OBJECTIVE: To report a suicide attempt with an aspirin enema.
CASE SUMMARY: A patient presented to the emergency room after self-administering, in enema form, approximately 700 aspirin tablets dissolved in water. Over the next 12 hours the patient became progressively acidemic with eventual cardiac arrest and subsequent chronic hypoxic encephalopathy.
DISCUSSION: This patient's poor outcome was the result of retained aspirin products in the rectal vault combined with the failure to recognize the delayed absorption properties of rectally administered aspirin.

The effects of diazepam on antroduodenal motility, gastric pH and gastric emptying rate were investigated in 10 volunteers. Gastric emptying was assessed using paracetamol absorption and antroduodenal motility and pH by means of a perfused multilumen tube. Toxicity of cyanogenetic glucoside was studied with rats using synthesized D, L-mandelonitrile-beta-D-glucoside. Considering from blood cyanide level, the cause of death was presumed to be cyanide intoxication. Hydrolysis of cyanogenetic glucoside occurred mainly in small and large intestines. Intestinal adaptation by the growing rat to a low-calcium diet was studied by in situ perfusion of duodenum and ileum in vivo. Rats were fed diets containing either 1.2 or 0.02% Ca for 17-24 days. This article reviews the current literature describing the use of rectally administered antiepileptic drugs. Individual antiepileptic drugs are discussed in regard to efficacy, toxicity, and rate of absorption. Absorption occurs through passive diffusion; therefore, solutions are absorbed most quickly. Paraldehyde, diazepam, secobarbital, and valproic acid are used when rapid effect for termination of prolonged or serial seizures is desired. Valproic acid, lorazepam, carbamazepine, and phenytoin all can be used for maintenance therapy.

Direct detection of saponins in medicinal plants using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is reported in this paper. Crude dry plant powders were mixed with potassium bromide (KBr) powder and compressed to a thin pellet for infrared examination.
