BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) are conditions that may affect fetal growth and development. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of the myocardial performance index (MPI) and Doppler parameters in identifying fetal growth restriction (FGR) in HDP. Further, this study also sought to analyze the correlation between fetal echocardiographic parameters and pregnancy outcomes.
METHODS: A total of 202 pregnant women at Xiangyang No. 1 People's Hospital were recruited for this prospective study and allocated to three groups: the healthy control group (n=95), HDP with

OBJECTIVE: Fetal growth restriction is a common obstetrical complication that affects up to 10% of pregnancies in the general population and is most commonly due to underlying placental diseases. The purpose of this guideline is to provide summary statements and recommendations to support a clinical framework for effective screening, diagnosis, and management of pregnancies that are either at risk of or affected by fetal growth restriction.
TARGET POPULATION: All pregnant patients with a singleton pregnancy.
BENEFITS, HARMS, AND COSTS: Implementation of the recommendations in this guideline

OBJECTIVE: Half of all preterm births occur in women without clinical risk factors. Our goal was to assess fetal fibronectin assay, Bishop score, and cervical ultrasonography as screening tests to predict which low-risk pregnancies will end in preterm birth.
STUDY DESIGN: We performed a secondary analysis of data collected at 22 to 24 weeks' gestation from low-risk subjects enrolled in the Preterm Prediction Study, an observational study of risk factors for preterm birth conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network. Analysis w

Metabolomics is the study of small molecules (metabolites), within cells, tissues and biofluids. Maternal metabolites can provide important insight into the health and development of both mother and fetus throughout pregnancy. This study assessed metabolic profiles in the maternal circulation prior to and at the time of diagnosis of preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction. Maternal plasma samples were collected from two independent cohorts: (1) Established disease cohort: 50 participants diagnosed with early-onset preeclampsia (< 34 weeks' gestation), 14 with early-onset fetal growth restric

BACKGROUND: The functional maternal-fetal hemodynamic unit includes fetal umbilical vein flow and maternal peripheral vascular resistance.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationships between maternal and fetal hemodynamics in a population with suspected fetal growth restriction.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective study of normotensive pregnancies referred to our outpatient clinic for a suspected fetal growth restriction. Maternal hemodynamics measurement was performed, using a noninvasive device (USCOM-1A) and a fetal ultrasound evaluation to assess fetal biometry and velocimetry

Cytogenetic prenatal diagnosis (PND) is under national health program in most developed countries, while it concerns a small part of population at risk in developing countries. Finance is common reason of absence of PND development, but socio-cultural believes play an important role in Arab Muslim countries. In this paper we report results of 3110 fetal karyotypes carried out in a Tunisian population, by cultured amniocytes analysis. It is the largest report in a Muslim Arab country in our Knowledge. Abnormal karyotypes rate was 4.18% classified in two groups: bad prognosis (3.05%) and good pr

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest associations between exposure to individual polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) with preterm birth (PTB) and shorter gestational age. Little is known about exposure to PBDE mixtures and these outcomes. We evaluated associations of multiple PBDEs in early pregnancy with gestational age at delivery and PTB.
METHODS: Data were collected from 2046 women without obesity and 396 women with obesity from the NICHD Fetal Growth Studies, who had early pregnancy plasma PBDEs concentrations and gestational age at delivery. PTB was defined as < 37 weeks of gestation at deliv

CONTEXT: The importance of maternal T₄ for brain development prior to the onset of fetal thyroid function has been suggested in basic studies, and a correlation between mild maternal T₄ deficiency in early gestation and disturbance of neurodevelopment in progenies has been shown in large case-control studies. These findings suggest that maternal T₄ deficiency in early pregnancy potentially affects neurointellectual development. On the other hand, no apparent adverse effect in children born to mothers with overt hypothyroidism in Japan has been reported where maternal T₄ had been restored to no

Reports of decreased semen quality and increased rates of developmental abnormalities of the male reproductive tract along with increasing incidence of testicular cancer have focused attention on man-made chemicals as potential causative factors. A biologically plausible hypothesis has been advanced which suggests that man-made chemicals act as endocrine disruptors through interaction with the estrogen receptor resulting in altered development of the reproductive tract. Available evidence suggests that this mechanism may play only a minor role in the purported adverse effects described to date

Bone gamma-carboxyglutamic acid containing protein (BGP) was isolated from human bone and anti-BGP antibody was produced in rabbits. Localization of BGP was investigated immunocytochemically by light and electron microscopy in human bones in various developmental stages and pathological conditions. In the bones of a 12 week fetus, osteoblasts stained strongly in areas of bone formation. However in bones of late fetal stages and in newborns and adults, BGP was localized predominantly in the osteoid and bone matrix in the ossifying front. Osteoblasts and osteocytes also stained positive, but les

BACKGROUND: Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) include the range of disabilities that occur in children exposed to alcohol during pregnancy, with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) on the severe end of the spectrum. Clinical research has documented a range of cognitive, social, and communication deficits in FASD and it indicates the need for diagnostic tools that can identify children with diminished communicative capacities resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure. Previous research indicates that analysis of nominal reference errors within narrative discourse may provide such a tool.

BACKGROUND: Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is used for the treatment of diarrhea, as a urinary antiseptic, hypotensive, and diuretic. Yarrow also has traditionally been used as an abortifacient, emmenagogue, contraceptive, and for stimulating uterine contractions. For this reason, it is contra-indicated for use in pregnancy. There has, however, been little scientific research carried out to either confirm or refute this recommendation.
METHODS: Female rats were dosed, orally by gavage using 56 times the human dose of yarrow daily on either gestation days (GD) 1-8 or GD 8-15. Two groups of cont

Osteoporosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality through its association with age-related fractures. Although most effort in fracture prevention has been directed at retarding the rate of age-related bone loss, and reducing the frequency and severity of trauma among elderly people, evidence is growing that peak bone mass is an important contributor to bone strength during later life. The normal patterns of skeletal growth have been well characterized in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. It has been confirmed that boys have higher bone mineral content, but not volumetric bone de

Administration of p-chlorophenylalanine to mouse females leading to a decreased level of endogenous serotonin during the early periods of pregnancy leads either to the absence of cytokinesis at the stage of zygote or to a sharp reduction of the cleavage rate in embryos up to its complete arrest. Formation of the blastocyst is impaired, although cavitation may take place at the same time as in the control. In the latter case, the blastocysts consist of a small number of large blastomeres, and the separation into trophoblast and inner cell mass is characteristically indistinct. Decreased level o

A 33-year-old primigravida at 26 weeks gestation presented with fetal hydrops and fetal anemia following prior parvovirus B19 infection. The fetus required two intrauterine transfusions of packed red cells. At 35 weeks gestation, a cesarean section was performed for obstetric reasons. As a consequence of a prenatal bowel perforation, the neonate developed meconium peritonitis, for which she needed laparotomy. This case demonstrates that there may be an association between intrauterine parvovirus infection and meconium peritonitis, the latter possibly caused by vascular injury in fetal life.

We describe a case of a 19-year-old G1P0 woman with an unremarkable prenatal course who presented at term in labor. Fetal bradycardia developed and forceps were used to deliver a male infant, who was born with Apgar scores of 0 and 0 and could not be resuscitated. Examination at autopsy revealed no gross evidence of trauma, but on microscopic examination of the lungs and the placenta, multiple fetal vessels contained emboli consisting of fragments of fetal cerebellar cortex. Previously reported cases of this rare phenomenon are reviewed and the pathogenesis is discussed.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS), which is caused by partial or complete triplication of chromosome 21, may cause a range of clinical features. Although most fetuses with DS exhibit typical characteristics, the molecular pathogenesis underlying DS remains unclear. Wnt signaling is known to play a crucial role in fetal growth and development. However, the link between Wnt signaling and the abnormal development of fetuses with DS remains poorly understood. In this study, our objective was to investigate the dysregulation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway in the amniocytes of fetuses diagnosed with DS.
