Evoked-response forward-masking functions in chinchillas with noise-induced permanent hearing loss.

Evoked-response forward-masking functions were measured by chronic electrodes in the inferior colliculus of the chinchilla before and after exposure to an intense tone that produced a permanent hearing loss. Before exposure, the forward-masking time constants ranged from 50 to 90 ms. After exposure, the forward-masking time constants increased significantly in the region of hearing loss, but not in regions where hearing was normal. The effect of the hearing loss on the time course of forward masking was most pronounced once the hearing loss exceeded 20-25 dB. These physiological changes in the

Effects of lesions to ascending noradrenergic neurones on performance of a 5-choice serial reaction task in rats; implications for theories of dorsal noradrenergic bundle function based on selective attention and arousal.

Five experiments examined the effects of destruction of the dorsal noradrenergic bundle (DNAB), arising in the locus coeruleus, both on brightness and spatial visual discrimination, and selective attention. An analogue o Leonard's 5-choice serial reaction task for human subjects was used. Hungry rats were trained to detect brief (0.5 sec) flashes of light presented randomly in one of 5 locations with a fixed intertrial interval of 5 sec, paced by the rat. Correct responses were rewarded with food and incorrect responses punished by time-out (darkness + delay). Following training to high levels

The clinical effect of lumbar puncture in normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Owing to all the difficulties involved in selecting patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus for shunt-operation, a cerebrospinal fluid-tap-test (CSF-TT) is introduced. Psychometric and motor capacities of the patients are measured before and after lumbar puncture and removal of 40-50 ml CSF. Patients fulfilling criteria for normal pressure hydrocephalus were compared to patients with dementia and atrophy shown by computed tomography. Normal pressure hydrocephalus patients showed temporary improvement after lumbar puncture. The extent of the temporary improvement appeared to be well correla

Simple reaction times to lateralized visual stimuli in a case of callosal agenesis.

Simple reaction times (RTs) of a young acallosal woman were measured using three different intensity levels of the visual stimulus. It was found that "'crossed" stimulus/hand combinations yielded finger RTs about 20 msec longer, on average, than "uncrossed" combinations. In addition, an inverse relation was found between stimulus intensity and the magnitude of this crossed/uncrossed difference in RT. It was also found that vocal RTs displayed a large advantage (18 msec) for right visual-field stimulation. It is suggested that the stimulus information in crossed finger reactions must cross the

LASCER Bode plots for normal, amblyopic, and stereoanomalous observers.

Indices of laterality, interocular response latency difference, and binocular summation derived from Bode plots (amplitude-versus-temporal frequency and phase lag-versus-temporal frequency) of cortical responses evoked by laser speckle (LASCER) are correlated with common tests used in clinical refraction. We evaluated eight normal observers and eleven observers with histories of amblyopia and/or stereoanomalies. We find that: (1) LASCER amplitude is reduced in the amblyopic eyes relative to the unaffected fellow eyes, (2) LASCER response latency is increased in the amblyopic eyes relative to t

Gating of somatosensory evoked potentials during different kinds of movement in man.

1. Somatosensory evoked potentials from electrical stimulation of the digital nerves of the right thumb have been recorded during the performance of various motor tasks in eight normal subjects. 2. The N20-P30 primary cortical response is only moderately affected by task context, while the P45-N55 secondary response is markedly 'gated' by movement of the stimulated digit. The late N140 vertex is variable. 3. In most subjects, active and passive movements are about equally effective in suppressing the secondary complex; but in one, passive movement has come to be rather less effective than acti

Recovery following intravenous sedation during dental surgery performed under local anesthesia.

Recovery of psychomotor and perceptual performance from two combinations of intravenous sedatives was assessed in 124 oral surgical patients undergoing third molar extractions under local infiltration anesthesia. Ninety-four patients in the experimental group received 15 mg of diazepam and 20 to 200 mg of methohexital intravenously on one occasion and 12.5 mg of diazepam, 20 to 200 mg of methohexital, and 0.1 mg of fentanyl intravenously on another occasion in a randomized, crossover design. Thirty patients in the control group received saline placebo intravenously during a single surgery. Bot

Should spikes be treated with equal weightings in the generation of spectro-temporal receptive fields?

Knowledge on the trigger features of central auditory neurons is important in the understanding of speech processing. Spectro-temporal receptive fields (STRFs) obtained using random stimuli and spike-triggered averaging allow visualization of trigger features which often appear blurry in the time-versus-frequency plot. For a clearer visualization we have previously developed a dejittering algorithm to sharpen trigger features in the STRF of FM-sensitive cells. Here we extended this algorithm to segregate spikes, based on their dejitter values, into two groups: normal and outlying, and to const

Cognitive impairment following sedative overdose.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with sedative overdose may have residual cognitive impairment at the time they are deemed medically cleared for discharge. Impairment could affect the performance of high-risk activities, including driving. The Trail Making Test is an alpha-numeric assessment that can be performed at the bedside to assess cognitive function. We examined whether there were differences in cognitive function when medically cleared between patients that overdosed on sedative and non-sedative drugs. METHODS: A prospective, observational study assessed cognitive function using the Trail Makin

Distributed and interactive brain mechanisms during emotion face perception: evidence from functional neuroimaging.

Brain imaging studies in humans have shown that face processing in several areas is modulated by the affective significance of faces, particularly with fearful expressions, but also with other social signals such gaze direction. Here we review haemodynamic and electrical neuroimaging results indicating that activity in the face-selective fusiform cortex may be enhanced by emotional (fearful) expressions, without explicit voluntary control, and presumably through direct feedback connections from the amygdala. fMRI studies show that these increased responses in fusiform cortex to fearful faces a

From symptom onset to care-seeking: a process-oriented mixed-methods study of prehospital delay in cerebral infarction.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral infarction (ischemic stroke) is a highly time-sensitive acute cerebrovascular event, yet prehospital delays in patients' accessing medical care remain prevalent across various countries and healthcare systems. Previous studies have primarily attributed delays to inadequate symptom recognition or barriers in healthcare accessibility, with limited systematic exploration of their formation mechanisms from a decision-making process perspective. METHODS: This study integrated the Self-Regulation Model and the three-stage delay model, employing an explanatory sequential mixed-m

From Theory to Practice: Use of Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders by Undergraduate Dental Students.

OBJECTIVES: The diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD) is a valid tool that fulfills the diagnostic requirements in terms of methodological considerations and clinical relevance. However, its utility in undergraduate dental education is lacking. Thus, this study evaluates undergraduate dental students' perception and experiences in using the DC/TMD assessment tool. METHODS: An exploratory sequential study design was used to assess the use of the DC/TMD assessment tool by undergraduate dental students in senior years at four institutions. Purposive, non-randomized samplin

Perceived intrusiveness of coercive measures: a Danish survey of mental health service users.

INTRODUCTION: Coercive measures (CM) are commonly used in mental health care. From a mental health service user perspective, CM are often associated with physical and psychological harm and a serious infringement on personal autonomy. Danish health legislation, therefore, adheres to principles requiring the use of the least intrusive CM. However, limited knowledge exists about service users' perceptions of what constitutes the least intrusive CM. PURPOSE: To survey mental health service users' perceptions of intrusiveness related to various CM and to identify which interventions they consider
