The effect of high concentration of iron (FeIII) on the speciation and mobility of arsenic (As) under strongly acidic conditions remains unclear. This work studied the redistribution and speciation of AsV and FeIII at Fe/As molar ratio of 1-14 and pH 1.5-2.0 in the dissolved, colloidal, and solid phases. Results showed that the elevated FeIII induced the decomposition of the precipitated poorly crystalline ferric arsenate by forming dissolved (< 3 kDa) and colloidal (3 kDa-0.1 µm) As-Fe complexes. South African rivers generally receive waste from inadequate wastewater infrastructure, mines, and farming activities, among others. The uMsunduzi River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is among these recipients with recorded poor to very poor water quality. In 2017 we reported the isolation and characterization of berkeleylactones A-H and A26771B from a coculture of two extremophilic Penicillium sp. isolated from an acid mine waste lake. Berkeleylactone A exhibited potent activity against several strains of multi-drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus anthracis. Hybrid triploid loaches (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) were generated from natural tetraploid and diploid loaches. We studied the gonads of parents and offspring from direct and reciprocal crosses through histological and transcriptome analyses. The triploid offspring had inferior ability to form sperm and egg cells compared with diploid forms. After sequencing the transcriptomes, 655,109,158 clean reads were obtained, and 62,821 unigenes and 178,962 transcripts were assembled. Orientia tsutsugamushi (Ott) is a causative agent of chigger-borne zoonosis, scrub typhus which is life threatening and highly pervasive illness in humans. In this report, we have mined and classified the proteins involved in pathways unique to Ott by using high-throughput computational techniques. A unique 30-year streamwater chemistry data set from a mineralized alpine watershed with naturally acidic, metal-rich water displays dissolved concentrations of Zn and other metals of ecological concern increasing by 100-400% (400-2000 μg/L) during low-flow months, when metal concentrations are highest. SO(4) and other major ions show similar increases. A lack of natural or anthropogenic land disturbances in the watershed during the study period suggests that climate change is the underlying cause. We have conducted a pathway-based analysis of genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data in order to identify genetic susceptibility factors for cervical cancer in situ.
