Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a significant cause of neurological disease in humans throughout Asia causing an estimated 70,000 human cases each year with approximately 10,000 fatalities. The virus contains a positive sense RNA genome within a host-derived membrane and is classified within the family Flaviviridae. Like many flaviviruses, it is transmitted by mosquitoes, particularly those of the genus Culex in a natural cycle involving birds and some livestock species. Spill-over into domestic animals results in a spectrum of disease ranging from asymptomatic infection in some species t

In 2000, an outbreak of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) occurred in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Since then there have been sparse efforts to monitor for RVFV reemergence. During 2012, we enrolled 300 individuals with ruminant exposure and 50 age-group matched non-exposed controls in southwestern KSA, in a cross-sectional epidemiological study of RVFV. Sera from the participants were screened with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for anti-RVFV IgG antibodies of which 39 (11.1%) were positive. Sixteen (41.0%) of those 39 were also positive by a plaque reduction neutralization a

Viral vectors used in heterologous prime-boost regimens are one of very few vaccination approaches that have yielded significant protection against controlled human malaria infections. Recently, protection induced by chimpanzee adenovirus priming and modified vaccinia Ankara boosting using the ME-TRAP insert has been correlated with the induction of potent CD8(+) T cell responses. This regimen has progressed to field studies where efficacy against infection has now been reported. The same vectors have been used pre-clinically to identify preferred protective antigens for use in vaccines agains

Lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis are diseases of severe morbidity that affect the poorest of the poor in the world. The diseases are caused by filarial nematodes that are transmitted by mosquitoes or biting blackflies and are endemic to more than 80 countries worldwide, mainly in the tropics and sub-tropics. Current control programs aim to eliminate the diseases by distributing antifilarial drugs. However, the primary effect of the drugs is to kill the microfilariae in the blood or skin, thus preventing uptake by the obligate insect vector. Since the adult worms live 10 years or longer,

Since the World Health Assembly's (Resolution WHA 50.29, 1997) call for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis by the year 2020, most of the endemic countries identified have established programmes to meet this objective. In 1997, a National Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Plan was drawn up by the Ministry of Health of Brazil, creating local programs for the elimination of Bancroftian filariasis in areas with active transmission. Based on a comprehensive bibliographic search for available studies and reports of filariasis epidemiology in Brazil, current status of this parasitic infection and

Anopheles gambiae s.s mosquitoes are important vectors of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and malaria in Ghana. To better understand their ecological aspects and influence on disease transmission, we examined the spatial distribution of the An. gambiae (M and S) molecular forms and associated environmental factors, and determined their relationship with disease prevalence. Published and current data available on the An. gambiae species in Ghana were collected in a database for analysis, and the study sites were georeferenced and mapped. Using the An. gambiae s.s sites, environmental data were derive

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that causes acute encephalitis with high mortality in humans. To understand the virus-host interactions that influence JEV virulence, we determined the lethality of a neurovirulent (RP-9) and an attenuated (RP-2ms) variant of JEV in several immunodeficient mice strains. The attenuated phenotype of RP-2ms was completely lost in Stat-1-deficient mice, but its virulence was only slightly increased in mice lacking the components of adaptive immunity, suggesting an important role of the interferon (IFN) system in controlling JEV infec

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes (Aedes Aegypti). WHO estimates that 40% of the world's population live in areas endemic for dengue fever, and that there are approximately 50 million cases of dengue infection worldwide every year. This study aims to measure the economic consequences of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Southern Vietnam on family level. Estimating the economic impact of dengue fever/dengue hemorrhagic fever is important in order to prioritize resources for research, prevention, and control. So far no studies from Vietnam concerning this subject have been pu

Studies on the effect of a juvenoid, DPE-28 (2,4-dinitrophenyl-2',6'-di-tertiarybutyl phenyl ether) on biology and behaviour of Cx. quinquefasciatus showed that the developmental duration, sex ratio, mating success and blood feeding were considerably affected by the exposure of larvae and pupae to the compound. Exposure of fourth instar larvae to 0.007 (EI90) and 0.0019 (EI50) ppm of DPE-28 prolonged the duration of pupation by 58.6 and 52.4 hr and delayed the adult emergence by 35.4 and 17.7 hr in males and 36.8 and 21.1 hr in females respectively. Exposure of freshly ecdysed pupae to 10 and

Since the 1980s, yellow fever has reemerged across Africa and in South America. The total of 18 735 yellow fever cases and 4522 deaths reported from 1987 to 1991 represents the greatest amount of yellow fever activity reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) for any 5-year period since 1948. There is an excellent vaccine against yellow fever. At present, a high proportion of travelers to at-risk areas are reported to be immunized, reflecting widespread knowledge about the International Health Regulations. In South America, yellow fever remains an occupational hazard for forest workers,

Wild-caught, immature black-bellied whistling ducks (Dendrocygna autumnalis) were inoculated with eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), St. Louis encephalitis (SLE), or western equine encephalitis (WEE) virus. Susceptibility, duration and titer of viremia, and antibody response to these arboviruses were determined. Birds from all inoculated groups became viremic. Higher virus titers occurred in the EEE group but overall mean titers were not significantly different among experimental groups. All birds inoculated with EEE and SLE viruses developed antibodies, and six of seven ducks receiving WEE vi

Dengue viruses occur as four antigenically related but distinct serotypes transmitted to humans by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. These viruses generally cause a benign syndrome, dengue fever, in the American and African tropics, and a severe syndrome, dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS), in Southeast Asian children. This severe syndrome, which recently has also been identified in children infected with the virus in Puerto Rico, is characterized by increased vascular permeability and abnormal hemostasis. It occurs in infants less than 1 year of age born to dengue-immune mothers

Lysinibacillus sphaericus, a bacterium successfully used in the control of mosquitoes, bears its insecticidal traits in GI8, a recently identified mosquitocidal genomic island. GI8 is renamed IME8 in the present work, as it displays a typical genetic organization of an Integrative and Mobilizable Element (IME) and its circularized form is not self-conjugative but mobilizable by the pBsph-like plasmid p1593. The IME8 integration module (int-operon) encodes two integrase-like proteins (Int1 and Int2) belonging to the family of tyrosine recombinases, and a hypothetical protein (Hp3). All three OR

Aedes (Ae.) aegypti and Ae. albopictus are efficient vectors of medically important Old World alphaviruses including chikungunya virus. In contrast to the well-characterized responses to orthoflavivirus infections, antiviral defense against alphaviruses in Aedes mosquitoes remains comparatively underexplored. This review summarizes current knowledge of antiviral defense mechanisms in Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, integrating insights from both intrinsic immune responses and extrinsic antiviral factors to translational relevance. RNA interference (RNAi) dominates the antiviral defense against

Acyl carrier protein (ACP) and its 4-phosphopantetheine prosthetic group canonically function as the soluble scaffold for acyl chain assembly and elongation during type II fatty acid biosynthesis (FASII). Plasmodium malaria parasites retain a FASII pathway in the apicoplast organelle that has been the subject of considerable scrutiny and confusion. Although apicoplast FASII is essential for Plasmodium falciparum growth within mosquitoes and the human liver, this pathway is dispensable and largely inactive in blood-stage parasites that can scavenge host fatty acids. In contrast to FASII enzymes

Dengue virus (DENV), primarily spread by Aedes mosquitoes, remains a significant public health concern in India. This study focused on Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India aiming to detect DENV serotypes in Aedes larvae to gain early insights into viral circulation. A total of 8,257 larvae were collected from 60 locations, pooled (n = 390) and screened for dengue using real-time-PCR (pan-dengue assay). Serotyping was carried out using serotype-specific RT-PCR targeting DENV-1 to DENV-4. Overall, 60 pools tested positive for DENV. DENV-1 emerged as the dominant serotype across both winter and rainy seaso

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya (CHIK) is an acute febrile arthritic illness caused by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Understanding the pathophysiology of CHIK is crucial because of the wide distribution of cases and the lack of specific treatments or validated biomarkers. This study aimed to describe the cytokine profiles of female patients with laboratory-confirmed CHIK across the three clinical phases of the disease, monitored at an outpatient clinic in Northeastern Brazil. Additionally, this study evaluated whether cytokine levels were associated with persistent arthralgia and the
