Adult vaccination in India: A rapid review of current status & implementation challenges.

Background & objectives The expanded programme on immunization launched in India in 1978, with its focus on preventing six diseases in children (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, poliomyelitis, typhoid, and childhood tuberculosis), was widened in its scope in 1985-86. This new avtaar, the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), incorporated measles vaccine for children and rubella and adult diphtheria vaccines for pregnant women. We conducted this rapid review on adult immunization relevant for India, as recent COVID-19 experience revealed how newly emergent or re-emergent pathogens could have t

Pediatric healthcare worker perspectives on implementation of a secure firearm storage program: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Primary care-based secure firearm storage programs are well-positioned to prevent firearm-related injury, the leading cause of death for young people in the United States. While recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and US Surgeon General, these programs have yet to become routine practice. Our cluster randomized hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial studied implementation of a universal evidence-based secure firearm storage program, S.A.F.E. Firearm (Suicide and Accident Prevention through Family Education) across 30 clinics in two large health systems. S.A.F.E. Fir

Human Mercury Biomonitoring Under the Minamata Convention: Blood, Urine, Hair, and Tissue Biomarkers (2000-2026).

Mercury (Hg) is a globally ubiquitous environmental pollutant classified by the World Health Organization among the chemicals of major public health concern. It occurs as elemental mercury, inorganic mercury, and organic mercury, each with distinct toxicokinetics and target organs. Human exposure arises mainly from fish and seafood consumption. Additional important sources include dental amalgam restorations, occupational settings, mercury-containing skin-lightening cosmetics, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), and environmental remobilization of Hg naturally stored in soils and sed

Surprising pandemic experiences: A confrontation between principle-based and virtue ethics, and a plea for virtue ethics training for medical students and residents. A rudimentary outline of a four-step model.

BACKGROUND: In past years, physicians have, with a certain continuity, reported increasing numbers of burnout, depression and compassion fatigue in their daily practice. These problems were attributed, not only but also, to a loss of public trust and an increase in violent behaviour of patients and family members towards medical professionals in all walks of life. Recently, however, during the breakout of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, there were public expressions of appreciation and respect for health care workers that almost universally have been assessed as indic

Impact of a package of diagnostic tools, clinical algorithm, and training and communication on outpatient acute fever case management in low- and middle-income countries: protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The management of acute febrile illnesses places a heavy burden on clinical services in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Bacterial and viral aetiologies of acute fevers are often clinically indistinguishable and, in the absence of diagnostic tests, the 'just-in-case' use of antibiotics by many health workers has become common practice, which has an impact on drug-resistant infections. Our study aims to answer the following question: in patients with undifferentiated febrile illness presenting to outpatient clinics/peripheral health centres in LMICs, can we demonstrate

Assessing and responding to palliative care needs in rural sub-Saharan Africa: results from a model intervention and situation analysis in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: Palliative care is rarely accessible in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Partners In Health and the Malawi government established the Neno Palliative Care Program (NPCP) to provide palliative care in rural Neno district. We conducted a situation analysis to evaluate early NPCP outcomes and better understand palliative care needs, knowledge, and preferences. METHODS: Employing rapid evaluation methodology, we collected data from 3 sources: 1) chart review of all adult patients from the NPCP's first 9 months; 2) structured interviews with patients and caregivers; 3) semi-structured inter

Quality of work life among primary health care nurses in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Quality of work life (QWL) is defined as the extent to which an employee is satisfied with personal and working needs through participating in the workplace while achieving the goals of the organization. QWL has been found to influence the commitment and productivity of employees in health care organizations, as well as in other industries. However, reliable information on the QWL of primary health care (PHC) nurses is limited. The purpose of this study was to assess the QWL among PHC nurses in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A descriptive research design, namely a cross-

Awareness of hepatitis C knowledge among four high-risk populations in Xiamen, China: a cross-sectional study.

Introduction Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection remains a severe global public health challenge. Sufficient HCV knowledge among high-risk populations is essential to achieve the WHO 2030 goal of eliminating viral hepatitis. Comparative evidence on HCV knowledge awareness and its demographic determinants across men who have sex with men (MSM), drug users (DUS), female sex workers (FSW), and invasive procedure patients is scarce in Fujian Province. This study aimed to investigate the status of HCV knowledge awareness and explore its associated factors among the four high-risk populations in Xiame

Piloting the Inclusion of the Key Populations Unique Identifier Code in the South African Routine Health Information Management System: Protocol for a Multiphased Study.

BACKGROUND: The global community has set an ambitious goal to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Significant progress has been achieved in pursuing these objectives; however, concerns remain regarding the lack of disaggregated routine data for key populations (KPs) for a targeted HIV response. KPs include female sex workers, transgender populations, gay men and other men who have sex with men, people who are incarcerated, and people who use drugs. From an epidemiological perspective, KPs play a fundamental role in shaping the dynamics of HIV transmission due to specific behaviors.

Social Distancing to Avoid SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Cancer and Noncancer Patients.

BACKGROUND: Social distancing has been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to avoid exposure to SARS-CoV-2 ( Epidemiol Prev 2020;44:353-362).Cancer patients on or after active therapy seem to be more prone to COVID being symptomatic and life-threatening. When evaluating cancer patients' risk of acquiring COVID, it is essential to know the behavior of cancer patients that will affect their risk of exposure. However, it is not known to what degree social distancing is practiced by cancer patients compared with noncancer patients and what factors lead to the decision to

An estimation of the effect of finding nurses helpful on early breastfeeding exclusivity mediated via breastfeeding self-efficacy, using a counterfactual approach and G-computation.

BACKGROUND: Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for at least the first six months of life, however in South Africa only 32% of mothers are exclusively breastfeeding to six months and discontinuation happens early. Nurses are a key resource for promoting breastfeeding self-efficacy and thus exclusivity, yet mothers often report nurses to have poor attitudes, which deter health seeking behaviour. This study aimed to infer whether perceived support from nurses immediately postpartum was causally related to breastfeeding exclusivity, and specifically whether this effect was mediated via breastf

Social prescribing in primary care for people living with dementia: a qualitative exploration of different roles and services in England.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a global public health challenge with the number of people living with the condition rapidly rising. Social prescribing in primary care has emerged as a person-centred approach connecting individuals with community support. It is increasingly explored for its potential to support people with complex needs, yet its role in dementia care remains uncertain. This study aimed to explore current provision of social prescribing for people living with dementia across England, identifying relevant aspects for dementia care, with particular focus on generic and specialist service

Depressive symptoms and all-cause mortality among middle-aged and older people in China and associations with chronic diseases.

INTRODUCTION: It remains unclear whether depressive symptoms are associated with increased all-cause mortality and to what extent depressive symptoms are associated with chronic disease and all-cause mortality. The study aims to explore the relationship between depressive symptoms and all-cause mortality, and how depressive symptoms may, in turn, affect all-cause mortality among Chinese middle-aged and older people through chronic diseases. METHODS: Data were collected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). This cohort study involved 13,855 individuals from Wave 1 (

Gestational diabetes knowledge improves with interactive online training modules: a pre-post analysis.

BACKGROUND: The risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is up to 50% among women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). GDM also increases risks for pre-term birth, macrosomia, fetal hypoglycemia, and C-section delivery. Education for expectant mothers with GDM about nutrition, exercise, and the risks of developing T2DM after delivery enhances the probability of postpartum diabetes screening. However, the availability of diabetes education is limited. To bridge this gap, our team developed four training modules on GDM tailored for nurses and community health workers. This pilot s…
