OBJECTIVE: To compare Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) features and their diagnostic potential in the assessment of Synovial Chondromatosis (SC) of the Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight patients with symptoms and signs compatible with dysfunctional disorders of the TMJ underwent CT and MR scan. We considered the following parameters: soft tissue involvement (disk included), osteostructural alterations of the joints, loose bodies and intra-articular fluid. These parameters were evaluated separately by two radiologists with a "double blinded method

A 15-year-old man presented with headache. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a large extraaxial tumor with cyst at the right frontotemporal region. The solid part of the tumor was homogeneously enhanced on T(1)-weighted MR imaging after injection of gadolinium. Digital subtraction angiography of the external carotid artery revealed sunburst appearance corresponding to the tumor, which was fed by the right middle meningeal artery. His headache worsened and computed tomography revealed enlargement of the tumor and intracystic hemorrhage, so emergent operation was performed. At surgery, th

An 82-year-old diabetic female had been aware of gradually enlarging, painless scalp depressions in the bilateral parietal regions for more than 6 years. She had no history of head injury, or inflammatory or malignant disease. Her family history was unremarkable for hereditary bone disease. She had diabetes mellitus which had been well controlled with orally administered drugs. Blood examination showed normal renal and liver functions with normal serum calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus concentrations, in addition to normal parathyroid hormone and calcitonin levels. Neuroimaging including skul

Physiological studies of swallowing and the diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia are crucially dependent of detailed information of respiratory and feeding events. However, this information has been obtained by indirect and/or expensive methods, as well as by methods demanding exposure to radiation. In this context, the purpose of this study was twofold: (1) describe a new low-cost system for the analysis of the respiratory events during swallowing using the Forced Oscillation Technique and (2) evaluate the performance of this device in the description of physiological events during water swal

Hemolymphangioma of the pancreas is a very rare benign tumor. There were only five reports of this disease until March 2008. Herein, we report a case of hemolymphangioma of the pancreas with gastrointestinal bleeding due to duodenal invasion. A 53-year-old man had been admitted a referral hospital because of severe anemia due to gastrointestinal bleeding in December 2005. He was then transferred to our institute with a diagnosis of a tumor of the head of the pancreas with duodenal invasion in January 2006. No abnormalities were revealed except for anemia in laboratory data including CEA and CA

OBJECTIVE: This article discusses the imaging findings, clinical findings, and conservative chiropractic management of 2 patients with glenoid hypoplasia.
CLINICAL FEATURES: Conventional radiographs of both patients revealed a hypoplastic glenoid bilaterally. Notch-like defects along with signs of degenerative disease were evident within the lower portion of the glenoid rims bilaterally in 1 patient and in the left glenoid rim of the other patient. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a degenerative cyst or cortical defect in one patient along the anterior humeral head. The second patient show

Posterior dislocations of the sternoclavicular joint are rare injuries, representing approximately 3% of all major insults to the shoulder girdle. Despite their relative infrequency, they must be diagnosed and treated early because of the proximity of the sternoclavicular joint to sensitive anatomic structures in the superior mediastinum. Physical examination can yield limited findings, and a high index of suspicion is warranted for this injury pattern especially with impingement signs and symptoms: dyspnea, dysphagia, dysphonia, brachial plexus injury, and vascular alterations. Evaluation wit

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is an uncommon, deceptively bland mesenchymal neoplasm that typically occurs in the deep soft tissues of the proximal extremities of young to middle-aged patients. Intra-abdominal low-grade fibromyxoid sarcomas are distinctly rare. We describe the first reported example of this sarcoma involving the ovary. The 42-year-old patient presented with progressing abdominal pain and urinary frequency. Computed tomographic imaging of the abdomen and pelvis showed a 14-cm left-sided pelvic mass. The patient underwent surgical resection and, intraoperatively, a left ovarian

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a heterogeneous group of rare tumours that arise predominantly from the embryonic mesoderm. They present most commonly as an asymptomatic mass originating in an extremity but can occur anywhere in the body, particularly the trunk, retroperitoneum, or the head and neck. They account for about 0.7% of all adult malignancies.
METHOD: A review of the literature of STS was undertaken with emphasis on current approach in management.
RESULT: Despite recent advances in the knowledge of the molecular biology of STS, there is yet no identifiable aetiology in

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are common benign soft tissue neoplasms but they are found very rarely in the deep lobe of parotid gland. Surgical intervention in these tumors is challenging because of the proximity of the facial nerve, and thus knowledge of the anatomy and meticulous surgical technique are essential.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old female presented with a large asymptomatic mass, which had occupied the left facial area for over the past fifteen years, and she requested surgical excision for a cosmetically better facial appearance. The computed tomography (CT) scan showed a well-defined

BACKGROUND: The classic Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) patients usually present with progressive skin lesions over the lower extremities, following an indolent course. Although radiotherapy is an effective treatment for KS, radiation over these lesions is not without difficulty. The intrinsic difficulty resides in how a homogenous radiation dose over superficial lesions involving large areas and irregular surface is properly delivered. Several bolus techniques have thus been invented.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Aquaplast RT Thermoplastic is a new type of bolus material that can be easily molded and co

We herein present a case of a neonatal cervical cyst, which was diagnosed prenatally, and markedly decreased in size and disappeared after a local injection therapy of OK-432. A 0-day-old boy had an abnormal prenatal ultrasonography scan suggestive of rt. cervical cyst, measuring about 25 mm in diameter at 29 weeks' gestation. At birth, an elastic soft mass, measuring about 30 mm in diameter, was found on the right side of his neck. Computed tomography (CT) scans showed a giant cyst, which extended from the upper level of epipharynx to the upper mediastinum, and the contents were air and fluid

It is known that retinal haemorrhages can result in adults when elevated intrathoracic pressures due to coughing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, etc., force blood into the head. In infants under one year of age retinal and intracranial haemorrhage commonly occur together, but the same is not true for the older child and adult. The role of the elasticity of the infant skull (resulting from suture and fontanelle stretching) compared to the rigid mature skull, was investigated in a computer aided method. This showed that although in the event of Valsalva-like situations very high lumen pressures

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the time frame for tibial tunnel expansion in patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with hamstring autografts using an endoscopic technique. Does this expansion occur immediately after surgery or over the first 12 weeks of rehabilitation?
TYPE OF STUDY: Observational study involving 10 patients.
METHODS: The single incision technique used a transtibial approach for drilling the femoral tunnel. Femoral fixation was accomplished with a closed-loop EndoButton (Acufex, Smith & Nephew; Mansfield, MA) and tibial fixa

The detection of lymph nodes and a careful interpretation of dignity is one of the main indications for chest wall sonography. Palpable unclear masses of the chest wall can undergo US guided puctures very easily. Either rib and sternum fractures are detectable very sensitively. In addition to the more sensitive detection than in normal X-ray also accompanying soft parts processes, pleural effusions and haematomas can be visualised. Despite the physical laws of ultrasound, approximately 70% of the pleural surface can be accessed by sonography. The normal parietal pleural can be visualized and d

We report a solitary fibrous tumor in the nasal cavity of a 48-year-old woman who presented with a history of bilateral nasal obstruction and long-standing cocaine inhalation. Physical examination revealed a large mass involving the right nasal cavity and extending into the posterior aspect of the left nasal cavity. The computed tomography scan showed opacification of airways. During surgery, the mass was found to involve the entire nasal cavity, with extension to the right maxillary sinus, posterior nasal airways, and left nasal cavity. The mass was completely excised. Pathologic examination
