[Possibilities and results of shortened hospital treatment in pediatric surgery (author's transl)].

2582 surgical operations on children - principally abdominal hernias and phimoses - are reported. Inpatient treatment required a stay of 3.2 days, 430 children were treated as outpatients. The 11 pediatricians working in the afflux area unanimously judged the shortened stay in hospital positive. Of the parents interviewed, only 1.3% did not agree with the short hospitalization and 4.8% disagreed with the outpatient therapy. The well-known psychic disturbances of small children by admission to hospital confirmed. The economic importance of a stay which can be reduced by 10 days compared with th

Acute Appendicitis at Stem Cell Infusion During Autologous Transplantation for HIV-Associated Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma: A Case Report.

Acute appendicitis is an exceptionally rare complication of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and represents a diagnostic challenge, since its presentation overlaps with conditioning-related gastrointestinal toxicity and neutropenic enterocolitis. Published data are limited to isolated case reports, and its occurrence during autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated lymphoma has not previously been described. We report the case of a 39-year-old man with HIV-associated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), non-germinal

Heavy metal - habitual licking of a lead tape as rare cause of chronic lead poisoning: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lead poisoning remains a major environmental health risk for children, as no safe blood lead concentration has been identified and even low-level exposure can cause neurocognitive, behavioral, cardiovascular and renal impairments. Although blood lead levels have declined substantially in high-income countries due to regulatory measures such as the elimination of leaded gasoline and stricter environmental controls, lead exposure continues to pose a significant global public health burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Moreover, uncommon exposure pathways still oc

Irrigation of abdomen with imipenem solution decreases surgical site infections in patients with perforated appendicitis: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Perforated appendicitis is one of the most common causes of acute abdomen requiring emergent surgery for immediate appendectomy and peritoneal cavity irrigation; however, the efficacy of irrigation with antibiotic solutions is controversial. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of imipenem solution irrigation on post-operative surgical site infections (SSIs), hospital length of stay, and hospital costs. We hypothesized that there would be lower rate of SSIs, a shorter hospital stay, and lower hospital cost in patients with perforated appendicitis who receiv

Romanian National Study on the Epidemiology of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and IBD-unclassified (IBD-U), are increasingly recognized across Eastern Europe, including Romania, where historical data indicated low incidence. Contemporary real-time epidemiological data for our country are scarce. This study evaluated the short-term frequency and epidemiological characteristics of IBD patients presenting to major Romanian gastroenterology centers. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional observational study over a 14-day period in November 2024 acr

Craniocervical instability after inadvertent neck hyperextension in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: a retrospective case series and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) are at risk of developing craniocervical instability (CCI). Iatrogenic causes of CCI in hEDS are underreported. We describe a case series of hEDS patients who developed CCI from routine neck hyperextension during common procedures (e.g., intubation for anesthesia, dental work). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case series of 8 adults (≥ 18 years old) with hEDS (2017 diagnostic criteria) who had no preoperative CCI symptoms but developed new CCI symptoms after a surgical procedure that persisted for at least 5 years. National surveillance of healthcare-associated infections in the UAE: first multisector report and benchmark analysis (2023).

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a major global patient safety concern, yet comprehensive national surveillance data remain limited in many regions, including the Middle East. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), prior efforts were restricted to selected surgical site infections (SSIs), with no unified framework capturing the full spectrum of HAIs. We aimed to establish the first national benchmark for HAIs across multiple healthcare sectors and infection types. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of national HAI surveillance data from 92 hospitals with ≥ 20

Microbiological spectrum and antimicrobial resistance patterns in pediatric acute appendicitis: implications for evidence-based empirical therapy.

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies in children, and timely empirical antimicrobial therapy is particularly important in complicated cases. However, antibiotic selection is increasingly challenged by regional variability in pathogen distribution and antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to characterize the microbiological spectrum and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of purulent specimens from pediatric patients with acute appendicitis and to provide evidence for optimized empirical therapy. METHODS: In this prospective observational study,
