Assessing the relationship between the rule of law and health-related indicators: Evidence from an ecological analysis of 120 countries.

OBJECTIVES: Health outcomes differ widely across countries, influenced by socioeconomic and institutional conditions. While social determinants are well studied, the role of legal and governance structures is less understood. Examining the rule of law may clarify how foundational institutions shape population health and health system performance. The aim of this study is to examine the association between the rule of law and key health outcomes, while accounting for other socioeconomic determinants. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional ecological study. METHODS: This study analyzed data from 120 co

Prehospital trauma systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs): a qualitative systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma-related morbidity and mortality has been shown to be disproportionately high in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Weak or fragmented prehospital systems are one of the aspects contributing significantly to the burden. Therefore, a clearer understanding of the barriers in prehospital trauma care is essential to guide improvements in care capacity for emergency situations in resource-limited settings. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Abstract and full-text screening will be done using Covidence across different databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane, EBSCO and Web of Science) an

Aligning neonatal sepsis triage diagnostics with WHO target product profiles in low- and middle-income countries.

Neonatal sepsis is a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet despite this, progress in the development and implementation of effective diagnostics has been limited. Current diagnostic methods rely on clinical assessments of nonspecific signs and symptoms, limited laboratory testing and technologies that are inaccessible, unaffordable or unsuitable for resource-constrained settings. There is an urgent need for reliable, affordable and context-appropriate point-of-care diagnostics. This analysis synthesises evidence across current and emerg

Artificial Intelligence in the Golden Hour: A scoping review of prehospital trauma triage and implementation feasibility in LMICs.

BACKGROUND: The Golden Hour of trauma care in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) is routinely compromised by systemic deficits, including unmapped infrastructure, chronic traffic congestion, and a critical scarcity of diagnostic tools. While high-income countries utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize mature systems, AI in the Global South acts as a structural substitute to leapfrog foundational barriers. This scoping review maps AI applications in LMIC prehospital care and evaluates their implementation feasibility. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a systematic searc

Effects of compulsory and free basic education policies and COVID-19-related educational disruptions on offspring mortality in low-income and middle-income countries: a quasi-experimental and modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Compulsory and free basic education policies (hereafter called education policies) are essential for enhancing educational attainment, which has been linked to improved offspring health outcomes. However, existing studies do not provide strong evidence with causal inference on how these policies influence offspring mortality in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Furthermore, although COVID-19 has substantially disrupted education systems in LMICs, its long-term consequences for offspring mortality remain unclear. METHODS: We extracted individual-level data from the na

Chlorhexidine-Alcohol Versus Povidone-Iodine for Surgical Site Infection Prevention in Abdominal Surgery in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections remain disproportionately common in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed evidence comparing chlorhexidine-alcohol (CHG-ALC) and povidone-iodine (PI) for preoperative skin antisepsis in abdominal surgery in LMICs. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Lens.org from January 2015 to October 2025 for randomized trials and prospective cohort studies conducted in LMICs that compared CHG-ALC with PI and reported SSI outcomes after abdominal surgery. Because some elig

Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) for the Diagnosis of High-Burden Viral Diseases in Resource-Limited Countries.

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is an innovative nucleic acid amplification technique that operates under isothermal conditions and is distinguished by its high analytical efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and operational simplicity. Unlike conventional molecular assays, LAMP does not require sophisticated instrumentation or highly specialized personnel, rendering it particularly suitable for diagnostic deployment in resource-limited settings. Reaction outcomes are typically determined through direct visual inspection, often via colorimetric readouts, further enhancing its applicab

Catch-up and life-course vaccination policies for adult and adolescent migrants in low-and-middle income countries: A policy analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent and adult migrants in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are often under-immunised because of disrupted vaccination in childhood and barriers to care, increasing the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases. WHO's Immunization Agenda 2030 strengthens calls for life-course immunisation and inclusion of marginalised groups in catch-up initiatives (including Td/Tdap, IPV, MR/MMR, HepB, HPV). Despite evidence from Europe that migrants are frequently missed, it is unclear how far LMIC policies include adolescents and adults beyond child-focused programmes. We analysed catch

Equity and Access in HIV Prevention: Addressing Global Disparities in PrEP Use Among Men Who Have Sex With Men Population.

Despite proven efficacy in preventing HIV, the global uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains limited and uneven, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). A meta-analysis by Zhao et al. reveals that only 20% of PrEP-eligible MSM have ever used the medication, with stark disparities across regions and income levels. While uptake has increased over time, significant barriers persist, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These barriers include financial constraints, limited health care infrastructure, provider knowledge gaps, and pervasive stigma, which tog

Bridging the implementation gap: Challenges and opportunities for integrating whole genome sequencing in tuberculosis surveillance in low-resource settings.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health concern, particularly in low-income countries where the impact is greater. The lack of proper surveillance tools in these countries is a big impediment to effective TB control. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) has successfully been integrated into routine TB programs in high-income countries and transformed disease surveillance by providing rapid, high-resolution transmission insights, drug resistance profiling, and outbreak detection. However, its uptake in resource-limited settings where TB burden is most prevalent remains limited.

Lay health-worker delivered and technology-based interventions for sexual and reproductive health among adolescents and young adults in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are at high risk of harmful sexual and reproductive health (SRH) practices. Preventive and educational interventions by lay health workers or through technological means are a cost-effective and scalable solution. Unfortunately, to date, there is too little synthesised evidence on available lay health-worker delivered or technology-based interventions, their target populations and content, their implementation and effect on different SRH outcomes as well as facilitators and barriers to intervention effe

Environmental Issues in Global Pediatric Health: Policy Statement.

Pediatricians and pediatric trainees in North America are increasingly involved in caring for children and adolescents in or from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In many LMICs, hazardous environmental exposures-notably outdoor and household air pollution, water pollution, lead, pesticides, and other manufactured chemicals-are highly prevalent and account for twice the proportion of disease and deaths among young children as in North America. Climate change will likely worsen these exposures. It is important that pediatricians and other pediatric health professionals from high-income
