In vitro development of the Autonomous Colonoscope Robot System (ACRS) for fully automated colonoscope insertion.

BACKGROUND: In the field of colonoscopy, robotic systems have been developed to support or replace human operators due to a shortage of trained endoscopists. We developed the Autonomous Colonoscope Robot System (ACRS), based on the Endoscopic Operation Robot version 4, to evaluate whether expert-derived operational data can enable autonomous colonoscope insertion. METHODS: ACRS was trained using insertion data obtained from an expert endoscopist operating a standardized colonoscopy training model. Automated insertions were evaluated using Pattern 1 of the model, a highly controlled configurat

Abdominal compartment syndrome after robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS) diaphragm plication.

Diaphragm plication is an effective treatment for diaphragmatic paralysis, in which the affected diaphragm is sutured in place. Robotic-assisted thoracoscopic (RATS) diaphragm plication combines the advantages of standard open thoracotomy and conventional thoracoscopic technique, gaining popularity as a less invasive alternative to improve the overall lung function. We present a case, to our knowledge, of the first described instance of abdominal compartment syndrome in the literature following RATS diaphragmatic plication. Abdominal compartment syndrome potentially developed as a consequence

Enabling non-microsurgeons to perform supermicrovascular anastomosis using a robotic assistant: A preclinical study.

UNLABELLED: Supermicrosurgery is an advanced technique that enables the reconstruction and transplantation of tissues by anastomosing blood vessels and nerves measuring 0.3–0.8 mm in diameter using specialized microscopes. This intricate procedure is mastered by only a select few plastic surgeons. However, the potential applications of this technology are widespread, including reconstructive surgery after resection of malignant tumors, organ transplantation, and treatment of lymphedema; therefore, more surgeons need to learn such procedures. This study demonstrated that novice operators withou

Effects of Bilateral Robotic Arm Training in Stroke Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Objectives: Bilateral robotic arm training (BRT) may enhance poststroke motor recovery by reducing interhemispheric inhibition and promoting bilateral motor network engagement. However, previous reviews have often pooled bilateral and unilateral robotic approaches, potentially masking differential effects. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the effects of BRT with those of unilateral robotic training (URT) and conventional rehabilitation on upper-limb motor function after stroke. Methods: Randomized controlled trials were identified through systematic searches of major electroni

Robotic Partial Nephrectomy for Isthmic RCC in a Horseshoe Kidney With Aberrant Aortic Arterial Supply.

We report robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy for isthmic clear cell renal cell carcinoma in a horseshoe kidney with aberrant aortic arterial supply. Intraoperative management utilized indocyanine green-guided near-infrared fluorescence imaging, intraoperative ultrasonography, and ligation of aberrant arterial branches supplying the mass. Pathology demonstrated a 4.6-cm WHO/ISUP grade 3 clear cell RCC, pathologic stage pT1b with negative surgical margins. Postoperative recovery was uncomplicated with preserved renal function and no recurrence at 6 months. This case highlights the importance o

A Modified Delphi UK Consensus to Develop a Surgical Safety Checklist for Transoral Robotic Surgery.

OBJECTIVES: The utilisation of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has grown in popularity over recent years with wide applications for both benign and malignant disease. It is important to recognise that the introduction of robotic surgery inserts a new variable into an already error-prone healthcare service that has a high preventable adverse event rate. Surgical safety checklists (SSC) have been well established in recent years and demonstrated to improve outcomes and reduce complications. This study aims to introduce a novel SSC designed for use specifically in operating theatres for cases us

AI-driven actuation-compatible tracking for closed-loop navigation of miniature robots in vivo.

Miniature wireless magnetic robots (MWMRs) hold immense potential for minimally invasive interventions. Real-time tracking of MWMRs is essential for precise in vivo navigation but remains challenging. Tracking MWMRs via their emitted magnetic signals offers a viable solution, yet it has been limited to centimeter-scale robots because isolating weak MWMR signals from overwhelming actuation-induced interference becomes increasingly difficult with miniaturization. Here, we present an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven tracking system to overcome these challenges, enabling precise localization of
