The control of Simulium damnosum at Abuja, Northern Nigeria, 1955-60.

This paper gives a comprehensive account of the first six years of operation of an onchocerciasis control pilot project in an area of over 3000 km(2) in the Abuja Emirate, Northern Nigeria. Control was attempted by the use of DDT against the larvae of the vector, Simulium damnosum. For the first two years technical DDT in diesel oil was applied. Later, this insecticide was used in miscible liquid form; this formulation gave as good results as the technical DDT and was easier to handle and apply. The authors conclude that, by the methods and in the conditions described, 90% control (although not

Pesticide exposure among organic and conventional smallholder farmers in Costa Rica and Uganda: biomarker evidence on exposure determinants.

BACKGROUND: Pesticides play a crucial role in pest control; however, exposure remains high, particularly among smallholder farmers in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) with little access to pesticide safety training. This study aimed to provide comparative biomarker-based evidence from Latin America and Africa and identify actionable determinants of exposure to inform context-specific interventions and sustainable agricultural policies. METHODS: We collected urine samples from 601 conventional and organic smallholder farmers in Zarcero County, Costa Rica, and Wakiso District, Uga

Effect of Nanoemulsions of Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium and Oenothera biennis Flowers Against the West Nile Virus Vector, Culex pipiens, with Phytochemical Profile.

(1) Background: Mosquitoes represent major vectors of human pathogens, and their control remains a global public health priority. However, the widespread use of synthetic insecticides has resulted in environmental contamination, adverse effects on non-target organisms, and the rapid emergence of insecticide resistance. These limitations have intensified the search for sustainable botanical alternatives. (2) Methods: The present study investigated the phytochemical composition and larvicidal efficacy of flower extracts from Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium and Oenothera biennis, alongside their n…

Improving nutrition outcomes through enhanced allocative efficiency of investments in 24 high risk counties in Kenya: An Optima Nutrition modelling study.

INTRODUCTION: Undernutrition remains a significant global challenge, severely impacting children's development and growth. To address this, the Sustainable Development Goals target a substantial reduction in stunting and wasting by 2025. Achieving these goals requires scaling up evidence-based nutritional interventions; however, limited budgets pose challenges in funding all necessary programs. To assist policymakers in making informed decisions, the World Bank developed the Optima Nutrition Modelling tool, which optimizes the allocation of nutrition investments. Kenya, with its high prevalenc

Asymptomatic Plasmodium infection and predictors among schoolchildren in Bahir Dar Zuria District, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic Plasmodium infection is a protozoan disease transmitted by vectors, in which the parasite remains inside the host without causing signs and/or symptoms. It poses a significant challenge to malaria control and elimination efforts due to its role in sustaining silent transmission within communities. Despite ongoing progress toward the 2030 malaria elimination targets, the disease remains a significant public health issue in Ethiopia. Schoolchildren in endemic areas are common carriers of the parasite and deserve special attention, as they represent a highly vulnerable po

The long-term persistence of the wMel strain in Rio de Janeiro is threatened by poor integrated vector management and bacterium fitness cost on Aedes aegypti.

New tools and methods are currently under evaluation by the World Health Organization for preventing arbovirus transmission, such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. One promising approach involves deploying Aedes aegypti with the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia pipientis to disrupt arbovirus transmission within endemic urban environments. The release program of mosquitoes with the Wolbachia's wMel strain started in August 2017 in 6.88% of the city area of Rio de Janeiro, where 13.1% of the city's population live (~890,000 inhabitants). The deployment of Wolbachia wMel strain in Rio finished i

Societal uses of the main water bodies inhabited by malaria vectors and implications for larval source management.

BACKGROUND: Larval source management (LSM) effectively reduces mosquito populations at their breeding sites, addressing issues like insecticide resistance that limit the effectiveness of primary interventions such as insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). Although traditionally used in urban and dry areas, recent research suggests it might also be effective in rural settings in eastern and southern Africa, where Anopheles funestus thrives in permanent water bodies that sustain year-round transmission. Targeting these habitats could enhance LSM, but it requires understanding local community practices

Relationships between biological age, distance from aquatic habitats and pyrethroid resistance status of Anopheles funestus mosquitoes in south-eastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission can be highly heterogeneous between and within localities, and is influenced by factors such as survival an … ical age. Adults emerging from larval collections in the same villages were tested against the same insecticides at 3-5, 8-11 or 17-20 days old. FINDINGS: Mosquitoes collected nearest to the aquatic habitats (50-100 m) had the lowest mortalities compared to other distances, with a maximum of 51% mortality at 10× permethrin. For the age-synchronized mosquitoes …

Fine-scale distribution of malaria mosquitoes biting or resting outside human dwellings in three low-altitude Tanzanian villages.

BACKGROUND: While malaria transmission in Africa still happens primarily inside houses, there is a substantial proportion of Anopheles mosquitoes that bite or rest outdoors. This situation may compromise the performance of indoor insecticidal interventions such as insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). This study investigated the distribution of malaria mosquitoes biting or resting outside dwellings in three low-altitude villages in south-eastern Tanzania. The likelihood of malaria infections outdoors was also assessed. METHODS: Nightly trapping was done outdoors for 12 months to collect resting mo

Secondary malaria vectors in western Kenya include novel species with unexpectedly high densities and parasite infection rates.

BACKGROUND: Malaria vector control has been implemented chiefly through indoor interventions targeting primary vectors resulting in population declines-pointing to a possible greater proportional contribution to transmission by secondary malaria vectors with their predominant exophagic and exophilic traits. With a historical focus on primary vectors, there is paucity of data on secondary malaria vectors in many countries in Africa. This study sought to determine the species compositions and bionomic traits, including proportions infected with Plasmodium falciparum and phenotypic insecticide re

Estimates of the population size and dispersal range of Anopheles arabiensis in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: implications for a planned pilot programme to release sterile male mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles arabiensis is a major malaria vector, recently implicated as contributing to ongoing residual malaria transmission in South Africa, which feeds and rests both indoors and outdoors. This species is, therefore, not effectively targeted using core malaria vector control interventions alone. Additionally, increasing resistance to available insecticides necessitates investigations into complementary non-insecticide-based vector control methods for outdoor-resting mosquitoes. The feasibility of the sterile insect technique (SIT) as a complementary vector control intervention is…

Knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations within seventeen field populations of Aedes albopictus from Beijing China: first report of a novel V1016G mutation and evolutionary origins of kdr haplotypes.

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus (Skuse) is an important vector of chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever and Zika viruses. In the absence of anti-viral medication and with limited availability of a commercial vaccine for public health use, vector control remains an effective means for reducing Aedes-borne disease morbidity. Knowledge about genetic mutations associated with insecticide resistance (IR) is a prerequisite for developing rapid resistance diagnosis, and the distribution and frequency of IR conferring mutations is important information for making smart vector control decisions. METHODS: Par

Eugenol-hyperactivated nymphs of Triatoma infestans become intoxicated faster than non-hyperactivated nymphs when exposed to a permethrin-treated surface.

BACKGROUND: Eugenol is a botanical monoterpene that hyperactivates the blood-sucking bug Triatoma infestans, and permethrin is a pyrethroid with a strong triatomicide effect. In the present work, we tested the hypothesis that eugenol-hyperactivated nymphs of T. infestans pick up more insecticide, and then become intoxicated faster, than non-hyperactivated nymphs when exposed to a permethrin-treated surface. RESULTS: Values of knockdown time 50% (KT50) for third-instar T. infestans exposed to a paper impregnated with permethrin were obtained under the following situations: (a.i.) immediately a

Monitoring changes in malaria epidemiology and effectiveness of interventions in Ethiopia and Uganda: Beyond Garki Project baseline survey.

BACKGROUND: Scale-up of malaria interventions seems to have contributed to a decline in the disease but other factors may also have had some role. Understanding changes in transmission and determinant factors will help to adapt control strategies accordingly. METHODS: Four sites in Ethiopia and Uganda were set up to monitor epidemiological changes and effectiveness of interventions over time. Here, results of a survey during the peak transmission season of 2012 are reported, which will be used as baseline for subsequent surveys and may support adaptation of control strategies. Data on malario

Neurochemical effects of chronic dietary and repeated high-level acute exposure to chlorpyrifos in rats.

Very little is known about the effects of chronic exposure to relatively low levels of anticholinesterase insecticides or how the effects of chronic exposure compare to those of higher, intermittent exposure. To that end, adult male rats were fed an anticholinesterase insecticide, chlorpyrifos (CPF), for 1 year at three levels of dietary exposure: 0, 1, or 5 mg/kg/day (0+oil, 1+oil, and 5+oil). In addition, half of each of these groups also received a bolus dosage of CPF in corn oil ("spiked" animals; 60 mg/kg initially and 45 mg/kg thereafter) every 2 months (0+CPF, 1+CPF, 5+CPF). Animals wer…

Resurgence of malaria in Bombay (Mumbai) in the 1990s: a historical perspective.

Bombay has achieved extraordinary success in controlling its malaria problem for nearly six decades by relying primarily on legislative meas … ealth officials attributed the resurgence to the global phenomenon of mosquito-vector resistance to insecticides, and Plasmodium resistance to antimalarial chemoprophylaxis and treatment. Local scientists who investigated the problem offered no support to this explanation. So what might explain the resurgence? What factors led the problem to reach an epidemic …

Geographical perspectives on bednet use and malaria transmission in The Gambia, West Africa.

Insecticide-impregnated bednets are now widely accepted as an important tool in reducing malaria-related deaths in children in Africa. Defining the circumstances in which net treatment programmes are likely to be effective is essential to a rational development of this control strategy. In The Gambia a National Impregnated Bednet Programme was introduced into the primary health care system in 1992. Prior to its introduction baseline epidemiological and entomological studies were conducted throughout the country. These studies showed that in areas where mosquito biting nuisance was high, people

Influence of pollen feeding and physiological condition on pesticide sensitivity of the honey bee Apis mellifera carnica.

In two consecutive years heavy bee mortality at end April/early May followed the use of pesticides classed as harmless for bees along road verges. It was thought that old weak winter bees had succumbed to a preparation otherwise innocuous. Extensive tests to reveal any links between the bees' physiological condition and pesticide sensitivity involved 6 hormone herbicides, 11 fungicides and 2 insecticides, all approved harmless for bees and functioning on them wholly or mainly as stomach poisons. As a rule bee sensitivity was measured as LD 50 per os, in smaller tests as percentage mortality. A…
