BACKGROUND: Outdoor play supports children's physical, social, and cognitive development; yet, opportunities are declining as indoor, screen-based childhoods become the norm. Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) centers are key settings for promoting outdoor play, but limited evidence exists on the health and developmental outcomes of licensed nature-based ELCC programs, particularly for children with and those without disabilities.
OBJECTIVE: The Sending Preschoolers Outside (SPROUT) and SPROUT-able studies aim to examine the impact of one of Canada's first purposely designed and built licen

BACKGROUND: Pandemics threaten economies, security, and public health, requiring strong global and local collaboration and coordination. Public receptivity to emergent vaccine technologies is essential to pandemic readiness. Although messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines offer rapid adaptability and hold promise, their use during the COVID-19 pandemic was met with polarizing debates that raise questions about the conditions needed to support acceptable and equitable use of new vaccines.
OBJECTIVE: This deliberative dialogue study aims to generate consensus on how to ensure informed, accessible public

BACKGROUND: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective biomedical prevention strategy, recommended by the World Health Organization since 2015. However, in South America, its adoption has been uneven, reflecting structural, political, and socio-cultural inequalities. This study maps and analyzes national PrEP policies across 13 South American countries through an intersectional lens, identifying challenges and opportunities for more equitable HIV prevention strategies.
METHODS: We conducted a documentary survey of national PrEP-related policies, clinical guidelines, regulations

SUMMARY: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is transmitted mainly by aerosol in particles <10 µm that can remain suspended for hours before being inhaled. Because particulate filtering facepiece respirators ('respirators'; e.g. N95 masks) are more effective than surgical masks against bio-aerosols, many international organisations now recommend that health workers (HWs) wear a respirator when caring for individuals who may have COVID-19. In South Africa (SA), however, surgical masks are still recommended for the routine care of individuals with possible or confirmed C

Artisanal gold-mining activities in the Philippines have proliferated since the early 1980s. Presently, environmental and health monitoring conducted by several governmental agencies is limited to the determination of total mercury only. Previous studies undertaken focused mainly on the exposure of adults and workers to mercury during mining/processing operations. However, in one area in Mindanao, mined ores are brought down and processed in the lowlands where residential communities are exposed to environmental pollutants resulting from gold processing/refining operations. The area of study i

BACKGROUND: Skin neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) pose significant diagnostic and management challenges in resource-limited settings due to constrained dermatological expertise, frontline health worker (FHW) training, and limited access to diagnostic resources. Mobile health apps with artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled diagnostic imaging capabilities have the potential to enhance clinical decision-making and professional development at the primary care level. The World Health Organization (WHO) skin NTD mobile app uses convolutional neural networks to analyze images of skin lesions and gen

Prison inmates suffer from a heavy burden of physical and mental health problems and have considerable need for healthcare and coverage after prison release. The Affordable Care Act may have increased Medicaid access for some of those who need coverage in Medicaid expansion states, but inmates in non-expansion states still have high need for Medicaid coverage and face unique barriers to enrollment. We sought to explore barriers and facilitators to Medicaid enrollment among prison inmates in a non-expansion state. We conducted qualitative interviews with 20 recently hospitalized male prison inm

BACKGROUND: Medical professionalism is a core component of health professions education (HPE), yet prevailing frameworks have largely been developed from provider perspectives and within Western contexts. The perspectives of patients and communities, particularly in African and multicultural settings, remain underrepresented. In addition, little is known about how generational differences shape expectations of professional conduct in healthcare.
METHODS: This qualitative narrative inquiry investigated perceptions of medical professionalism among 32 participants in Mauritius, including 16 from

PURPOSE: Professionals in healthcare, social services and the education system are confronted with a growing number of children with chronic conditions. Complex treatment plans, care coordination and cross-system care needs result in additional demands on professionals. This study aimed to explore professionals' perspectives on the patient journeys of children with chronic conditions in Germany and identify opportunities to improve care.
METHODS: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews conducted from May 2023 to February 2024. A purposive sample of professionals working with ch

Background: Herpes zoster (HZ), commonly known as shingles, and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) represent growing public health concerns, particularly among older adults. Despite the established efficacy of the herpes zoster vaccine (HZV), global uptake remains suboptimal. Objectives: This scoping review maps evidence from Saudi Arabia evaluating the baseline knowledge, awareness, attitudes, acceptance, hesitancy, and clinical uptake of the HZV among general adults, high-risk populations, and healthcare workers (HCWs). Methods: The JBI and PRISMA-ScR methodological frameworks were strictly adher

BACKGROUND: Primary care-based secure firearm storage programs are well-positioned to prevent firearm-related injury, the leading cause of death for young people in the United States. While recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and US Surgeon General, these programs have yet to become routine practice. Our cluster randomized hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial tested implementation strategies across 30 clinics in two large health systems for a universal evidence-based secure firearm storage program, S.A.F.E. Firearm (Suicide and Accident Prevention through Family Education).

Violence and harassment toward transgender women are associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and social support might moderate such association. This analysis explored the association between certain forms of violence and harassment and suicidal ideation and moderation by social support. Better understanding of these associations could guide mental health services and structural interventions appropriate to lived experiences of transgender women. This cross-sectional analysis used data from CDC's National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Among Transgender Women. During 2019-2020, transgend

BACKGROUND: Interventions to decrease burnout and increase well-being in health care workers (HCWs) and improve organizational safety culture are urgently needed. This study was conducted to determine the association between Positive Leadership WalkRounds (PosWR), an organizational practice in which leaders conduct rounds and ask staff about what is going well, and HCW well-being and organizational safety culture.
METHODS: This study was conducted in a large academic health care system in which senior leaders were encouraged to conduct PosWR. The researchers used data from a routine cross-sec

BACKGROUND: Healthcare resource constraints in low and middle-income countries necessitate selection of cost-effective public health interventions to address COVID-19.
METHODS: We developed a dynamic COVID-19 microsimulation model to evaluate clinical and economic outcomes and cost-effectiveness of epidemic control strategies in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Interventions assessed were Healthcare Testing (HT), where diagnostic testing is performed only for those presenting to healthcare centres; Contact Tracing (CT) in households of cases; Isolation Centres (IC), for cases not requiring hospit

UNLABELLED: Policy Points: While most scholarship regarding the US Public Health Service's STD experiments in Guatemala during the 1940s has focused on the intentional exposure experiments, secondary research was also conducted on biospecimens collected from these subjects. These biospecimen experiments continued after the Guatemala grant ended, and the specimens were used in conjunction with those from the Tuskegee syphilis experiments for ongoing research. We argue there should be a public accounting of whether there are still biospecimens from the Guatemala and Tuskegee experiments held in

Remarkable progress has been made towards halving of maternal deaths and deaths of children aged 1-59 months, although the task is incomplete. Newborn deaths and stillbirths were largely invisible in the Millennium Development Goals, and have continued to fall between maternal and child health efforts, with much slower reduction. This Series and the Every Newborn Action Plan outline mortality goals for newborn babies (ten or fewer per 1000 livebirths) and stillbirths (ten or fewer per 1000 total births) by 2035, aligning with A Promise Renewed target for children and the vision of Every Woman
