Infectious medical waste (IMW) and disease transmission: A critical public health challenge in Africa and the global implications - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Infectious Medical Waste (IMW) from both human and animal healthcare sources have the potential to transmit diseases in human po … view. Our findings identified 11 diseases that are potentially transmissible via IMW. These include Anthrax, Crimean-congo haemorrhagic Fever, Ebola Virus Disease, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Lassa Fever, Measles, Monkeypox, Plague, and Rift Valley Fever. Disease transmission may occur via human contact with different classes o …

Intersectoral collaboration in zoonotic disease surveillance and response: A One Health study in the Greater Accra metropolitan area of Ghana.

The One Health (OH) approach is essential for preventing and managing zoonotic diseases through the promotion of intersectoral collaboration … Avian Influenza, Lassa fever and COVID-19 were the primary triggers of intersectoral collaboration. Anthrax, zoonotic tuberculosis and trypanosomiasis saw minimal intersectoral collaboration. Collaborative activities were mostly addressed through reactive and event-driven approaches focusing on case-specific data sharing, alerts in outbreak events, and co …

Genetic Sequencing of a Bacterial Pneumonia Vaccine Produced in 1916.

Background/Objectives: Bacterial vaccines were first developed and used in the late 1800s to prevent chicken cholera and anthrax. Bacterial pneumonia vaccines were widely used during the 1918 influenza pandemic, despite the influenza A/H1N1 virus not yet being identified. Studies showed that bacterial pathogens, including Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pyogenes, contributed significantly to fatal secondary bacterial pneumonias during the pandemic. In this study, we aimed to characterize the microbial composition of two ampules of a mixed bacterial influenza…

Adoption of veterinary vaccines, determining factors, and barriers in Southwest Ethiopia: Implications for livestock health and disease management strategies.

In Ethiopia, the use of veterinary vaccines to control animal diseases is an effective strategy. A study conducted in Southwest Ethiopia from October 2020 to October 2021 aimed to determine the adoption level of veterinary vaccines and factors affecting their use. The study used multistage random sampling to select districts and interviewed 476 farmers who had either adopted or not adopted the vaccines. The study found that certain diseases should be prioritized for vaccination to safeguard the health of cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry. These include anthrax (19.12 %), blackleg (17.65 %), fo…

Utilizing targeted integration CHO pools to potentially accelerate the GMP manufacturing of monoclonal and bispecific antibodies.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are effective therapeutic agents against many acute infectious diseases including COVID-19, Ebola, RSV, Clostridium difficile, and Anthrax. mAbs can therefore help combat a future pandemic. Unfortunately, mAb development typically takes years, limiting its potential to save lives during a pandemic. Therefore "pandemic mAb" timelines need to be shortened. One acceleration tool is "deferred cloning" and leverages new Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) technology based on targeted gene integration (TI). CHO pools, instead of CHO clones, can be used for Phase I/II clinical ma…

What Did We Miss? Analysis of Military Personnel Responses to an Open-Ended Question in a Post-Deployment Health Survey.

These surveys are … ific Navy experiences; experiences of poor leadership; administrative or organizational issues; the anthrax vaccine; and traumatic events/potentially morally injurious experiences. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that post-deployment health surveys should have questions about certain deployment experiences tailored by military service (i.e., Air Force, …

Zoonotic pathogens and diseases detected in Vietnam, 2020-2021.

Vietnam has been identified as a country at high-risk for emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic diseases. The government of Vietnam recognized five priority zoonoses, including highly pathogenic avian influenza, rabies, leptospirosis, anthrax, and Streptococcus suis, and established a framework for One Health investigation and response to these diseases. From July 2020 to February 2021, quantitative data of zoonoses were collected from an online survey in 61 of 63 provinces based on either clinical diagnosis or laboratory confirmation. The responses were followed up by using in-depth intervie…

Evaluation of the weekly disease surveillance system for epidemic-prone diseases in Makonde District, Zimbabwe 2020: a descriptive cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: the weekly disease surveillance system (WDSS) is a tool used to provide an early warning of potential public health threats in Zimbabwe. In 2020, Makonde District failed to detect an anthrax outbreak at one of its facilities, this untimely and poor response of the district increased morbidity. We evaluated the weekly disease surveillance system to determine reasons for missing outbreaks and determine the usefulness of the system in the detection of outbreaks. METHODS: we conducted descriptive cross-sectional study using updated Centres for Disease Control and Prevention guidelin…

Bacillus anthracis Phylogeography: New Clues From Kazakhstan, Central Asia.

This article describes Bacillus anthracis strains isolated in Kazakhstan since the 1950s until year 2016 from sixty-one independent events associated with anthrax in humans and animals. One hundred and fifty-four strains were first genotyped by Multiple Locus VNTR (variable number of tandem repeats) Analysis (MLVA) using 31 VNTR loci. Thirty-five MLVA31 genotypes were resolved, 28 belong to the A1/TEA group, five to A3/Sterne-Ames group, one to A4/Vollum and one to the B clade. This is the first report of the presence of the B-clade in Kazakhstan. The MLVA31 results and epidemiological data we…

Strategies for Validation of Inactivation of Viruses with Trizol® LS and Formalin Solutions.

INTRODUCTION: Inactivation of biological agents and particularly select agents has come under increased scrutiny since the US Army inadvertently shipped live anthrax both inside and outside the US, leading to more stringent regulations regarding inactivation. METHODS: Formalin and Trizol® LS were used to inactivate virus samples in complex matrices. Cytotoxic chemicals were removed using either desalting or concentrating columns or through dilution using HYPERFlasks. Efficacy of inactivation was evaluated either through plaque assay or immunofluorescence assay. RESULTS: All virus samples and…

Gene control of tyrosine kinase TIE2 and vascular manifestations of infections.

Ligands of the endothelial-enriched tunica interna endothelial cell kinase 2 (Tie2) are markedly imbalanced in severe infections associated with vascular leakage, yet regulation of the receptor itself has been understudied in this context. Here, we show that TIE2 gene expression may constitute a novel vascular barrier control mechanism in diverse infections. Tie2 expression declined rapidly in wide-ranging models of leak-associated infections, including anthrax, influenza, malaria, and sepsis. Forced Tie2 suppression sufficed to attenuate barrier function and sensitize endothelium to permeabil…
