Psychological and endocrine correlates of chronic pelvic pain associated with adhesions.

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a frequent and often unexplained gynecological complaint. We attempted to evaluate stress history, psychological features and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function in a group of patients suffering from CPP associated with pelvic adhesions. We recruited 10 patients with CPP and adhesions and 14 painfree, infertile control patients who underwent gynecological examination and diagnostic laparoscopy in a general hospital. Psychological assessment included structured interviews on sexual and physical abuse experiences and major life events as well as questi

Characterization of early cytokine responses and an interleukin (IL)-6-dependent pathway of endogenous glucocorticoid induction during murine cytomegalovirus infection.

Early infection with murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) induces circulating levels of interleukin (IL)-12, interferon (IFN)-gamma, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Studies presented here further characterize these responses by defining kinetics and extending evaluation to include IL-1, IL-6, and glucocorticoids. IL-12 p40, IFN-gamma, TNF, IL-1alpha, and IL-6 were shown to be increased, but IL-1beta was undetectable, in serum of MCMV-infected mice. The IL-12 p40, IFN-gamma, TNF, and IL-6 responses were dramatic with peak levels reaching >150-10,000 pg/ml at 32-40 h after infection and rapidly declin

Adrenal and gonadal steroid hormone deficiency in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multifactorial disease in which both environmental and genetic factors play a role. Data also suggest that neuroendocrine factors are involved. I briefly summarize observations that support this hypothesis. RA is characterized by striking age-sex disparities. The incidence of disease in women increases steadily from the age of menarche to its maximal incidence around menopause. The disease is uncommon in men under age 45, but its incidence increases rapidly in older men and approaches the incidence in women. These observations strongly suggest that androgens play

Changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in men after cadaver kidney transplantation and cyclosporine therapy.

A variety of plasma androgens, estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, cortisol, and thyroid parameters were examined in 10 men followed serially before and after cadaver kidney transplantation. Before transplantation, plasma testosterone levels were below normal in 8 of the 10 men. Free testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone were at the lower range of normal values, yet plasma estradiol levels were elevated 3-fold, and prolactin levels were also high. One month after transplantation, all hormones measured were suppressed, probably

[Endocrinology of cryptorchidism].

The testicular descent into the scrotum depends on a series of complex endocrine and mechanical interactions. The first stage or transabdominal that occurs during the first 3 months of gestation is probably produced by the differential growth of the fetus and is believed to be mediated by the Müllerian inhibiting hormone. The second stage or transinguinal migration that occurs during the 8th month of gestation is a complex event depending on the interaction between the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular hormonal axis and mechanical factors as gubernaculum, intra-abdominal pressure, epididymis.

Increased responsiveness of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis after neurotoxin-induced hypothalamic denervation.

Neonatal treatment with monosodium glutamate (MSG) induces severe neuronal damage in selected brain areas, which in turn results in a number of neuroendocrine abnormalities during adult life. The present study was designed to determine what effects this partial and selective denervation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis may have on the sensitivity of two key components of that axis, the median eminence (ME) and the anterior pituitary (AP). In order to test any changes in response that may occur after MSG treatment, the release of several peptide hormones from either the ME or the AP was evalu

Primary cortisol resistance: a familial syndrome and an animal model.

Primary cortisol resistance in man is a familial disease. It is characterized by increased plasma cortisol concentrations, high urinary free cortisol excretion, a normal circadian pattern of cortisol secretion, resistance to adrenal suppression by dexamethasone and absence of clinical stigmata of Cushing's syndrome. In its severe form, hypertension and hypokalemic alkalosis are present, owing to increased secretion of the sodium-retaining corticoids, corticosterone and deoxycorticosterone. In subjects with a less severe resistance to cortisol, there are no clinical abnormalities and the diseas

The influence of the psyche and the brain on immunity and disease susceptibility: a critical review.

In critically reviewing the sources of evidence connecting psyche and brain with the immune system, the authors include a brief review of current knowledge of the immune system, its interactions with the neuroendocrine system, and other factors influencing its regulation. These include developmental stages, aging, rhythmicity, and a variety of exogenous influences. The need for developing further information about normal base lines is emphasized. Against that background, many sources of data demonstrating connections between the central nervous system and the immune system are presented: indir

Effects of glucocorticoid replacement therapy in patients with pituitary disease: A new perspective for personalized replacement therapy.

Secondary adrenal insufficiency (SAI) is an endocrine disorder due to impaired secretion of ACTH resulting from any disease affecting the pituitary gland. Glucocorticoid replacement therapy is mandatory to ensure patient survival, haemodynamic stability, and quality of life. In fact, a correct dose adjustement is mandatory due to the fact that inappropriately low doses expose patients to hypoadrenal crisis, while inappropriately high doses contribute to glucose metabolic and cardiovascular deterioration. This review analyses the current evidence from available publications on the epidemiology

Comparison of slow-paced breathing interventions with and without an inhalation-hold on physiological outcomes: A randomized cross-over pilot study.

Slow-paced breathing (SPB) interventions have shown promise for modulating physiological regulation and enhancing cognitive performance. However, few studies have empirically examined how specific components of the breathing structure, particularly inhalation-holds during SPB, influence autonomic and endocrine responses. Thus, the present pilot study sought to address this gap by comparing the physiological and psychological outcomes of SPB with and without a 4-s post-inhalation breath hold using a within-subjects design. Participants (n = 32; 37% female) completed two SPB conditions in a rand

Adverse childhood experiences and prospective changes in diurnal cortisol activity during the transition to adolescence: Moderation by daily coping and adolescent sex.

PURPOSE: Examining circadian hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity during adolescence is vital for understanding physiological changes. Limited research explores risk and protective factors for diurnal HPA activity. This study investigates how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and coping are associated with changes in diurnal cortisol patterns, using a combination of physiological biomarkers (i.e., salivary cortisol), daily diaries, and longitudinal assessments spanning two years. METHODS: The sample included 316 Chinese adolescents (33% females; T1 Mage = 10.79 years, SD = 0.

Walnut peptide and theanine combination ameliorates sleep disorders: a multi-species study including a human trial.

Chronic stress-induced sleep disorders are characterized by disrupted sleep architecture and a significant reduction in slow-wave sleep (SWS). These disorders represent a major public health challenge and are mechanistically linked to the hyperactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This study employed a translational research paradigm-including zebrafish screening, a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse model, and an eight-week randomized, placebo-controlled human trial-to evaluate the efficacy of a combination of walnut peptide and theanine (WPT). Treatment wit

Abdominal ultrasound attenuates early-stage aberrant proliferation and depressive behavior in AOM/DSS-induced colorectal cancer: regulatory mechanisms of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and HPA axis.

Chronic inflammation is a key factor promoting colorectal cancer (CRC) development and progression. Abdominal ultrasound stimulation (AUS) has shown potential in alleviating inflammatory reactions and behavioral impairments in dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis models by modulating the gut microbiota composition and mitigating damage to colonic tissues. This study observed the protective effects of AUS on colitis and mice with early-stage CRC and clarified the mechanism potentially underlying these effects. CRC was induced in mice using azoxymethane (AOM)/DSS. Low-intensity pulsed ul

Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E alleviate heat stress-induced mood disturbances in male mice: Modulation of inflammatory pathways and the HPA axis.

Heat stress, as an environmental stressor, can lead to temperature dysregulation and neuroinflammation, causing depression and anxiety by disrupting brain physiology and functional connectivity. This study looked at how co-enzyme Q10 (Q10) and vitamin E (Vit E), alone and together, affected heat stress-caused anxiety and depression symptoms and inflammation in male mice. Five groups were utilized in the study: control, heat stress (NS), Q10, Vit E, and the combination group (Q10+Vit E). The mice were subjected for 15 min/day to a temperature of 43°C for 14 consecutive days, followed by daily t

ABCC1 modulates negative feedback control of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in vivo in humans.

BACKGROUND: Cortisol and corticosterone both circulate in human plasma and, due to differing export by ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, may exert differential cellular effects. ABCB1 (expressed in brain) exports cortisol not corticosterone while ABCC1 (expressed in adipose and skeletal muscle) exports corticosterone not cortisol. We hypothesised that ABCC1 inhibition increases corticosteroid receptor occupancy by corticosterone but not cortisol in humans. METHODS: A randomised double-blind crossover study was conducted in 14 healthy men comparing placebo and ABCC1 inhibitor probenecid
