, the open environment of cognitive IoT may involve free-riding problems. Due to the selfishness of the participants, there are usually a large number of free-riders in the system who opportunistically gain more rewards by stealing the spectrum sensing results from other participants and acce

The pan-genome of the animal pathogen Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis reveals differences in genome plasticity between the biovar ovis and equi strains.

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is a facultative intracellular pathogen and the causative agent of several infectious and contagious chronic diseases, including caseous lymphadenitis, ulcerative lymphangitis, mastitis, and edematous skin disease, in a broad spectrum of hosts. In addition, Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infections pose a rising worldwide economic problem in ruminants. The complete genome sequences of 15 C. pseudotuberculosis strains isolated from different hosts and countries were comparatively analyzed using a pan-genomic strategy. Phylogenomic, pan-genomic, core genomi

[50 years lithium treatment].

Answers have been sought to the following questions of current interest: Does lithium have a prophylactic action? The claim that such an action has never been demonstrated was based on wrong assumptions, biased selection of references, and unjustified generalizations. What effect does long-term lithium treatment have on the patients' suicidal behavior? There is a close association between long-term lithium treatment, on the one hand, and lowered mortality and reduced suicidal behavior, on the other; no such association has been demonstrated for other mood stabilizers. What are the effects of l

The Brain Circuits and Dynamics of Curiosity-Driven Behavior in Naturally Curious Marmosets.

Curiosity is a fundamental nature of animals for adapting to changing environments, but its underlying brain circuits and mechanisms remain poorly understood. One main barrier is that existing studies use rewards to train animals and motivate their engagement in behavioral tasks. As such, the rewards become significant confounders in interpreting curiosity. Here, we overcame this problem by studying research-naïve and naturally curious marmosets that can proactively and persistently participate in a visual choice task without external rewards. When performing the task, the marmosets manifested

Applying the Integrative Model to Predict Intention to Use Corporal Punishment Among Low-income Parents.

Child corporal punishment (CP) is associated with child physical abuse, which is a public health problem in the United States. Informed by the integrative model of behavioral prediction, this study surveyed low-income Black, Hispanic, and White parents who had children younger than 6 years old (N = 260) to identify major risk factors that determined intention to use CP to discipline children. Structural equation modeling revealed that attitudes, descriptive norms, and perceived efficacy of alternative discipline strategies were associated with intention to use CP. Additionally, parents' childh

Neurocognitive and behavioral profile of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading preventable cause of cognitive deficit in developed countries and can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). This term encompasses a wide range of physical, mental, behavioral, and cognitive effects that result from damage caused by exposure to alcohol during intrauterine life. Alcohol consumption among the general population is common in Eastern European countries and especially among women at risk of social exclusion, who are the ones who lose or give up custody of their children. A high number of these children are adopted in Spain and many

Fractal Characterization of Stochastic Series Fluctuations of Children with Reading Disorders.

Reading is an emerging process from human brain activity. This process sometimes is subject to disorders which has been studied from the performance of studies that provide data that are treated with qualitative and quantitative linear tools to obtain the average behavior determined and the causality of it. This research focuses on the nonlinear quantitative study of reading disorder and in this way fractal geometry and roughness interface growth theory approach were selected to be used in the processing of brain wave quantification (EEG). From the EEG of children with and without reading diso

From Big Data to Knowledge in the Social Sciences.

One of the challenges associated with high-volume, diverse datasets is whether synthesis of open data streams can translate into actionable knowledge. Recognizing that challenge and other issues related to these types of data, the National Institutes of Health developed the Big Data to Knowledge or BD2K initiative. The concept of translating "big data to knowledge" is important to the social and behavioral sciences in several respects. First, a general shift to data-intensive science will exert an influence on all scientific disciplines, but particularly on the behavioral and social sciences g

OBJECTIVE: This case report describes the use of imagery rescripting as an adjunct to cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for bulimia nervosa. METHODS: The patient was a 22-year-old woman, who had a 6-year history of diagnosable eating problems, with no comorbid diagnosis. She had a history of emotional abuse by her family. The single session of imagery rescripting was aimed at effecting change in the core beliefs that were hypothesized to result from that emotional abuse, and hence in the associated bulimic psychopathology. RESULTS: While eight sessions of conventional CBT reduced symptom beha
