Inertial Motion Capture of Sagittal Kinematics Reveals Compensatory Strategies for Forward Loss of Balance in Individuals With Visual Impairment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Improving the ability of visually impaired (VI) people to react quickly to daily falls is crucial. However, it is no … kinematic data from the pelvis, hip, knee, and ankle joints during balance perturbations. The joint motion responses were divided into the perturbation phase and the response phase. Key parameters analyzed included peak angles, angular displacement, time to peak angle, response time, response velocity, and inter-joint coordination (e.g., pelvis/hip, pelv …

Intravoxel incoherent motion combined with conventional MRI for the differentiation of benign, intermediate, and malignant fibrous soft-tissue tumors.

BACKGROUND: Fibroblastic/myofibroblastic tumors are among the most common soft-tissue tumors (STTs) encountered clinically. Several magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features associated with malignant tumors overlap with benign tumors, making differential diagnosis challenging. Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) is a valuable MRI technique for differentiating various tumors. This study aims to evaluate the abilities of conventional MRI and IVIM in differentiating benign, intermediate, and malignant fibrous STTs. METHODS: Fifty-five patients with fibrous STTs were prospectively enrolled, compr…

The Systolic Anterior Motion After Mitral Valve Repair: A Narrative Review of Current Therapeutic Algorithms in the Operating Room.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Systolic anterior motion (SAM) represents the displacement of the anterior mitral leaflet during ventricular systole toward the interventricular septum, causing an obstruction of the outflow tract. Most of the published data regards the primary SAM that is associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This review was focused on the management of SAM that occurs after mitral valve repair. METHODS: To perform an update about the SAM occurring after mitral valve repair, data published in the last 15 years (2010-2025) were revised. RESULTS: Out of the 354 publications that de…

Reliability and Validity of AI-Based Pose Estimation Algorithms for Assessing Lower-Limb Flexibility and Joint Range of Motion.

Muscle flexibility and joint range of motion (ROM) evaluation are essential for injury prevention and rehabilitation; however, conventional manual methods are limited in large-scale screening and self-monitoring because of examiner dependency and time constraints. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of AI-based pose estimation for lower-limb flexibility and ROM tests compared with conventional manual measurements. Twenty healthy volunteers (40 lower limbs; age 24.4 ± 2.6 years) underwent three flexibility tests-the Active Knee Extension Test (AKET), Modified Thomas Test (MTT), an…

Probing Supramolecular Motion with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Bioactive Scaffolds that Promote Neural Regeneration in the Central Nervous System.

Dynamics in supramolecular biomaterials have been recently identified as a critical feature in their in vivo performance based on cell signaling. This was originally observed in the context of peptide amphiphile (PA) assemblies that promote neural regeneration in the central nervous system, known to be an enormous challenge. Specifically, enhanced supramolecular motion controlled by the peptide sequence was found to reverse paralysis after trauma to the spinal cord, whereas slower dynamics failed to attain a similar outcome. Here, we report that the most bioactive large filamentous assemblies─…

NMR relaxation dispersion reveals an order of magnitude range of acid loop motions in protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B.

Motion of the active site acid loop is critical for the proper function of the enzyme, protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B). To investigate the motion of this loop, we incorporated 7-fluorotryptophan at residue 179 (7F-Trp) near the hinge of the acid loop - replacing the naturally occurring tryptophan at this position. Control experiments show identical kcat and Km values for for WT and 7F-Trp enzymes and 15N HSQC experiments show minimal chemical shift changes caused by the incorporation of fluorotryptophan into this enzyme. We then investigated the conformational motions of the acid loop …

Design and visual servo control of a three-axis piezo-flexural micro/nano-manipulator with suppressed coupling motions.

Compliant-mechanism-based precision positioning stages are widely employed in micro/nano manipulation applications. However, cross-coupling motions are major sources of positioning errors, particularly in multi-axis, multi-stage systems. Here, we develop a visual sensing-based compliant dual-stage nano-manipulator driven by piezoelectric actuators for decoupled motion control. It comprises a XY stage for lateral motion and a Z stage for axial motion, both designed using symmetrical four-bar flexure mechanisms. The load-displacement relationships of both stages were analyzed theoretically and t…

Anti-directional segmental motion during flexion and extension in the adolescent thoracolumbar spine: a normative study of 166 participants.

PURPOSE: Anti-directional segmental motion has been documented in the cervical spine but never quantified in the thoracolumbar region. We aimed to determine its prevalence and determinants in adolescents and test its independence from coronal deviation. METHODS: Idiag M360 data from 166 adolescents (103 males, 63 females; 14.4 ± 0.9 years) were retrospectively analysed. Segmental angles (Th1/2–L5/S1) in upright, flexion and extension were recorded. Anti-directional motion was defined as segmental movement opposite to the intended trunk direction. Bonferroni-corrected correlations, kyphosis ter…

myoActivation® for Chronic Pain Care That Changes the Biotensegral Properties of the Human Body: A Motion Laboratory Case Report.

The human body is a biotensegral structure capable of bending and twisting in multiple directions as a functional, integrated movement unit, while maintaining balance and an ability to return to any pre-movement position. Myofascial dysfunction caused by soft tissue stiffness - muscles in sustained contraction, tethered skin, scars, or anomalous fascial tension - can affect the whole fascial continuum, leading to mobility impairment and chronic pain. Myofascial dysfunction is not just a local phenomenon, as the range of motion at one skeletal articulation may affect the whole system. myoActiva…

Accuracy of motion quantification in dynamic CT images of the wrist joint across multiple CT vendors: A phantom study.

BACKGROUND: Four-dimensional computed tomography (4D CT) allows dynamic assessment of wrist kinematics and offers a non-invasive alternative for evaluating ligament instability. However, insufficient temporal resolution and differences in acquisition or reconstruction protocols may introduce motion-related artifacts that affect quantitative analysis. As these artifacts can mimic pathological carpal motion, measurement error must be quantified to distinguish true pathology from methodological error. Therefore, systematic evaluation of motion quantification across different CT systems and acquis…

Autistic and non-autistic children's perceptual decision-making in visual orientation and motion tasks and the effect of task instructions.

Diffusion decision models (DDMs) offer the potential to go beyond standard accuracy and response-time indices to better understand perceptual decision-making in autism. One unanswered question is whether autistic participants can flexibly adjust the speed and accuracy of their decision-making according to task demands. Across two preregistered studies, 50 autistic and 50 non-autistic children aged 6-14 years completed a visual orientation task with no explicit instructions to be fast or accurate, and a visual motion task under both speed-emphasis and accuracy-emphasis instructions. These studi…
