Examining a psychosocial interactive model of binge eating and vomiting in women with bulimia nervosa and subthreshold bulimia nervosa.

The current study tested a psychosocial interactive model of perfectionism, self-efficacy, and weight/shape concern within a sample of women with clinically significant bulimic symptoms, examining how different dimensions of perfectionism operated in the model. Individuals with bulimia nervosa (full diagnostic criteria or subthreshold) completed measures of bulimic symptoms, multidimensional perfectionism, self-efficacy, and weight/shape concern. Among those who were actively binge eating (n=180), weight/shape concern was associated with binge eating frequency in the context of high perfection

The link between judgments of comparative risk and own risk: further evidence.

Individuals typically believe that they are less likely than the average person to experience negative events, a phenomenon termed "unrealistic optimism". The direct method of assessing unrealistic optimism employs a question of the form, "Compared with the average person, what is the chance that X will occur to you?". However, it has been proposed that responses to such a question (direct-estimates) are based essentially just on estimates that X will occur to the self (self-estimates). If this is so, any factors that affect one of these estimates should also affect the other. This prediction

Effects of mu-, delta- and kappa-opioid receptor agonists on methamphetamine-induced self-injurious behavior in mice.

Opioid receptor agonists can differentially modify the behavioral effects of direct/indirect dopamine receptor agonists, such as methamphetamine, cocaine and apomorphine. However, the effects of opioid receptor agonists on high-dose methamphetamine-induced behavior have not yet been clarified. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of mu (morphine)-, delta (SNC80)- and kappa (U50,488H)-opioid receptor agonists on methamphetamine-induced self-injurious behavior and locomotor activity in mice. Methamphetamine (20 mg/kg) induced severe self-injurious behavior. In a

Validity and reliability of the CAPE: a self-report instrument for the measurement of psychotic experiences in the general population.

OBJECTIVE: General population longitudinal cohort studies have demonstrated the prognostic validity of self-reported psychotic experiences, but data on reliability and cross-validation with interview-based measures of these experiences are sparse. This study tested the reliability and validity of the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE42). METHOD: At baseline, the CAPE42 was used to measure the subclinical psychosis phenotype in a general population sample (n = 765). At follow-up (mean interval: 7.7 months), the Structured Interview for Schizotypy, Revised (SIS-R), the Brief Psy

Genetic counseling and parental self-concept change.

Twelve parents of children with genetic diseases (Klinefelter syndrome, trisomy 21, lactase deficiency, phenylketonemia, Noonan syndrome, ichthyosis, Prader-Willi syndrome, and trisomy 13) were tested with the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale prior to and immediately after genetic counseling. Total Positive Score, indicative of self-esteem level, changed significantly. The score increased due to positive changes in the subjects' family, social, moral, physical and psychologic identity, and affect and behavior. This change is interpreted as an improvement in self-concept. Two other changes were onl

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder in U.S. Military Veterans: A Multiple Baseline Study.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a supported intervention used with active-duty soldiers and veterans. In this multiple baseline study, we tested a 10-session ACT protocol for veterans with social anxiety disorder (SAD) using a culturally adapted protocol of ACT for veterans. At the individual level, three of four participants showed responses to treatment. Average self-monitored avoidance behaviors across all four participants decreased from 44.55 per day at pretreatment to 29.71 during treatment and further to 10.18 at follow-up. Average levels of self-reported anxiety moderately d

Social Management Training in Males With 47,XXY (Klinefelter Syndrome): A Pilot Study of a Neurocognitive-Behavioral Treatment Targeting Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Problems.

Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY) is associated with problems in social interaction and behavioral adaptation. Sixteen adolescents and adult men with 47,XXY enrolled in a pilot-study evaluating the effectiveness of Social Management Training (SMT), a novel neurocognitive-behavioral treatment program targeted at improving social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Participants reported improved emotional stability from pre- to post-test (5 months). Informants reported reductions in internalizing and externalizing symptoms, including improvement in self-regulation. Although informants did not re

Measuring Self-Soothing Ability in Patients with Childhood Trauma - Psychometric Evaluation of the Self-Soothing Scale in a Clinical Sample.

OBJECTIVES: The regulation of strong emotions is an essential skill for traumatized patients. The present instrument was developed for the measurement of the self-soothing ability in traumatized patients. METHODS: The psychometric properties of the SBS were investigated in a clinical sample of patients with childhood trauma (N = 143). In addition, the study explored the factorial structure, internal consistency, retest reliability, convergent validity, and responsiveness of the instrument. RESULTS: Results of an exploratory factor analysis indicated a two-factor structure: 'self-soothing' an

Does allopreening control avian ectoparasites?

For birds, the first line of defence against ectoparasites is preening. The effectiveness of self-preening for ectoparasite control is well known. By contrast, the ectoparasite control function of allopreening-in which one birds preens another-has not been rigorously tested. We infested captive pigeons with identical numbers of parasitic lice, and then compared rates of allopreening to the abundance of lice on the birds over time. We documented a negative relationship between rates of allopreening and the number of lice on birds. Moreover, we found that allopreening was a better predictor of l

Self-generated thoughts and depression: from daydreaming to depressive symptoms.

Human minds often engage in thoughts and feelings that are self-generated rather than stimulus-dependent, such as daydreaming. Recent research suggests that under certain circumstances, daydreaming is associated with adverse effects on cognition and affect. Based on recent literature about the influence of resting mind in relation to rumination and depression, this questionnaire study investigated mechanisms linking daydreaming to depressive symptoms. Specifically, an indirect effect model was tested in which daydreaming influences depressive symptoms through enhancing self-focus and ruminativ

The Agoraphobia Scale: an evaluation of its reliability and validity.

This article presents the Agoraphobia Scale (AS), and evidence for its reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change after treatment. The scale consists of 20 items depicting various typical agoraphobic situations, which are rated for anxiety/discomfort (0-4) and avoidance (0-2). The results show that AS has high internal consistency. Regarding concurrent validity it correlated significantly with other self-reported measures of agoraphobia (Mobility Inventory and Fear Questionnaire). The scale's predictive validity was shown as it correlated with avoidance behavior and self-rated anxiety du

Central cholinergic mechanisms in electrical self-stimulation and in drug-induced tremor in rats.

Oxotremorine, a specific stimulant of central muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, inhibited lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation at a dose-level less than one-tenth of that necessary to produce body tremor. Tremor induced by oxotremorine (0.5 mg/kg) was inhibited by pretreatment with hyoscine (scopolamine) (0.3 mg/kg) or propranolol (20 mg/kg) but not by methylhyoscine (0.3 mg/kg) or apomorphine (0.3 mg/kg). Inhibition of self-stimulation by oxotremorine (.03 mg/kg) was prevented by hyoscine (0.3 mg/kg) but not by any other of the drugs tested and thus constitutes a uniquely specific in vivo

Volunteer Peer Support for Chronic Pain Self-Management: A Qualitative Study of Benefits and Barriers.

BACKGROUND: Pain self-management is a key ingredient in chronic pain management. Peer support has been shown to be effective in helping patients self-manage other chronic conditions and may be a promising approach to implementing pain self-management programs more broadly without placing additional demands on clinicians. The Evaluation of a Peer Coach-Led Intervention to Improve Pain Symptoms (ECLIPSE) trial tested peer-supported chronic pain self-management. Although peers may be paid staff or volunteers, the ECLIPSE intervention was delivered by volunteer peer coaches, to test a low-resource
