The development of a population-level clinical screening tool for self-harm repetition and suicide: the ReACT Self-Harm Rule.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm is a common reason for Emergency Department (ED) attendance. We aimed to develop a clinical tool to help identify patients at higher risk of repeat self-harm, or suicide, within 6 months of an ED self-harm presentation. METHOD: The tool, the ReACT Self-Harm Rule, was derived using multicentre data from a prospective cohort study. Binary recursive partitioning was applied to data from two centres, and data from a separate centre were used to test the tool. There were 29 571 self-harm presentations to five hospital EDs between January 2003 and June 2007, involving 18 680 a

Intravenous self-administration of etonitazene alone and combined with cocaine in rhesus monkeys: comparison with heroin and antagonism by naltrexone and naloxonazine.

RATIONALE: In humans, micro opioid-cocaine combinations (speedballs) have been reported to heighten pleasurable effects and result in greater abuse potential compared to either drug individually. Emerging evidence in animals suggests that the ability of mu opioids to enhance the reinforcing effects of cocaine might be independent of their mu intrinsic efficacy even though mu agonist efficacy appears to be a determinant in the reinforcing effects of micro opioids themselves. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship between agonist efficacy, self-administration, and the enhancement of c

Evaluating the Utility of Smartphone-Based Sensor Assessments in Persons With Multiple Sclerosis in the Real-World Using an App (elevateMS): Observational, Prospective Pilot Digital Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease. Current monitoring practices predominantly rely on brief and infrequent assessments, which may not be representative of the real-world patient experience. Smartphone technology provides an opportunity to assess people's daily-lived experience of MS on a frequent, regular basis outside of episodic clinical evaluations. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the feasibility and utility of capturing real-world MS-related health data remotely using a smartphone app, "elevateMS," to investigate the associ

Enhancing perceived clinical competence of nursing students in the AI era: the role of AI acceptance and self-directed learning.

BACKGROUND: In the context of AI-driven transformation in healthcare education, preparing nursing students to effectively engage with generative artificial intelligence tools has become increasingly important. While self-directed learning (SDL) has been consistently associated with clinical competence, the role of AI acceptance in this relationship remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To examine the mediating role of AI acceptance in the relationship between self-directed learning ability and perceived clinical competence among nursing students. METHODS: A cross-sectional, correlational design

Self-other compassion disparities in evaluations of disordered eating behaviors.

Self-compassion has emerged as an effective framework for regulating the emotions underlying disordered eating. Yet little research has examined the barriers individuals face when extending compassion to themselves, particularly in subclinical populations at risk for disordered eating. Across three experiments, we investigated self-other differences in compassion and guilt in response to restrictive eating behaviors. In Study 1, participants (N = 103) evaluated restrictive eating behaviors enacted either by themselves or by a friend. Results revealed a robust self-friend discrepancy: participa

Physical activity and HRQoL among adolescents: the mediating roles of cognitive reappraisal and stress self-management.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity is important for adolescent health, but the psychological pathways linking physical activity to health-related quality of life (HRQoL) remain unclear. This study examined the association between physical activity and HRQoL among secondary school students, focusing on the mediating roles of cognitive reappraisal and stress self-management. METHODS: A paper-based questionnaire survey was conducted in April 2026 among secondary school students in Jiangsu Province, China. A total of 500 questionnaires were distributed, and 420 valid responses were retained. Physica

Brain mechanisms of rumination and negative self-referential processing in adolescent depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is linked to cognitive biases towards more negative and less positive self-relevant information. Rumination, perseverative negative thinking about the past and the self, may contribute to these biases. METHODS: 159 adolescents (12-18 years), with a range of depression symptoms, completed the SRET during fMRI. Multiple regressions tested associations between conventional self-report and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) measured rumination, and neural and behavioral responses during a self-referent encoding task (SRET). RESULTS: Higher rumination (conventional self-

High parasite virulence necessary for the maintenance of host outcrossing via parasite-mediated selection.

Biparental sex is widespread in nature, yet costly relative to uniparental reproduction. It is generally unclear why self-fertilizing or asexual lineages do not readily invade outcrossing populations. The Red Queen hypothesis predicts that coevolving parasites can prevent self-fertilizing or asexual lineages from invading outcrossing host populations. However, only highly virulent parasites are predicted to maintain outcrossing, which may limit the general applicability of the Red Queen hypothesis. Here, we tested whether the ability of coevolving parasites to prevent invasion of self-fertiliz

Evaluation of DNA methylation biomarkers ASCL1 and LHX8 on HPV-positive self-collected samples from primary HPV-based screening.

BACKGROUND: Host-cell DNA methylation analysis can be used to triage women with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive self-collected cervicovaginal samples, but current data are restricted to under-/never-screened women and referral populations. This study evaluated triage performance in women who were offered primary HPV self-sampling for cervical cancer screening. METHODS: Self-collected samples from 593 HPV-positive women who participated in a primary HPV self-sampling trial (IMPROVE study; NTR5078), were tested for the DNA methylation markers ASCL1 and LHX8 using quantitative mult

Similarity in activity and laterality patterns in the angular gyrus during autobiographical memory retrieval and self-referential processing.

Long-term memory is arguably one of the key cognitive functions. At the neural level, the lateral parietal cortex and the angular gyrus, particularly in the left hemisphere, exhibit strong activations during autobiographical and episodic memory retrieval. In a separate sub-field, left-lateralized activations of the angular gyrus are also found during self-referential processing, defined as higher activity when a trait term is judged by participants as being related to them vs. related to someone else. The question is whether episodic/autobiographical memory retrieval and self-referential proce

A Cognitive-Behavioral Formulation of Narcissistic Self-Esteem Dysregulation.

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a commonly encountered diagnosis, affecting approximately 1%-6% of the population, with no evidence-based treatments. Recent scholarship has focused on self-esteem dysregulation as a key component of NPD: Excessively high expectations for oneself and how one should be treated leads to brittle self-esteem and maladaptive reactions to self-esteem threats. The current article builds on this formulation, introducing a cognitive-behavioral model of narcissistic self-esteem dysregulation that clinicians can use in providing a relatable model of change for t

Self-assessed masticatory ability and hospitalisation costs among the elderly living independently.

The escalating medical costs are a social problem in many countries. Masticatory ability is thought to be related to the general health conditions. The purpose of this study was to show relationships between self-assessed masticatory ability and medical costs among the elderly living independently in community. Data on background factors and self-assessed masticatory ability were collected from 702 Japanese elderly persons by questionnaires. An intra-oral examination was performed to examine the number of remaining teeth. Self-assessed masticatory ability was classified into one of three categ

Low perception of control as a cognitive factor of eating disorders. Its independent effects on measures of eating disorders and its interactive effects with perfectionism and self-esteem.

OBJECTIVE: There is a large body of research about perfectionism and low self-esteem in eating disorders (ED). However, little is known about the influence in ED of a distorted cognition in the domain of control: the perception of low control. The present study examined the main and interactive effects of concern over mistakes (an important dimension of perfectionism), self-esteem, and perception of control on drive for thinness, bulimia, and body dissatisfaction. METHOD: Forty individuals with ED and 55 controls completed the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the Anxiety Control Question
