Multiple domains of risk factors for first onset of depression in adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: First onsets of depression are especially common in adolescent females and often develop into chronic/recurrent illness. Surprisingly few studies have comprehensively evaluated multiple domains of etiologically-informative risk factors for first onset in adolescents from the community. We investigated whether clinical, cognitive, personality, interpersonal, and biological risk factors prospectively predict a first onset of depressive disorder (DD), and of DD with a chronic/recurrent course, in a community sample of adolescent girls. METHODS: 479 girls (13.5-15.5 years) with no his

Homocysteine levels and cardiovascular risk factors in children and adolescents: systematic review and meta-analysis.

CONTEXT: Studies have indicated that homocysteine levels are nontraditional markers for cardiovascular disease. The onset of atherosclerotic disease begins in childhood and adolescence; thus, prevention of its risk factors should occur early. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to summarize the association between high homocysteine levels and traditional cardiovascular risk factors in children and adolescents. DATA SOURCES: This systematic review and meta-analysis were developed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

An Effective Life-Sex-Emotions Course for Taiwanese Adolescents on Health Perceptions: A Cohort Study.

Aim: Adolescence is a time of transition from childhood to adulthood, when young people go through a number of vital physical and psychological developments. It is surprising yet unfortunate that the number of teenage suicide deaths and teenage infections of gonorrhea have increased over the years, becoming serious public health concerns in Taiwan. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an education course on teenagers' understanding of adolescence and their attitudes toward life, sex, gender equality, and mental health. Material and Methods: Participants were comprised of Taiw

Associations of DXA-measured abdominal adiposity with cardio-metabolic risk and related markers in early adolescence in Project Viva.

BACKGROUND: Increased visceral adipose tissue (VAT) precedes development of insulin resistance and dyslipidemia in adults. The associations of abdominal adiposity derived from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), including VAT, subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue (SAAT) and total abdominal adipose tissue (TAAT) with cardio-metabolic risk in adolescents are understudied. OBJECTIVES: We examined the cross-sectional associations of DXA-measured abdominal adiposity with cardio-metabolic risk and related markers in early adolescence (mean [SD] age 13.0 [0.7] years). METHODS: We collected dat

The enteric nervous system undergoes significant chemical and synaptic maturation during adolescence in mice.

Adolescence is a critical period of development. It is very likely that there is significant maturation of the enteric nervous system (ENS) of the gut during this stage of life, especially since there are substantial changes in factors known to influence the ENS including diet and microbiota during this time, but this remains unknown. To examine maturation of the ENS during adolescence, we performed immunohistochemistry using advanced microscopy and analytical methods to compare enteric neurons and glia of the duodenum and colon of mice taken prior to weaning with those of young adult mice. We

Factors associated with blood pressure disorders in Afro-descendant children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension (AH) is an emerging disease that has rapidly increased in the last decades throughout the world. The increase in blood pressure (BP) is observed with growth and development and, although the manifestation of the disease is rare in childhood and adolescence, its occurrence is increasing and the causes are likely to be from different combinations of factors. Afrodescendants have been consistently observed in many populations, including Brazil, which has the largest population of Afrodescendants outside Africa; nevertheless, data is scarce on the disease in children and a

Risky driving, mental health, and health-compromising behaviours: risk clustering in late adolescents and adults.

BACKGROUND: Health-compromising behaviours in adolescents and adults co-occur. Because motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and disability for these age groups, understanding the association between risky driving and other health-compromising behaviours is critical. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of data from a randomised controlled trial of an intervention for participants who screened positive for risky driving and problem drinking. Using baseline data, we examined relationships among conduct behaviour problems before and after age 15 years, depressive symptoms,

Smoking cessation in adolescents and effective strategies: a position paper.

Adolescent nicotine dependence represents a public health challenge, driven by the rapid evolution of tobacco products and by the unique neurobiological vulnerability of the developing brain to nicotine exposure. Clinically significant dependence may emerge after brief and intermittent use, often before adolescents self-identify as users, underscoring the need for proactive and systematic screening across all nicotine and tobacco product modalities. This position paper reviews the evidence on effective cessation strategies for adolescents and provides practical recommendations for clinicians a

Cerebellar pathway diffusion MRI measures are linked to core autism symptoms in early adolescents aged 9 to 11 years.

In this preregistered study, we used diffusion MRI (dMRI) to characterize the tissue properties of cerebellar pathways in 9-11-year-old early adolescents from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. We examined fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), and number of streamlines (NoS) across five cerebellar pathways-the inferior, middle, and superior cerebellar peduncles, the input and Purkinje fibers, and the parallel fibers-in adolescents with (n = 135) and without (n = 7276) a parent-reported ASD diagnosis. We further tested whether cerebellar dMRI measures differen
