MDMA ("Ecstasy") abuse and high-risk sexual behaviors among 169 gay and bisexual men.

OBJECTIVE: The authors explored the association between abuse of 3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, or "Ecstasy") and high-risk sexual behaviors among gay and bisexual men. METHOD: An anonymous questionnaire was completed by 169 gay and bisexual men at three New York City dance clubs. The questionnaire covered demographic indices, use of MDMA and other drugs, and history of high-risk sexual behaviors. RESULTS: About one-third of the respondents reported MDMA use at least monthly. MDMA use was strongly and significantly associated with a history of recent unprotected anal intercourse.

The effects of physical abuse on children's social relationships.

Social behavior and peer status of 87 physically abused 8-12-year-old urban children were compared with those of 87 case-matched nonmaltreated classmates. Peer nominations and peer ratings were collected in classrooms, social networks were assessed by child interview, family variables were assessed by interviewing mothers, and behavior problems were rated by parents and teachers. Significant findings were that abused children had lower peer status and less positive reciprocity with peers chosen as friends; they were rated by peers as more aggressive and less cooperative and by parents and teac

Behavioral contagion in sibships.

A behavior is "contagious" if one person is more likely to exhibit it when a relevant other person has already done so. In this sense, behavioral contagion is commonly thought to contribute to many social problems, such as drug abuse and teenage promiscuity. In this paper we focus on behavioral contagion in sibships. Borrowing a model from the theory of contagious diseases, we show that contagion will cause prevalence to increase with sibship size. This model also allows us to estimate the magnitude of the contagious factor relative to non-contagious factors. Finally, we develop two statistica

Disguised countertransference in institutions.

The manifest reason for the hospitalization of psychiatric patients is that someone decides that they are in danger of suicide or homicide, or that they are unable sufficiently to care for or manage themselves. From another perspective, however, hospitalization can be understood as a consequence of limitations on the part of the family, the community, or the therapist in managing the affects generated in relation to these patients' behavior and communications. In other words, it is possible that patients may be hospitalized primarily because people in their lives (and often they themselves) ca

Type A behavior in women: a review.

This review focuses on characteristics of the Type A behavior pattern in women in studies of demographic characteristics, physiological responses, laboratory performance, and personality. With some exceptions, these characteristics parallel those previously described for Type A men. The incidence of Type A behavior in the United States is comparable for men and women when socioeconomic factors are controlled. Type A behavior in women is positively correlated with socioeconomic status, occupation, education, and incidence of coronary heart disease. Type A women tend to show greater autonomic ar

Polynomial lattices for the BIKE cryptosystem.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Severe hypoglycemia (SH) is a major complication in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The multifactorial etiology of T1DM highlights the need for predictive tools that integrate clinical, behavioral, and technological factors. This study aimed to develop and evaluate machine learning (ML) models for predicting SH by incorporating hypoglycemia problem-solving ability, diabetes technology, and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) indices. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed data from 247 adults with T1DM (mean age 50.4 ± 13.7 years; 38.1% male; glycosylated hemoglobi

Effects of feeding behavior training on sensory processing and developmental areas in children with cerebral visual impairment: a randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effects of feeding behavior training on feeding behavior, sensory processing, and developmental outcomes in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and cerebral visual impairment (CVI). METHODS: This study included 40 children aged 48–60 months diagnosed with CP and CVI who had feeding behavior problems. Participants were randomly assigned to either an intervention group (n = 20) or a control group (n = 20). Both groups received sensory integration training twice weekly in 40-minute sessions over a 12-week period. Additionally, the intervention group received feeding b

Prenatal Exposure to Delta 9-Tetrahydrocannabinol and Child Neurodevelopment: A Critical Windows Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To identify critical windows of prenatal exposure to delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and child neurodevelopment. STUDY DESIGN: We followed 460 mother-child pairs participating in the Healthy Start study through age 5 years. Δ9-THC and its metabolites were measured at about 17 weeks' gestation (n=460) and about 27 weeks' gestation (n=434) in maternal serum, and at birth via cord blood (n=238). At age 5 years, behavior was assessed via Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and cognition was assessed via NIH Toolbox. For each outcome, we fit a generalized estimating equation model wit

Impact of the Triple D Method on Conflict Management and Workplace Engagement.

BACKGROUND: Although nurses' attitudes toward teamwork and work-related well-being have been explored, evidence is limited on the impact of a team-based method to manage interpersonal conflicts among nursing staff members. LOCAL PROBLEM: Nursing leaders on a 20-bed critical care service unit at a large teaching hospital in the southwestern United States received increasing reports of interpersonal conflicts between direct care staff members. They chose to address this problem by acknowledging the incivility and implementing improvement initiatives. METHODS: This project, which followed a pla

Postpartum maternal bonding problems relate to aberrant neural processing of infant emotions: Results of an adapted fMRI emotional GoNoGo task.

Maternal bonding refers to the unique emotional connection between a mother and her baby that gradually develops during the peripartum period. However, 3-24% of women report bonding problems (BP), often accompanied by constraints for the mother-infant relationship, but not always depression, with consequences for child development. Our present study investigates the neural and behavioral patterns that underlie the processing of emotional infant stimuli at 3 months postpartum, with an additional exploratory perspective over the 1st year postpartum parallel to a neurofeedback intervention that t

Characterization and validation of a spontaneous acute and protracted oxycodone withdrawal model in male and female mice.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a serious health problem that may lead to physical dependence, in addition to affective disorders. Preclinical models are essential for studying the neurobiology of and developing pharmacotherapies to treat these problems. Historically, chronic morphine injections have most often been used to produce opioid-dependent animals, and withdrawal signs indicative of dependence were precipitated by administering an opioid antagonist. In the present studies, we have developed and validated a model of dependence on oxycodone (a widely prescribed opioid) during spontaneous w
