Do personality traits explain the adjustment? A study of civilian victims of war in Ukraine.

Introduction: Forced migration exposes civilians to multiple potentially traumatic events. Personality traits may shape individual differences in adjustment, yet their role in refugee populations remains underexplored. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 160 Ukrainian civilian refugees (75% female; Mage = 33.0, SD = 13.9) who completed standardized measures of personality, attachment, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and posttraumatic growth (PTG).Results: Emotional Stability showed a large negative association with PTSD symptoms. In regression models, personality traits explained 26…

Adverse outcomes following psychedelic use in adolescents and adults: associations with age and personality traits.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are increasingly using classical psychedelics, yet little is known about how psychedelics use is related to their mental health. Emerging evidence suggests that adolescents may be more vulnerable to adverse outcomes in relation to psychedelic use compared to adults. This descriptive and exploratory study examined differences between adolescents and adults in reported psychedelic experiences, with a focus on adverse outcomes and the potential role of personality traits. METHODS: Data were drawn from a community sample (N = 1185), in which participants retrospectively rep…

Personality profiles and coaching leadership preferences among Chinese female basketball players: a latent profile analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Athletes' personality is an important factor influencing their preferences for coaches' leadership behaviors. However, previous studies have primarily adopted a variable-centered approach and have rarely examined these preferences from a person-centered perspective. This study aimed to identify latent personality profiles among Chinese female basketball players and examine how these profiles, together with individual personality traits, were associated with preferences for different coaching leadership behaviors, thereby providing practical implications for coaching practice. ME…

Defining nonresponse to pulmonary rehabilitation by threshold scores for personality traits: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits have been associated with the risk of nonresponse to therapeutic interventions such as pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). To optimise the tailoring of PR based on personality traits, this study aimed to extend existing knowledge on the relationship between personality traits and the risk of nonresponse to inpatient PR, and to define optimal threshold scores for personality traits to accurately predict nonresponse. METHOD: 719 patients with chronic respiratory diseases were included across three centres in a multidisciplinary inpatient PR following international guid…

A nomogram model to predict the risk for etomidate use disorder with antisocial personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of etomidate use disorder (EUD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) poses significant challenges in clinical assessment and management. This study aims to develop a predictive model to estimate the risk of ASPD in EUD patients. METHODS: Male patients with EUD were recruited from a drug rehabilitation center between March and December 2024. Behavioral, health, psychological, and sociodemographic variables were collected, and diagnoses of ASPD were established using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). The baseline variables were screene…

Threats to sense of control: Triggers for acute emotional responses in obsessive-compulsive personality symptomatology.

There is tension between theories and empirical evidence linking affective instability to obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) and OCPD diagnostic tools emphasizing restricted affect. Contextual stressors, including unexpected routine disruption and interpersonal discord, may help reconcile this apparent contradiction. High environmental control in OCPD should, on average, correspond to reduced affect, with infrequent lapses alternatively producing acute, short-term elevations. The current study examined affective processes of OCPD in daily life using ecological momentary assessmen…

Narcissism Facets and Gelotophobia as Predictors of Early Outcomes in Group Psychotherapy for Personality Difficulties.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated how specific narcissistic traits and gelotophobia (fear of being laughed at) predict changes in depressive symptoms and negative affect during the first three months of treatment in individuals with personality disorders. METHOD: Forty-eight patients (75% female, M age = 31.76) with personality difficulties participated in group psychotherapy. Outcome variables were depressive symptoms (PHQ-9) and negative affect (PANAS-X), measured pre-intervention and after 3 months of psychotherapy. Hierarchical regressions were conducted to test the hypotheses. The analy…

Development and Initial Validation of the Pathological Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Scale for Children (POPS-C).

Personality has repeatedly been shown to be evident and reliably measured in childhood. However, studying obsessive-compulsive personality (OCP) traits cohesively in youth has been limited, given the lack of developmentally modified assessments for the presentation. The current manuscript adapted an adult measure of OCP traits, the Pathological Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Scale (POPS), into a parent-report child measure (POPS-C). Study one explored factor structure and preliminary external validity with various clinical measures. Study two used a larger, independent sample to examine conf…

The Incremental Validity of Transdiagnostic Dimensions of Personality and Psychopathology in Predicting Important Psychological Outcomes.

Dimensional models of psychopathology offer an alternative to traditional categorical systems, yet research examining the incremental validity of transdiagnostic dimensions over diagnostic categories remains limited. The current study uses data from 685 outpatients, who presented at an academic medical centre for psychological assessment, to determine whether transdiagnostic dimensions derived from commonly used clinical assessment measures (Fear/Distress, Narcissistic Antagonism, Attachment, Flexible Thinking, Somatization, External Coping and Anger/Aggression) increment the variance in suici

Associations Between Reproductive Disorders and Specific Physical, Mental, Personality, and Social Characteristics: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The present review aims to ascertain whether reproductive disorders are associated with specific physical, mental, personality, and social traits. This information may be used to support or reject the hypothesis on the origin of infecundity, which proposes that women/men with preferred characteristics, including high resource holding potential, genetic quality, and/or reproductive potential have advantage over women/men displaying less preferred traits in selecting partners with preferred traits. METHODS: A literature search of the reported associations of endometriosis, …

Perinatal mental health practitioners' experiences supporting mothers with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) is a controversial and potentially stigmatising diagnosis, especially in women. Limited research exists on how mothers diagnosed with EUPD engage with perinatal mental health services and no United Kingdom studies have explored perinatal mental health staff perspectives on working with this population. AIM: To explore perinatal mental health staff's experiences of working with mothers diagnosed with EUPD and their views on service provision. METHOD: Reflexive Thematic Analysis was used to analyse semi-structured interviews with 13 …

Emotional Dysregulation as a Mediator Between Childhood Adversity and Negative Urgency in Borderline Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The biosocial theory of borderline personality disorder (BPD) posits that emotional dysregulation develops from the transaction between a biological vulnerability and an invalidating environment (e.g., childhood adversity), and in turn leads to behavioral dyscontrol. This study aimed to empirically test this core mechanistic pathway in a non-Western clinical sample. METHODS: We hypothesized that the relationship between childhood adversity and the hallmark BPD trait of negative urgency (acting impulsively when distressed) would be mediated by difficulties in emotion regulation. A …

Caregiver Strain and Girls' ADHD, ODD, and Personality Pathology Symptoms: A One-Year Prospective Study.

Caregiver strain influences service utilization and engagement. Prior work-largely centered on boys-shows that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) strongly contribute to strain; however, less is known about these relations in girls. This study examined associations between youth psychopathology symptom dimensions (ADHD, ODD, borderline personality features [BPF], a problem more commonly identified in girls) and caregiver strain facets (objective, subjective internalized, subjective externalized, total strain) among caregivers of 10- to 15-yea…

Borderline Personality Disorder in South Korea: A Narrative Review of Clinical Research and Future Directions.

South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates among developed countries, with suicide being the leading cause of death among individuals in their teens to 40s. Despite this serious situation, systematic interventions for suicide prevention remain limited, particularly concerning borderline personality disorder (BPD), which is strongly associated with suicidality. This narrative review examines 11 empirical studies involving clinically diagnosed BPD samples in South Korea, focusing on the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and treatment challenges of BPD within the Korean sociocultural co…

Exploring Psilocybin-Assisted Schema Therapy: A Conceptual Framework for Potential Therapeutic Synergies in Personality Disorders.

Personality disorders (PDs) are characterized by rigid and maladaptive patterns of self- and interpersonal functioning, leading to high clinical burden and limited treatment outcomes. Schema Therapy (ST), an integrative psychotherapy rooted in cognitive-behavioral principles, conceptualizes PDs in terms of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS)-pervasive cognitive-affective structures formed through unmet emotional needs-and schema modes, dynamic states organizing emotion, belief, and behavior. Evidence indicates moderate efficacy of ST, mainly for borderline personality disorder, with limited resear…
