Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2005eng
The incidence of osteoporotic fractures is rising in western societies, partly due to unknown reasons. Persistent organochlorine compounds (POC) have in animal studies impaired the normal bone metabolism and resulted in increased bone fragility, which might have health implications for POC-exposed human populations. The aim of the present study was to assess whether a high dietary intake of POC through fatty fish from the Baltic may result in decreased bone mineral density (BMD) or disturbances in biochemical markers of bone metabolism. From a study base of fishermen and fishermen's wives from

PURPOSE: To compare multislice computed tomography (MSCT)-derived parameters of the trabecular bone structure of the calcaneus with bone mineral density (BMD) in their ability to differentiate between donors with and without osteoporotic fractures of the spine and to optimize CT scan protocols.
METHODS: Forty-two postmortem calcanei (81.2 +/- 10 years) were imaged with a 16-detector row MSCT system using 4 different scan protocols varying spatial resolution (12-24 lp/cm) and radiation dose. Structural parameters of trabecular bone were derived from these images, and BMDs of the calcanei were

Postmenopausal osteoporosis and bone mass are influenced by multiple factors including genetic variation. The importance of LDL receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) for the regulation of bone mass has recently been established, where loss of function mutations is followed by severe osteoporosis and gain of function is related to increased bone mass. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of polymorphisms in the LRP5 gene in regulating bone mass and influencing prospective fracture frequency in a well-described, large cohort of normal, ambulatory Australian women. A total of 1301 women wer

Estrogen has protective effects on the skeleton via its inhibition of bone resorption. Mechanisms for these effects and the selectivity to the estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha) or ER beta are unclear. The purpose of our study was to determine the impact of the ER alpha on skeletal metabolism using murine models with targeted disruption of the ER alpha and beta. Mice generated by homologous recombination and Cre/loxP technology yielding a deletion of the ER alpha exon 3 were evaluated and also crossed with mice with a disruption of the exon 3 of the ER beta to result in double ER alpha and ER

Decreased bone mineral density (BMD) has been reported in patients with celiac disease in association with secondary hyperparathyroidism. The present study investigated whether basal parathyroid hormone (PTH) remained elevated and whether abnormalities of parathyroid function were still present in celiac disease patients treated with a gluten-free diet. Basal seric measurements of calcium and phosphate homeostasis and BMD were obtained in 17 biopsy-proven patients under treatment for a mean period of 5.7+/-3.7 years (range 1.1 to 15.9). In addition, parathyroid function was studied with calciu

BACKGROUND: Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is increasingly being diagnosed in the earlier non-cholestatic stages of disease. Accepted wisdom has been that PBC is frequently complicated by osteoporosis. Whether this association holds true for the broader spectrum of PBC patients now recognised has not as yet been studied.
AIMS: To examine the extent to which osteoporosis occurs more commonly in PBC patients than in normal individuals of the same age and sex.
DESIGN: Retrospective review of a large cohort of well characterised PBC patients.
PATIENTS: A total of 272 PBC patients with definite

Osteoporosis is a common complication of liver transplantation. Its pathogenesis is multifactorial, but preexisting bone disease in patients with chronic liver disease is likely to play an important role. The aim of this study was to evaluate bone mineral density in adult patients with chronic liver disease prior to liver transplantation. A total of 243 consecutive patients (128 male, 115 female; mean age 51.1years) with chronic liver disease undergoing assessment for transplantation, were recruited over a 4-year period. BMD measurements were made using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in the

The main problem in the management of the patients with incidentally discovered adrenal mass (incidentaloma) is whether and when the incidental mass puts the patient at increased risk for an adverse outcome. As osteoporosis is a well known complication of endogenous and exogenous glucocorticoid excess, it is likely that patients with incidentally discovered adrenocortical adenomas have impaired bone mass due to subclinical hypercortisolism. We measured spinal bone mineral density (BMD) by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry in 27 patients (9 men and 18 women) and 54 healthy subjects (18 men and 3

In a cross-sectional, age-matched study, vitamin D status and skeletal status were compared between 26 Pakistani premenopausal women living in Oslo and 24 Norwegian women. The serum calcidiol concentration was significantly lower in Pakistani women (mean and 95% confidence interval (CI) 22 (16-27) nmol l-1 vs. 65 (55-74) nmol l-1, p < 0.001) and serum iPTH significantly higher (5.4 (4.1-6.8) pmol l-l vs. 3.4 (3.0-3.7) pmol l-1, p<0.05). No differences concerning bone mineral density (BMD) measured by DXA in the lumbar spine, femoral neck and total body or ultrasound parameters of the calcaneus

The oophorectomized (OOX) rat has been proposed as a good model of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of OOX in 6-month-old rats to the effects of menopause in women with respect to bone mass, the renal handling of calcium and phosphorus, and calcitropic hormones. To more closely replicate the human situation the rats were pair fed a 0.1% calcium diet. Thirty four, 6-month-old rats were randomized to sham operation or OOX. Whole body and regional bone density was performed at baseline and 6 weeks postoperation. Blood and 24-hour urine samples

This study investigated associations between lifetime milk consumption, calcium intake from supplements, lifetime weight-bearing exercise, and bone mineral density (BMD) among 25 elderly women (mean age 72 y) and their premenopausal daughters (mean age 41 y). The BMD of the total, axial, and peripheral skeleton was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Lifetime milk consumption, supplemental calcium intake, and weight-bearing exercise were estimated retrospectively by questionnaire and interview. In multiple-linear-regression analyses, mothers' total and peripheral BMD were positively

PURPOSE: Fractures, a common complication of cardiac and liver transplantation, have not been reported in association with lung transplantation. However, many patients with end-stage pulmonary disease have multiple risk factors for osteoporosis, and several studies have suggested that osteoporosis before transplantation may increase the risk of fracture after transplantation. Therefore, we evaluated a group of patients with end-stage pulmonary disease who were awaiting lung transplantation to determine the prevalence of osteoporosis.
METHODS: Seventy patients (aged 18-70 years) were evaluated

Spontaneously diabetic BB rats were sham operated (SO) or ovariectomized (OVX) within days after onset and studied after 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Analyses included histomorphometry of proximal tibial metaphyses, biochemical analyses of humeri, DXA analyses, and biomechanical testing of femora. In SO diabetic rats, no osteoblasts, osteoid tissue, or osteoclasts were present on the trabecular bone surface, but trabecular bone volume (TBV) remained normal compared with control BB rats. The concentration of IGF-I per dry weight of humerus was decreased after 12 weeks of diabetes, whereas the concentrat

PURPOSE: Body mass index (BMI) cannot distinguish fat from muscle mass, masking metabolic heterogeneity. We aimed to characterize body composition phenotypes based on the intersection of BMI and low muscle mass in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF), and to compare systemic inflammatory profiles across phenotypes.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 245 hospitalized OVCF patients aged ≥ 50 years were consecutively enrolled. Appendicular muscle mass was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and low muscle mass was defined per the 2025 Asian Working Grou
