A rare case of an intratendinous ganglion cyst extending into the muscle belly of flexor carpi radialis: a case report and review of the literature.

ITGCs (intratendinous ganglion cysts) involving the flexor compartment of the wrist are uncommon, and reports are scarce in the literature. The differential diagnosis is wide and can mimic sinister lesions. We report a case of a 62-year-old male, that presented to our tertiary orthopaedic oncology service with an intratendinous ganglion cyst, extending into the muscle belly of flexor carpi radialis. We describe this rare presentation and review the literature.

Detection of osteoporotic-related bone changes and prediction of distal radius strength using Raman spectra from excised human cadaver finger bones.

While osteoporosis is reliably diagnosed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), screening rates are alarmingly low, contributing to p … e performed RS upon diaphyseal and epiphyseal regions of exposed proximal phalanges from 12 cadaver forearms classified as healthy (n = 3), osteopenic (n = 4), or osteoporotic (n = 5) based on wrist T-scores measured by DXA. We observed a significant decrease in phosphate to matrix ratio and a significant increase in carbonate substitution in the osteopor …

Muscle-MRI and Functional Levels for the Evaluation of Upper Limbs in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: A Critical Review of the Literature.

Many qualitative and quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques have been applied to evaluate muscle fat degeneration in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) subjects, but only few studies have focused on the upper limbs. We reviewed the literature in order to evaluate the association between muscle MRI findings and motor function levels in the upper limbs of DMD patients. Ten studies with upper limb muscle MRI data were available. Four explored all upper limb segments, while six explored only the forearm. Functional assessments were performed in nine of the ten studies. All of the …

An Exploratory Study of the Effects of the pH of Synthetic Urine on Skin Integrity in Healthy Participants.

BACKGROUND: Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) develops from prolonged exposure of skin to urine and/or stool and represents a common … tion (SCH), and skin surface pH. METHODS: S-urine solutions (pH 5.0-9.0) were applied to the volar forearms of 15 healthy participants for 2 h, with another site serving as the untreated control. Measurements of TEWL, SCH, and skin surface pH were obtained at baseline (BL) and after each challenge. Skin buffering capacity was also examined in 5 volunteer …

A case of vancomycin-induced drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome with failure to respond to cyclosporine treatment.

Drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is a rare delayed drug reaction that often occurs 2-6 weeks after initiation of therapy and may develop into a life-threatening systemic reaction. Besides immediate discontinuation of the suspected inciting drug, initiation of high dose systemic corticosteroids has long been the mainstay of treatment for severe cases. Nevertheless, significant drawbacks associated with systemic corticosteroid therapy, such as the requirement of a long tapering period post resolution and extensive adverse side effects profile, have motivated clinicians t

Anatomical variations of the extensor tendons of the fetal thumb.

PURPOSE: The extensor pollicis longus (EPL) and brevis (EPB) and abductor pollicis longus (APL) are muscles located in the posterior compartment of the forearm. These muscles allow the thumb to move independently from the other four fingers by attaching to the thumb separately. This study's goal was to investigate the tendon variations and insertions of these muscles. METHODS: Our study was conducted on 43 fetal cadavers (86 upper extremities) aged between 17 and 40 weeks of gestation. This study investigated the tendon numbers and insertions of the EPL, EPB, and APL. RESULTS: The tendon num…

Sparing the pronator quadratus for volar plating of distal radius fractures: a comparative study of two methods.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to compare the results of two methods for sparing the pronator quadratus in volar plating of distal radius fractures. METHODS: A total of 110 patients were randomized to volar plating with sparing of the pronator quadratus either by a transverse incision along the distal border of the pronator quadratus (Group A, 55 people) or by the brachioradialis splitting method (Group B, 55 people). The operative and radiation time, range of motion, grip strength, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) scores, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores, and c

Comparison of lateral and skyline fluoroscopic views for detection of prominent screws in distal radius fractures plating: results of an ultrasonographic study.

INTRODUCTION: Extensor tendon rupture is a recognized complication of volar plate fixation of distal radius fractures due to screws protruding past the dorsal cortex. The aim of this study was to compare the Skyline view with traditional lateral fluoroscopic views using ultrasonography as a reference standard in the postoperative assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A monocentric prospective study was conducted to identify screws penetrating the dorsal cortex after volar plating of distal radius fractures. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTION: Intraoperative anteroposterior (AP) and lateral views were us

Intraneural Median Nerve Anatomy and Implications for Treating Mixed Median Nerve Injury in the Hand.

Background: Nerve transfers have resulted in increased interest in the microanatomy of peripheral nerves. Herein, we expand our understanding of the internal anatomy of the digital nerve to the ulnar index and long fingers, the radial long and ring fingers, and the nerves to the second and third web spaces. Methods: The median nerve was dissected from the digital nerves to the antecubital fossa in 14 fresh upper extremities. The distance of proximal internal neurolysis of the fascicles to the second and third web space and proper digital nerves was measured relative to the radial styloid. Plex

Patterns of the superficial veins of the cubital fossa: A meta-analysis.

Background The aim of this systematic review is to quantitatively synthesize evidence on the prevalence of superficial vein patterns in the cubital region. Method A systematic literature search was conducted through a number of electronic databases. We identified 27 studies, including 9924 arms, which met the inclusion criteria. Results Meta-analysis showed that "N" shaped arrangement type was the commonest pattern (≈44-60%) followed by "M" shaped arrangement (≈20-25%). The prevalence of "M" type and "M"-like type was significantly higher in males, whereas females showed a significant predomin

Congenital Bilateral Absence of the Radial Artery: A Very Rare Variation in Humans - Phylogenetic and Ontogenetic Aspects.

In an 80-year-old Caucasian woman, both radial arteries were found to be replaced by an enlarged anterior interosseous artery. Additionally, the right forearm revealed a persistent median artery which formed the superficial palmar arch together with the ulnar artery. In both hands, the replaced radial artery was connected only to the deep but not the superficial palmar arch. In clinical practice, lack of an arterial pulse on the radial aspect of the wrist joint may indicate the presence of this anatomic variation. In this case, arterial blood sample collections, application of contrast media, …

Evaluation and management of fibrofatty tumors of the extremities: case report.

Patients presenting with enlarging fibrofatty masses in the extremities pose an interesting dilemma to clinicians, as the differential diagnosis in such cases ranges from benign to malignant, and from lesions optimally managed operatively to those managed nonoperatively. The differential diagnosis includes benign lipoma, liposarcoma, lipoblastoma, and fibrolipomatous hamartoma (lipomatosis) of the nerves. The authors present the case of a 14-year-old girl with an enlarging fibrofatty mass of the forearm, initially thought, based on diagnostic imaging, to be a fibrolipomatous hamartoma of the m…
