Anxiety Trajectories in Mandibular Third Molar Surgery in Relation to Surgical Timing and Personality Traits.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare changes in dental and state anxiety across four assessment stages between patients undergoing same-session and scheduled mandibular third molar surgery and to explore whether Big Five personality traits moderated these changes. MATERIAL & METHODS: This observational study included 69 patients (same-session, n = 36; scheduled surgery, n = 33), with surgical timing determined by patient preference. Before the surgical timing decision (T0), participants completed STAI-Trait, TIPI, MDAS, and STAI-State. MDAS and STAI-State assessments were repeated after …

The Neural Basis of Personality Styles Effect on Depression: Brain Structure and Multivariate Pattern Study.

Advancements in functional MRI have linked neurostructural and functional architecture to personality traits, but few studies focus on personality styles. This study examines 99 patients with moderate to severe depression and 97 matched controls, categorised into four personality styles using the Eysenck personality questionnaire. The study aims to identify behavioural and neurological differences between depressed and control groups. An SVM algorithm was used to differentiate between these groups within the same personality styles. Results indicated that the depression group exhibited lower g…

Association between pet ownership and mental health in university students with borderline personality disorder symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 9.7% of university students exhibit symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD), characterized by disturbed self-identity, low self-esteem, and emotion dysregulation. Caring for a pet may enhance self-esteem and provide a sense of purpose, potentially benefiting those with BPD. METHODS: This study aimed to explore the relationship between pet ownership and mental health in 346 university students with BPD symptoms. Participants were classified as pet owners or non-pet owners. Mental health outcomes were assessed using validated self-report instruments, including…

Relationship between personality, memory complaints and episodic memory in young, middle-aged and older adults.

Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between episodic memory, memory complaints, and personality traits (openness to experience and neuroticism) as a function of age. Using a cross-sectional design with a multimodal assessment of episodic memory, we compared three groups of adults (young, middle-aged, and older). We examined age effects on both objective and subjective measures of memory, as well as on openness and neuroticism. Our results revealed an age effect only on the objective measures. Furthermore, associations between memory and personality differed by age group. In young a…

Personality Traits and Psychological Well-Being: Association Within the "Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra" (SUN) Cohort.

Psychological well-being (PWB) is a core component of mental health influenced by personality; however, most prior research focused on subjective well-being and normal-range personality traits. Less is known about the longitudinal role of maladaptive personality traits in shaping eudaimonic well-being. This study examined prospective associations between maladaptive personality domains and subsequent PWB in the SUN cohort. Personality traits were assessed at the 16-year follow-up using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Abbreviated Form (PID-5-BF). PWB was evaluated 2 years later using Ryff's…

Examining suicidal thoughts and behaviors across levels of personality functioning: A generalized additive model approach.

Suicide is a leading cause of death among emerging adults in the United States. Despite decades of research attempting to target risk factors, our ability to predict suicide remains insufficient. The objective of our examination was to investigate the utility of Criterion A of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders in predicting suicide outcomes by identifying the level-specific contribution of levels of personality functioning (LPF) to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. To address our research questions, we employed generalized additive modeling in subsamples of 145 young adults endors…

Personality Traits Predict Weight Loss Following Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty: A Cohort Study with External Validation.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a safe and effective treatment for obesity, but weight loss varies widely among patients. Personality traits may influence behavioral adherence after bariatric interventions. We evaluated whether Big Five personality traits predict weight loss after ESG and validated findings across two demographically distinct cohorts. METHODS: Two retrospective cohorts were analyzed. The primary cohort included self-pay patients who underwent ESG at a tertiary center in New York (2013–2019). The external cohort included predominantly uninsured or underinsur…

Examining Associations Between Low MMPI-3 Disconstraint Scale Scores and Facets of Obsessive-Compulsive Personality.

The Personality Psychopathology Five (PSY-5) trait Disconstraint is a personality dimension associated with behavioral control. Conceptualizations of this construct posit under-controlled, antisocial personality and over-controlled, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) features to manifest at its high and low poles, respectively. Robust empirical support has been reported for the posited high-end manifestations of this trait, as measured across versions of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) by the Disconstraint (DISC) scale. Empirical findings related to low-end…

Exploring Personality Traits Associated with Reproductive Success in Captive Female Alpine Musk Deer (Moschus chrysogaster).

Animal personalities, reflecting consistent individual behavioral differences, are increasingly recognized as key factors influencing fitness. However, their role in the reproductive success of endangered ungulates remains poorly understood. In this study, 17 personality traits, including "Clumsy", "Dominant", "Vigilant", "Affiliative" and so on, were assessed in 123 adult female captive Alpine musk deer (Moschus chrysogaster) using a scale-based personality rating method. We explored the relationships between these personality traits and reproductive fitness indicators, including litter size,…

Burnout, Covert Narcissism, and Personality Traits: The Need to Distinguish Empathy Domains in Medical Residents.

Background/Objectives: Identifying consistent patterns across empathy domains can help clinicians understand how empathy relates to burnout, covert narcissism, and other personality traits, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of clinical training. We examined empathy and assessed whether burnout, covert narcissism, and other personality traits show consistent associations across empathy domains. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 213 medical residents from a teaching and public tertiary care facility in Mexico. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Hypers…

Influence of the Big Five personality traits on intensive therapy adherence within people with aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Guideline-based aphasia rehabilitation recommends intensive speech and language therapy, yet people with aphasia in German-speaking countries often receive substantially lower doses. Personality traits predict adherence in chronic disease, but their relevance for aphasia care is unclear. We examined associations between Big Five traits and therapy frequency and explored trait links to reported reasons for non-guideline-based care. METHODS: From January to April 2024 we conducted a cross-sectional survey on patient-reported reasons for insufficient therapy. Overall, 260 individuals…

Patients' perspective on an optimal therapeutic alliance; facilitating engagement in treatment of antisocial personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: While the knowledge about developing an effective therapeutic alliance (TA) with patients diagnosed with an antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is growing, little is known from patients' perspective. Given the important role of TA in therapy outcomes, a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to a strong TA is essential. This study aims to expand current knowledge by exploring the experiences and preferences of patients with ASPD regarding TA development. METHOD: A qualitative research design was employed using reflective thematic analysis. Fifteen in-depth interviews w…

Narcissistic Traits and Narcissistic Personality Disorder in Dermatology With a Focus on Body-Dysmorphic Disorder.

Narcissistic personality disorder has experienced intense attention in recent years, however, only scant reports illluminate this topic in consideration of skin and aesthetic care. Contrary to popular belief, the central element of narcissistic personality disorder is fragile self-esteem, fear of shame and abandonment. Patients compensate by relying on external reinforcements and drawing attention to themselves, in which they demand the admiration of others. We often encounter cases in which narcissistic pathology is present, particularly, in the realm of aesthetic care. Narcissistic personali…

Treatment Outcomes for Co-Occurring Borderline Personality Disorder and Substance Use Disorders: A Systematic Review.

Objective: Almost half of patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) have a co-occurring substance use disorder (SUD). Patients with co-occurring BPD and SUD have poorer treatment outcomes, including lower rates of BPD remission and higher rates of substance-related harms. This systematic review aimed to evaluate existing treatments for co-occurring BPD and SUD. Methods: A systematic search was conducted using PsycINFO, Medline, PubMed, and Embase from inception to December 5, 2023. Selected studies assessed psychological or pharmacological interventions for patients with co…
