Proposed Clinical Algorithm for Pleuroparenchymal Fibroelastosis (PPFE).

Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE) is characterized by fibrosis involving the pleura and subpleural lung parenchyma, predominantly in the upper lobes. As PPFE appears to occur in patients with heterogeneous etiologies, the disease course is thus also heterogenous, with some patients showing rapid progression while others have slow progression. Therefore, it is very difficult to predict prognosis with PPFE. Needless to say, this problematic matter has influenced the treatment strategy of PPFE patients. In fact, until now no evidence has been shown for use in creating an appropriate managem

Engineering modeling of traffic noise in shielded areas in cities.

A computational study of road traffic noise in cities is presented. Based on numerical boundary-element calculations of canyon-to-canyon propagation, an efficient engineering algorithm is developed to calculate the effect of multiple reflections in street canyons. The algorithm is supported by a room-acoustical analysis of the reverberant sound fields in the source and receiver canyons. Using the algorithm, a simple model for traffic noise in cities is developed. Noise maps and exposure distributions of the city of Amsterdam are calculated with the model, and for comparison also with an engine

Auditory filters and the benefit measured from spectral enhancement.

Algorithms designed to improve speech intelligibility for those with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) by enhancing peaks in a spectrum have had limited success. Since testing of such algorithms cannot separate the theory of the design from the implementation itself, the contribution of each of these potentially limiting factors is not clear. Therefore, psychophysical paradigms were used to test subjects with either normal hearing or SNHL in detection tasks using well controlled stimuli to predict and assess the limits in performance gain from a spectrally enhancing algorithm. A group of norma

Foundation artificial intelligence models for health recognition by use of face photographs (FAHR-Face): a model development and validation study.

BACKGROUND: Facial appearance offers a non-invasive window into health. We built Foundation Artificial Intelligence for Health Recognition-Face (FAHR-Face), a foundation model trained on more than 40 million facial photographs and fine-tuned it for two distinct tasks: biological age estimation (FAHR-FaceAge) and survival prediction (FAHR-FaceSurvival). METHODS: FAHR-FaceAge underwent two-stage, age-balanced fine-tuning on ten public image datasets; FAHR-FaceSurvival was fine-tuned on 34 363 photographs of patients with cancer. Model robustness (cosmetic surgery, make-up, pose, and lighting) a

DFT and machine learning-assisted investigation of transition metal-doped γ-graphyne for DNA rare base sensing.

BACKGROUND: The development of high-performance biosensor materials for the selective detection of rare DNA bases is of great significance. Transition metal doping provides an effective strategy for regulating the electronic properties and adsorption behavior of two-dimensional carbon-based materials. However, the influence of different transition metals on the adsorption selectivity of rare DNA bases remains unclear. METHODS: In this study, the adsorption behavior of five rare DNA bases, including cytosine (Cyt), 5-methylcytosine (5meCyt), 5-carboxylcytosine (5caCyt), 5-formylcytosine (5fCyt

A serum proteomics-based predictive model for steroid-resistant immune checkpoint inhibitor associated myocarditis.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitor-associated myocarditis (ICIAM) is one of the immune-related adverse events (irAEs) with low incidence but extremely high mortality. High-dose glucocorticoid pulse therapy remains the recommended initial treatment for patients with ICIAM. However, an inadequate response to corticosteroid therapy is observed in some patients, who are subsequently classified as having steroid-resistant immune checkpoint inhibitor-associated myocarditis (srICIAM). Early combination of second-line immunosuppression may represent an effective therapeutic strategy. However, Bio

Assessing the diagnostic value of hemodynamic distinctions between axillary lymph nodes and adjacent vessels in breast cancer axillary lymph node metastasis via breast magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Axillary lymph node metastasis (ALNM) is pivotal for breast cancer treatment and prognosis. Invasive tests may carry complications, while non-invasive methods like physical examination have poor accuracy. Existing AI-based models rely mostly on tumor-centric features. However, metastatic lymph nodes show neoangiogenesis and altered hemodynamics, leading to time-intensity curve (TIC) profiles similar to those of adjacent vessels. This study aimed to quantify these hemodynamic disparities from dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) and enhance ALNM prediction

CCDC6, a ferroptosis-related gene, modulates stemness features of pancreatic cancer cells in vitro.

OBJECTIVE: Pancreatic cancer (PC) poses a significant threat to patient quality of life. Ferroptosis, a novel form of non-apoptotic cell death, is implicated in pancreatic tumorigenesis and therapy resistance. This study aims to identify key ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) as prognostic biomarkers, to construct a risk model for predicting patient outcomes, and to explore the underlying biological mechanisms. METHODS: We integrated transcriptomic and single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data to develop a prognostic model. We used cross-validation across three machine learning algorithms to

Development of a precise saliva-based epigenetic clock using a six-CpG-marker panel.

Saliva, a frequently encountered biological specimen in forensic investigations, has great potential to provide critical leads if the donor's age can be accurately estimated. This study aimed to develop a precise epigenetic clock for predicting age by identifying the most highly informative CpG sites derived from saliva. Using genome-wide 850K methylation array data from saliva samples of 76 Han Chinese individuals, we initially selected 33 candidate CpG sites based on correlation analyses and an extensive literature review. We then applied a multi-stage feature selection process, performing 2

Multi-source eXplainable Artificial Intelligence for monitoring and interpretation of marine scrubber washwater quality from full-scale vessel data.

Marine Scrubbers enable ships to achieve full compliance with sulphur emission limits by effectively removing SOX from exhaust gases, in line with the requirements set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) under MARPOL Annex VI, considering both gas and washwater quality standards. This technology represents a reliable and widely adopted solution for reducing atmospheric emissions. However, its operation generates washwater streams that require careful monitoring. Key parameters, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, turbidity, and pH, are affected by interacting operational,

Integrated Assessment of Stress Hyperglycemia and Glycemic Variability for Mortality Prediction in Non-St-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction and St-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction: A Glycometabolic Phenotype-Stratified Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Precise risk stratification in myocardial infarction (MI) remains challenging, particularly when integrating acute dysglycemia with chronic metabolic status. Prior evaluations of stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) and glycemic variability (GluCV) have seldom accounted for underlying glucose metabolic phenotypes, potentially obscuring their prognostic utility in distinct MI subtypes. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we identified 3628 non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and 825 ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients from the Medica
