Evaluating Quality of Life of Prostate Cancer Patients After Radical Prostatectomy.

Background Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer globally and has a significant impact on patients' quality of life (QoL). The treatment of prostate cancer, particularly through radical prostatectomy, offers curative benefits but often results in adverse effects such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. These issues can persist long after treatment, affecting both physical and mental well-being. Beyond these complications, patients may also experience emotional distress, anxiety, and social implications, such as changes in relationships and self-perception.

Toward an Agile System: Iranian Information System for Covid-19-Affected Patients Data Collection from Iranian Hospitals.

COVID-19's rapid spreads has caused a global pandemic. On 19th February 2020, Iran reported its first confirmed cases of infections in Qom City and the number of diagnosed cases and the death toll rose exponentially in March [1-3]. Managing the disease, which is considered a pandemic according to the World Health Organization (WHO) [4], requires definite approaches differing according to various factors in each country, which may also lead to (in)effective dealing with the disease. In addition, using international data and information, and WHO advice, especially in the crisis and therapeutic p

The epidemiological surveillance of malignant mesothelioma in Italy (1993-2015): methods, findings, and research perspectives.

BACKGROUND: as a legacy of the large asbestos consumption until the definitive ban in 1992, Italy had to tackle a real epidemic of asbestos related diseases. The Italian National Registry of Malignant Mesotheliomas (ReNaM) is a permanent surveillance system of mesothelioma incidence, with a regional structure. Aims, assignments and territorial network of ReNaM are described, as well as data collection, recording and coding procedures. OBJECTIVES: to describe the Italian epidemiological surveillance system of mesothelioma incidence, to provide updated data about occurrence of malignant mesothe

Protocol of a population-based prospective COVID-19 cohort study Munich, Germany (KoCo19).

BACKGROUND: Due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, public health interventions have been introduced globally in order to prevent the spread of the virus and avoid the overload of health care systems, especially for the most severely affected patients. Scientific studies to date have focused primarily on describing the clinical course of patients, identifying treatment options and developing vaccines. In Germany, as in many other regions, current tests for SARS-CoV2 are not conducted on a representative basis and in a longitudinal design. Furthermore, knowledge about the immune status of the populatio

Current epidemiological trends for Chagas disease in Latin America and future challenges in epidemiology, surveillance and health policy.

Chagas disease, named after Carlos Chagas, who first described it in 1909, exists only on the American Continent. It is caused by a parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted to humans by blood-sucking triatomine bugs and via blood transfusion. Chagas disease has two successive phases: acute and chronic. The acute phase lasts six-eight weeks. Several years after entering the chronic phase, 20-35% of infected individuals, depending on the geographical area, will develop irreversible lesions of the autonomous nervous system in the heart, oesophagus and colon, and of the peripheral nervous

Quality of life and living with Parkinson's disease: a qualitative exploration within an Irish context.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is incurable, and the rate of progression varies meaning that people face a long future with an unpredictable condition that can significantly influence their quality of life. To date, much of the international research has focused on measuring and describing quality of life in Parkinson's from a quantitative perspective. Given its multidimensional nature, the present study aims to explore the concept using a qualitative approach so factors influencing self-reported quality of life can be understood in greater depth. METHODS: Using a qualitative descriptive app

Cross-Trait Mendelian Randomization Study to Investigate Whether Migraine Is a Risk Factor for Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Migraine is common among people with multiple sclerosis (MS), but the reasons for this are unknown. We tested 3 hypothesized mechanisms for this observed comorbidity, including migraine is a risk factor of MS, genetic variants are shared between the conditions, and migraine is because of MS. METHODS: Data were from 2 sources: publicly available summary statistics from genome-wide association studies of MS (N = 115,748) and migraine (N = 375,752 and N = 361,141) and a case-control study of MS recruited from the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Health Plan (N = 1

Positive behaviour support training for staff for treating challenging behaviour in people with intellectual disabilities: a cluster RCT.

BACKGROUND: Preliminary studies have indicated that training staff in Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) may help to reduce challenging behaviour among people with intellectual disability (ID). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether or not such training is clinically effective in reducing challenging behaviour in routine care. The study also included longer-term follow-up (approximately 36 months). DESIGN: A multicentre, single-blind, two-arm, parallel-cluster randomised controlled trial. The unit of randomisation was the community ID service using an independent web-based randomisation system and ran

Elective freezing of embryos versus fresh embryo transfer in IVF: a multicentre randomized controlled trial in the UK (E-Freeze).

STUDY QUESTION: Does a policy of elective freezing of embryos, followed by frozen embryo transfer result in a higher healthy baby rate, after first embryo transfer, when compared with the current policy of transferring fresh embryos? SUMMARY ANSWER: This study, although limited by sample size, provides no evidence to support the adoption of a routine policy of elective freeze in preference to fresh embryo transfer in order to improve IVF effectiveness in obtaining a healthy baby. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The policy of freezing all embryos followed by frozen embryo transfer is associated with a

Feasibility and Cultural Adaptation of a Community-Engaged Physical Activity Intervention for Hispanic Older Adults: Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The adult Hispanic population of the United States faces an increased risk of dementia compared to non-Hispanic White adults. Physical activity (PA) can help reduce dementia risk, but culturally adapted interventions for Hispanic populations are lacking. Culturally adapted interventions are needed to increase uptake and adherence to brain health promotion strategies in the Hispanic community. OBJECTIVE: The De Pie y a Movernos intervention aims to reduce barriers to participation in clinical research by culturally adapting a remotely based PA intervention for middle-aged and older

Decision-Making Process of Home and Social Care Professionals Using Telemonitoring of Activities of Daily Living for Risk Assessment: Embedded Mixed Methods Multiple-Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with cognitive deficits face difficulties in recalling daily challenges and lack self-awareness, impeding home care clinicians from obtaining reliable information on functional decline and home care needs and possibly resulting in suboptimal service delivery. Activity of daily living (ADL) telemonitoring has emerged as a tool to optimize evaluation of ADL home care needs. Using ambient sensors, ADL telemonitoring gathers information about ADL behaviors such as preparing meals and sleeping. However, there is a significant gap in understanding on how ADL telemonitoring d

Acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of caregiver-assisted HIV self-testing among children using an oral mucosal test in Uganda and Zambia: a prospective interventional study.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief supported oral caregiver-assisted HIV self-testing (CG-HIVST) to address the gap in HIV diagnosis of children. We aimed to investigate caregiver uptake, results return, acceptability, and potential social harms of CG-HIVST. METHODS: This prospective, interventional, study was done at 32 health facilities in Uganda and 15 health facilities in Zambia. Caregivers aged 18 years and older (plus emancipated minors aged 15-17 years in Uganda) living with HIV who were currently accessing HIV care and considere

Association of Race/Ethnicity and Social Disadvantage With Autism Prevalence in 7 Million School Children in England.

IMPORTANCE: The global prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been reported to be between 1% and 2% of the population, with little research in Black, Asian, and other racial/ethnic minority groups. Accurate estimates of ASD prevalence are vital to planning diagnostic, educational, health, and social care services and may detect possible access barriers to diagnostic pathways and services and inequalities based on social determinants of health. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether socioeconomic disadvantage is associated with ASD prevalence and the likelihood of accessing ASD services in r

Developing a comprehensive inventory to define harm reduction housing.

BACKGROUND: The City of Boston has faced unprecedented challenges with substance use amidst changes to the illicit drug supply and increased visibility of homelessness. Among its responses, Boston developed six low threshold harm reduction housing (HRH) sites geared towards supporting the housing needs of people who use drugs (PWUD) and addressing health and safety concerns around geographically concentrated tent encampments. HRH sites are transitional supportive housing that adhere to a "housing first" approach where abstinence is not required and harm reduction services and supports are co-l

"They don't realise how hard he has to try every day": The rewards and challenges of parenting a child with developmental language disorder.

BACKGROUND: An emerging body of literature explores the impact of living with developmental language disorder (DLD) on children, individuals and families. This work has identified a range of challenges and strengths. However, there is limited evidence from the DLD community about the impacts of living with DLD in relation to parenting. AIMS: We explored the perspectives of caregivers in response to an open-text survey question: "What is most rewarding and challenging about being a parent to a child with DLD?" METHODS & PROCEDURES: Respondents were caregivers of children with DLD who had sign

The ACE of Hearts Serious Game for Young People With Adverse Childhood Experiences: Experience-Based Co-Design and Agile Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Young people exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are at risk of poor mental and physical health across the life course, yet many struggle to access timely help. Serious games offer an engaging, scalable, and stigma-reducing support, but few are co-designed with young people who have lived experience of ACEs, and methodological accounts of how participatory design is operationalized alongside software delivery are scarce. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to (1) develop and apply a novel methodological framework integrating experience-based co-design (EBCD) with agile game developmen

Improving Cardiometabolic Health in Adolescent Girls With Elevated Anxiety: Web-Based Multisite, Pilot, and Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety is common in adolescents with elevated BMI (kg/m2), affecting 33%-43% of adolescents with overweight or obesity (age- and sex-specific BMI ≥85th percentile ). Anxiety has been associated with poorer cardiometabolic health, and disinhibited eating in response to anxiety may be a key explanatory mechanism. Therefore, reducing anxiety in adolescents may improve disinhibited eating patterns and prevent worsening cardiometabolic health. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study primarily aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of 2 virtual group psychological interventions, interpe

Insights and Recommendations From Moderators and Community Members for Keeping Online Peer Support Safe: Thematic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Online peer support can help people living with long-term physical health conditions to manage their mental well-being. Although the potential negative events that can occur and risks associated with web-based peer communities are well recognized, our understanding of how best to moderate these spaces is relatively limited, particularly with regard to new communities. Previous work has focused on the experiences of either moderators or community members. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the perspectives of both members and moderators of a new online peer support community to
