Chinese medicine pattern differentiation and its implications for clinical practice.

Chinese medicine practitioners apply the differentiation reasoning for decision-making. The wide scope of Chinese medicine intervention provides coverage of methods and techniques with applications to primary, secondary and tertiary levels of prevention. The rapid evolution of mathematical and computational techniques allowed the implementation of several models for pattern differentiation that were tested for several physiologic systems. Concurrently, it is argued that pattern differentiation might improve the efficacy of either traditional or conventional medical interventions. This article

Re-thinking wastewater landscapes: combining innovative strategies to address tomorrow's urban wastewater treatment challenges.

Most major cities worldwide face urban water management challenges relating to drinking supply, stormwater and wastewater treatment, and ecological preservation. In light of climate change and finite natural resources, addressing these challenges in sustainable ways will require innovative solutions arising from interdisciplinary collaboration. This article summarizes five major urban water management strategies that bridge the fields of engineering, ecology, landscape architecture, and urban planning. A conceptual implementation of these strategies is demonstrated through a design for a small

Efficient biodegradation of cyanide and ferrocyanide by Na-alginate beads immobilized with fungal cells of Trichoderma koningii.

Cyanide or metal cyanide contaminations have become serious environmental and food-health problems. A fungal mutant of Trichoderma koningii, TkA8, constructed by restriction enzyme-mediated integration, has been verified to have a high cyanide degradation ability in our previous study. In this study, the mutant cells were entrapped in sodium-alginate (Na-alginate) immobilization beads to degrade cyanide and ferrocyanide in a liquid mineral medium. The results showed that the fungus in immobilization beads consisting of 3% Na-alginate and 3% CaCl2 could degrade cyanide more efficiently than a n

Left posterior auditory-related cortices participate both in speech perception and speech production: Neural overlap revealed by fMRI.

Recent neuroimaging studies and neuropsychological data suggest that there are regions in posterior auditory cortex that participate both in speech perception and speech production. An outstanding question is whether the same neural regions support both perception and production or whether there exist discrete cortical fields subserving these functions. Previous neurophysiological studies suggest that there is indeed regional overlap between these systems, but those studies used a rehearsal task to assess production. The present study addressed this question in an event-related fMRI experiment

A bitter pill to swallow: nonadherence with prophylactic antibiotics during the anthrax attacks and the role of private physicians.

To generate recommendations for improving adherence to public health advice during public health crises, we conducted semi-structured interviews with employees at the Brentwood Road Postal Facility and on Capitol Hill to identify key themes associated with decisions to adhere to recommended antibiotic prophylaxis during the 2001 anthrax attacks. Factors used in deciding to adhere to recommended prophylactic antibiotics and concerns about the official response were similar in Brentwood and Capitol Hill employees, and in adherent and nonadherent participants. All participants used multiple sourc

[The pathologic system].

The pathological system (PS) is a new pathological integration originating from the primary and secondary altered CNS structure, whose activity has a dysadaptive or direct pathogenic significance for the body. An important role in the formation of PS is played by hyperactive CNS structure which acquires the role of a pathological determinant. Disturbances in the inhibitory mechanisms of CNS structures involved in the PS and enhanced excitability of their neurons promote the formation of PS. Negative feedbacks in PS are ineffective due to the competence of inhibitory mechanisms in the determina

Structural and molecular determinants of medial temporal lobe network vulnerability in aging and Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: The medial temporal lobe is organized into two memory-critical networks: the anterior-temporal and posterior-medial systems. While these systems show selective vulnerability to aging and Alzheimer's disease, the underlying structural and molecular determinants of this susceptibility remain unclear. We aimed to characterize the specific white matter pathways supporting these networks, investigate how amyloid-β and neuroinflammation interact to impact their integrity, and determine if structural changes relate to functional connectivity alterations. METHODS: In 88 cognitively unimpa

Recent advances in three-dimensional nanoflower-based membrane engineering for water and wastewater treatment: from fundamental mechanisms to scale-up.

Three-dimensional (3D) nanoflower (NF)-based membranes have recently emerged as a promising platform for advanced water and wastewater treatment owing to their hierarchical architectures, high surface-to-volume ratio, tunable physicochemical properties, and multifunctional performance. Unlike conventional nanomaterials, NF structures provide abundant exposed reactive sites, interconnected transport pathways, and enhanced interfacial interactions, enabling simultaneous improvements in adsorption, separation, catalytic activity, hydrophilicity, antifouling behavior, and contaminant selectivity.

Student nurse anesthetists' learning during clinical practice: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical practice is essential for student nurse anesthetists to integrate theory with practical skills; however, the demanding clinical environment can impact both stress and learning outcomes. Responsibilities and expectations differ across healthcare systems, and research in the Swedish context remains limited. Addressing this gap is essential for understanding how clinical practice contributes to the development of professional readiness and competence. This study, therefore, aimed to describe the learning experiences of students and newly graduated nurse anesthetists, with a f
